The word stunning doesn't even begin to describe my experience with Dark Tales and my necklace. Picture this, being greeted by a cascade of lovely little dried rosebuds when you open your parcel and being dazzled by the flash and glitter of tiny glowing jewels surrounding a piece of mini art that brings to mind the quote "a touch of magic in this world obsessed with science" (if you know what movie that quote is from, you are immediately my friend) which you can't wait to take out for the night in addition to no camera photograph truly capturing its strange alluring beauty. Finally to end the experience 2 beautifully presented perfume vials that hold their own stories and a corked vial of tea that promises a tannic fruit-filled escape. THAT'S what you will get with Dark Tales and I will be back for more (seriously jump on these prices while you can, you won't be disappointed!). Poison Bottle Necklace | Alchemist | Gothic | Victorian | Vampire Blood *discontinued Described as a blend of magic, dark romance and mystery and this piece is all of these things and more as it looks like it belongs on the neck of historical-fantasy's title enchantress or horror siren in a Victorian drama. The flash and glitter of the different stones allows me to match this necklace with any outfit I wish and the true strange beauty of the vial holds my attention long into the night as I can't stop staring at the intricate details and puzzling how this sealed over vial looks so much like coagulated blood (coming from a nurse to say, that is quite the feat and should be applauded as strange as that sounds) or lovely wicked poison if you are squeamish, and yet if someone were to casually glance at this piece they would only see a high-quality trinket with twinkling stones and small red glass vial; I simply love I can wear this to workplace setting and still feel elegant and entirely unique. My box also contained a few extra samples of the different kinds of curious wares this shop holds. I must also comment on the level of detail and attention that is apparent in the packaging of every product. EVERYTHING just looks like it is from some wonderful mysterious fairy tale and tied with fitting black ribbons. Perfume Oils Morning Powder (White musk, Honey Peach, Rose, Geranium and Vanilla) My skin is unfortunately sensitive to glycerin so I have been brushing a tiny bit into my hair in the morning. And this is a beautiful vintage rose that wafts around with a drop of peach and honey. I love the description on the site talking about clean morning sheets, but this oil reminds me more of a luxurious bath of tea rose petals and drop of peach juice with vanilla honey. On me, Morning Powder is definitely more rose forward and I'm impressed the peach isn't morphing and staying true. Very nice🌹 Old Library (Bergamot, Basil, Rose Tree, Cedar, Vanilla, Vetiver, Peruvian Balsam) *Inspired by "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco Out of the two vials, this fragrance is my favourite as I get this wood laced spice/herbal blend that catches my full attention throughout the day and it's easy to imagine this being the fragrance of a medieval monastery library complete with aged manuscripts and dusty rose petals between the stacks. For longevity, these perfumes tap out at about 4 hours on my skin and 13+ hours in my curls. They aren't obtrusive to those around me which I greatly appreciate as my workplace has a strict fragrance policy. Loose Tea Midnight Fairy (composition of the "Midnight Fairy" includes a mixture of classic black and green teas, candied fruit, rose petals, cornflower, and natural aromatic oils.) I'm still a novice tea drinker, but I know what I like and I LOVE this tea blend. In the corked vial I clearly smell luscious peach and that note continues to enchant my senses as I steep this brew. I enjoy my tea cold and fizzy and Midnight Fairy makes a splendid bubbly tea as I call them when it is added to a carbonator with a drop of honey. It's refreshing, sweet and delicious and I would absolutely purchase a full bag or go for the lovely tea sampler this shop offers. Overall: I was extremely impressed with everything I was presented with and I have a strong feeling this won't be my only review about Dark Tales this year. Dark Tales Obscura Hortus Obscura Hortus speaks to my autumn loving heart through and through and I had the most enlightening conversations with the shop owner who made my birthday one to remember as I received a box filled with beautiful dried flowers and lavender buds, treasures (stones and crystals that mean something to the cancer sign, the dreamer and for the moon), scent stories and history. I couldn't be more pleased with this order and can't recommend this little charming shop enough. Thank you, Corrine for everything! (You made this historymagpie and moon child beam). Jewellery Pieces Pumpkin Patch Mini Bell Jar Necklace This necklace is a perfect wearable keepsake to carry around with me to remind me of my favourite season and brings to mind a captured scene of the trees and pumpkins from The Nightmare Before Christmas or Sleepy Hollow and needless to say, I have been wearing it at every opportunity possible. It's extremely light and has a lovely dark emerald drop at the end of the chain which drapes on the back of my neck and adds a touch of extra sparkle. Despite its dainty appearance, this piece can take on an curious toddler (who is a little Autumn Person in the making) with no problem and can serve as an entertaining ornament for a full afternoon. Custom Jewellery Set This whole set is inspired by the Swan's Song legend (as well as a special connection I shared with a dearly missed loved one who collected swans) and it looks like it has been pulled from the vaults of the Romanovs'. The materials used are freshwater pearls, opalite beads and mother of pearl. I wanted a statement piece that looked like it belonged in another era with a romantic feel to it and I also wanted it to be moody, ethereal and haunting with the illusion of rain droplets or ripples and white creamy/silver with flashes from moonlight coming from the stones. A huge tall order and Corrine came through with these gorgeous creations that no camera can truly capture the flash and brilliance of. When I wear these pieces, I feel like someone special is smiling and nodding at me from above. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect birthday gift. Candles The Sweetness Milk & Flower Candle (notes: mulberry, blackberry, citrus, and cream) This candle which appeared in my first order is sublime, to say the least as it smells like summer berries in sweetened milk and has a throw that is impressive and fills my entire downstairs with one inviting fragrance. It also has caught the eye er nose of a relative who never compliments my indie candles and I had to purchase 2 jars for her after I had seen her on different occasions trying to leave with my candle in hand, haha. In addition to the incredible fragrance this jar holds, it has one nifty element added that are real flower petals and small fern fronds pressed against the sides of the glass and as the flame dances in a darkened room the light shines through the petals creating one lovely display to relax by and just stare at. My only negative is I wish the jars were larger (they are 4 oz.) but they are mighty and hold their own for quite a while of time when burning and the owner has offered to sell me a beast-sized candle (my relative also wants one), so that will be coming home to me to enjoy as soon as our current candle jars go empty. Trick or Treat Halloween Candle (no exact listed notes) This adorable little tealight candle appeared in my second order and it smells like pumpkin snickerdoodle cookies. The throw isn't as pronounced as The Sweetness but I still enjoy hovering near it and reading next to it. In this candle, there are tiny pieces of dried petals on top that sink into the wax when melted and I would love this blend in a perfume or a milk candle. I'm curious if the 4 oz. size would have a greater throw versus a tealight (I am not going to lie, I want that pumpkin jar the larger candle is sold in to display on my desk). Dark Orchid Milk Candle (notes: deep dark orchids, creamy vanilla, and sugar) A tealight version of Dark Orchid appeared in my friend's personalized gift box that I ordered and I only had a few seconds to inhale but wow this candle smelled darkly beautiful, floral and mysterious. I could detect it as soon as I accidentally opened the box and when I wrapped it back up and gave it to my friend she kept inquiring what perfume I was wearing and if she could borrow it. I had to hide a smile as she kept asking what I was wearing and if I could get her a bottle then her nose went straight to the box and inside was the tealight wrapped in a fancy gauze bag. I don't think I have ever seen anyone run so fast to light a candle in my life, haha. Fragrance Oils *These blends (made of a base of grapeseed and jojoba oils) are more for ritual purposes and relaxation so the longevity is about 2 hours or more depending on where I dab them and the throw is more like a whisper rather than a cloud that could anger or disturb others. I appreciate all that because my workplace has a ridiculously strict fragrance policy and I love to smell this shop's creations in my hair when I turn or sneak sniffs when no one is looking. As the colder months are creeping in, I can't wait to experiment with this blends on my scarves, cowls and of course dabbing a bit on my pillows. Samhain (A blend of herbs, spices, and resins reminiscent of a chilly night in a pumpkin patch) There is nothing more relaxing for myself than the scent of warm cinnamon and in Samhain the note is front and center on application however it soon drifts into a delightful medley of vanilla, nutmeg and clove creating an ultra-cosy fragrance that I love to lose myself in when I need some cheering up. For me, Samhain is traditional and my childhood memories of fall in a vial and it may be a simpler combination of notes but they are mixed expertly and it never smells overwhelming or any note is overbalanced by another which is impressive because I amp cinnamon and nutmeg. Dandelion Wine (Sweet and tart pear, freesia, plum, wormwood, sunshine and green leaves, part magic, part nostalgia, and the bitter-sweet summer.) This is classy summertime with a lovely plum and pear combination that shifts to realistic greenery and woody herbs after a few minutes then dries down to a wistful heady floral. I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do with the listed freesia and recalling past experiences with commercial blends that listed freesia but once again indies have shown me there is nothing to fear with florals and I'm happy to jot down, not one headache. This is is floral sunshine to my senses and a keeper. Sarah, Mary, and Winifred (An odd, sweet floral and spicy scent, perfect for prowling the chilly streets on Halloween night in search of mangy black felines and little snot nosed kids who call people ugly. Rose, lavender, jasmine, cinnamon, vanilla, ylang-ylang, dragon’s blood, clove, amber and musk) Sorcière Rouge, is that you? Ah no, there is realistic lavender, jasmine and cinnamon that becomes detectable a few moments after application however I am getting that warm plushy velvet impression I always received with Sorcière Rouge, interesting. I believe it's the rose and dragon's blood reminding me of the other fragrance and as always the dragon's blood is turning to bubbles from a wand with my chemistry with a hint of rose of its own. I know this is an ancient scent recipe however it still shares its sultry dreamy secrets with its wearer and brings to mind something Sarah Sanderson would wear. 'Tis another keeper! Misselthwaite Manor (Dark patchouli and amber, the beautiful gloom and earthy sweetness of old wood, neroli, lavender, and a ghosting of rose. Sweet, dreamy, with an antique charm) The Secret Garden will always have a place on my bookshelf and in my dark little heart so imagine my excitement to see Misselthwaite Manor listed and with lavender. On application, this creation brings to mind opening an antique chest with lavender and neroli sachets laid out on top of clothing dusted and coloured ivory with age. It's oddly comforting and the addition of realistic dried roses and a dry down of warm amber creates a stately fragrance I will be placing on my pillowcases for the colder months to come or into my scented bookmarkers for when I'm enjoying another escape into a beloved topic of history or revisiting a beloved setting I yearn to see someday. Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin (Spiced apple, pumpkin pie, vanilla, and hay open the scent. Smoky patchouli and anise create a dark and alluring middle, sandalwood and a hint of dead leaves reminiscent of the ghosts of Halloween’s past round it out!) I'm rather picky about apple fragrances and Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin is impressive, smelling like realistic apple skin and flesh dusted with spices (no sharp soap or fake candy here). I also get the hay with vanilla and anise with creamy sandalwood in the background keeping the spices nicely tempered. I'm not sure if my nose is playing seasonal tricks but I detect a kiss of black pepper that is unlisted. Overall, it's very well blended but the only thing is I wish it lasted longer on my skin, ah well into my curls, unscented whipped soap and onto my spooky warm scarves Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin all goes. The Autumn People (The strong scent of disturbed earth, moss, and spice as though Mr Dark and his horrible carnival clawed their way out through the forest floor. Ancient frankincense and amber create a strange fog that billows from the midnight steam engine. It mixes with hints of sweet apples, pumpkins, and black tea that hover in the atmosphere around the sleepy autumn town. The presence of dark patchouli and vanilla lingers in the shadows with the dust witch. This scent is weird, wonderful, and unisex. Perfect for the Dust Witches and Mr. Darks of The October Country!) A sweet spice opens this fragrance then distinct notes of tea, sliced apples and resins appears on the mid dry down and finally an earthy patchouli stays along with warmed vanilla amber as well as a ghosting of spice for a good 2 to 3 hours. As its name implies, it is an excellent companion for the howling winds and Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin. For preference between the two, I find myself reaching for Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin but nod in approval to both well-blended creations overall. Baba Yaga's Broom (Woody, resinous, sweet, and earthy, like the ancient birch forest she resides in. The scents and herbs correspond with Baba Yaga herself: birch, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, frankincense, vanilla, and bergamot.) I just adore all of these themes of poetry, memories of old houses and Slavic folklore and Baba Yaga smells like the fragrance that greets me every morning after work when I open my bedroom door: cinnamon broom, resins, a little something elegant and ancient wood. Welcome home this blend says, you're safe in your realm now. This is the scent of my lair. The Lady in White (A floral, sweet, deeply haunting and otherworldly blend of spicy carnation, freesia, peach, black cardamom, and dreamy tonka bean. Like a whisper from another world, a spirit in a long white gown passing through walls, her sweetness lingering long after she vanishes.) This was the first vial I pulled out of the carefully curated box and no surprise I adore this! It's spicy, woody and floral on the opening with no dreaded soap rearing anytime and the florals are so fresh and inviting. It was a proper introduction to what this shop could create and how they brilliantly and expertly handled florals that usually sent me a rip-roaring headache (freesia and carnation) but this lady proved there was nothing to fear and I knew I found something special. In regards to the throw and longevity The Lady in White is one of the longest-lasting oils in the catalogue and is also a morpher and a trickster as it is barely noticeable when applied staying close to the skin but a few hours later I receive this powdery elegant (even a little unexpectedly sweet) enveloping farewell to end the night. A true keeper! Crow's Wings (Comforting and delicate, like the dark and iridescent purple and blues seen in crow feathers, warm, sweet, and magical: blackberry, vanilla, patchouli, violet, cinnamon, chocolate, and musk.) The applicator wand holds incredible notes of chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and backing of fruit but alas my skin chemistry just eats Crow's Wings at first and then only amplifies the violet and turns the chocolate waxy. I can't comment on the musk as I can never identify that element in any perfume from across the realm and the blackberry is overshadowed by the violet on me. I still like this oil and have plans for this blend as a curl oil (my hair amps spice and patchouli and I'm honestly impressed even with the violets they are more soft and powdery versus turning to cough syrup) but as a skin blend this, unfortunately, wasn't a favourite. Ode to a Snowy Evening (A magical blend of earthy trees like juniper and balsam fir, swirl among the scent of mints, spices, mulled fruits, hot cocoa, and the evening winter wind. Wear it while cozied up with a great book of poetry, while trudging snowy forest paths in search of the most perfect tree, while making snow angels, or sleigh riding!) I'm in love with all of these poetic descriptions and names of perfumes in this charming shop's scent library and I wish every one of these blends would play nice with my finicky chemistry but my skin has found notes to tease and torment with me and this time it's the chocolate, pine and juniper which are turning waxy and muted on me. Why?! There is a unique green mystery note that is still present along with comforting mint keeping me sniffing my arms but it's unfortunately fleeting. Does anyone wish to trade skin chemistries? I'm pretty fed up with mine. Rue St. Ann (Dedicated to the ghosts of St Ann Street and the legend of voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Gardenia, soft florals, hints of citrus and spices, ginger, sandalwood, benzoin, frankincense, and myrrh.) Oh, there we go! This is one sultry mysterious gardenia blend and instant love. I wore Rue St. Ann quite a bit this past summer as it strangely works in brutal heat and humidity with the subtle citrus, ginger and frankincense that smells revitalizing but still somehow dark with the buttery seductive gardenia. Why didn't I start collecting gardenias sooner? Another crowning jewel right here for my floral oil collection. The Witching Time of Night (An earthy blend of frankincense, patchouli, and black pepper is the fertile ground where blueberries and lavender sprigs grow. Hints of amber and heady ylang-ylang, spice, and ancient resins create a mysterious and transformative blend. This perfume is a shape-shifter, beautifully odd, and unique.) 2019 was without a doubt the year of blueberry, gardenia and lavender for me as I finally realized I am a fiend for all of these types of notes and must hoard them all like some fierce earth covered beast as I do the same with pumpkins. I can't get enough and The Witching Time of Night is another fine example and vial that will disappear quickly especially with the realistic blueberry amping along with black pepper and lavender. I'm honestly not sure what ylang ylang smells like so I can't identify it but I can say the background of frankincense and amber finishes off this beauty perfectly creating a hooded figure on the moors collecting fruit and herbs under a clouded moon. Grimoire (Inspired by ancient books of magic and invocation. The scent of black tea, tobacco, and aged leather. Earthy patchouli, sweet heliotrope, smoky clove, lavender, ancient spice, and incense smoke.) The longer this blend ages the more I'm falling for it. Right away I'm getting more early spring to summer book reading with Grimoire which suites me just fine as I already have Book of Shadows for the wicked winds and racing clouds at night during November. The heliotrope adds a delicate sweetness to the black tea and worn leather and the dried lavender takes this perfume to another level of lovely and magical. Finally happy to report with Grimoire, the black tea does not turn soapy on me and smells straight from a bag with a fancy label. Setting The Watch (Inspired by ancient midsummer fire celebrations. Sandalwood, cedar, lime, Bergamot, plum, spice, and hibiscus) In the vial and on application, Setting The Watch is a revisit to my childhood as I'm reunited with the unmistakable scent of sweet lime popsicles from a certain brand that that was in a clear tube with white lettering. Mmm, this is a part of summertime I had long forgotten as the lime is so energizing and I'm 5 years old again swinging on my Baba and Pap's porch while the windchimes clank and jingle and rainbow bubbles dance in the breeze. It's such a happy scent and the more this oil dries it moves in the garden or woods with the bergamot, plum and sandalwood as the lime fades away (time machine now, please!). Setting The Watch is going right next to Bombus pensylvanicus (American Bumblebee) for unexpectedly capturing summer childhood memories perfectly. Sleep and Poetry (Wind blows the scent of lilacs from an open window into a warm house filled with the sweetness of shortbread cookies, honey, chamomile tea and cinnamon.) Of course, the lilacs fade immediately on me but when first applied they are lovely and realistic with no soapy pinching headaches to report. I get the crumbs from a shortbread cookie, realistic cinnamon bark and even a drop of honeyed tea. It's a sweet and calming blend bringing to mind a folksy kindly figure pottering about in her kitchen. I just wish Sleep and Poetry lasted longer on my skin, here's another oil for my hair. Oh, that's better and the warm honey amps in my curls. Another keeper! The Owls Are Not What They Seem (Weird, extremely woodsy, deep, and unisex. Notes of Benzoin, Patchouli, Douglas Fir, Juniper, and vanilla) This blend is taking me on an evening walk into the hollow looking for deer scrapes in November with my father. The patchouli and vanilla are the most dominant notes on me with the fir and juniper fading quickly into the background. It's like sitting in the packed dirt among the old pine nettles listening to the sounds of the early night. Very comforting and another I wished stayed longer on my skin. Queen Mab (Essential oils of lavender, cedar, peppermint, jasmine, and vanilla intended to calm the mind, aid in deep sleep, and create vivid dreams.) I've had intense vivid dreams for as long as I can remember so I can't comment on how well this oil works for dreamwork but I can gush about the delightful peppermint, lavender and vanilla that opens this blend that helps me relax after a long week. For those curious, the jasmine drifts in the background adding a floral sweetness and peeks out on occasion along with the cedar. Queen Mab is another unique lavender collage to hoard away. To The Lighthouse (Unisex, fresh, and reminiscent of salty air, driftwood and seaweed washed upon the shore. Sea salt, petitgrain, lavender, lime, and sage.) I have never stepped foot on a beach or seen an ocean in this lifetime so I can't say how realistic this is to a setting, however, I can't help but love the salt, sandy dirt note that is amping on my skin. For aquatic medleys, To The Lighthouse is quite interesting that is doesn't resemble soap on me and has the quality as I can only describe as "natural". It tells a dreamy scent story I wish to learn more about and I truly hope this is what a stormy beach smells like. Walpurgisnacht (Tobacco, honey, aromatic woods and spices, and a touch of rosemary. Sweet spring, fresh air, and a dash of hell fire!) Tobacco and honey seekers look no further than Walpurgisnacht as this spring golden honey and a scattering of fresh tobacco from a pipe. The rosemary is hidden on me and I amp the honey and something bringing to mind a floral; perhaps even unlisted sandalwood is waiting on the dry down as well. Mmm, it smells like honey tea sticks on me and a pouch of pipe tobacco which is all extremely comforting and reminding me of March winds and April showers. The First Hint of Spring (An attempt to bottle a spring morning. Dewey grass, muddy earth, sweet floral wisps of lavender and violet, and damp wood) Well, this attempt described above is truly ace and I can't stop huffing my wrist. This is the scent of fresh sun-warmed grass with sweet lavender and powdery violet on the breeze. Wow, this is gorgeous and the best atmospheric of spring grass I have come across in the indie realm. I just want to roll around in this fragrance and stare up at the scuttling fluffy clouds. The First Hint of Spring is a must to try if you having been searching for a little vial or bottle to hide away and remind yourself in the dead of winter of the magic to soon arrive. Brava, Corrine! Once Upon A Midnight Dreary (Patchouli and anise conjure the image of a dark chamber, and a stately raven repeating “nevermore”, bergamot for wisdom, a ghosting of lavender and violets for the nagging memory of Lenore, and clove for the dying embers who wrought their ghosts upon the floor.) I could bathe in star anise and Once Upon A Midnight Dreary is a fine example of that mysterious spice that just sweeps me away along with lavender and clove. I usually amp patchouli and violets to the heavens but this and a few others from the scent library of this curious shop have me excited to see violets listed in the description; that in itself is well worth mentioning and applauding. I know which special scarf this gem is going on. Stay Off The Moors (Inspired by full moon nights when werewolves lurk in fog, out for blood! A deep, arguably more masculine blend of peony, cypress, patchouli, black sandalwood, musk, and oud wood.) The above notes create a delight for my fiendish little imagination as it conjures a brooding Gothic anti-hero who let's be frank is a cool drink of water with a sweeping top hat, whew this one is seductive smelling. It's like this extremely debonair mysterious Victorian Gentleman has entered your life but has a dark side when he leads you into the moonlight that you should fear but can't stay away from. I already asked if the scent artist could create a hot vampire gent scent next. Ahem, I'll be tucking Stay Off The Moors away for future use, haha. Dear all available men, WEAR STAY OFF THE MOORS! Lady Anne's Ghost Garden (A smoky rose, gardenia and coffee brew, punctuated by wisps of sandalwood and vetiver ghosts, cardamon, tonka bean, and a hint of clove.) This perfume is inspired by a fascinating 17th-century woman, however, on me, this blend brings to mind a haunting 1920's Jazz Singer all in shimmer under the smokey spotlight. The coffee melds beautifully with the cardamon, sandalwood and florals, sweeping me away to another era and I feel I could croon and sway wearing Lady Anne's Ghost Garden. I must also note here's another impressive mixture of notes that usually go oh so wrong on me but somehow magically create something unique and to recommend. The Ride-by-Nights (The faintest hint of cinnamon swirls in a breeze of oakmoss, sandalwood, neroli, sage, and hay. Patchouli and hints of lofty tree tops, night air, damp earth, and myrrh. This isn’t a typical spicy autumnal scent. It’s fresh and crisp, reminding one of the magic that lingers in the air in autumn, especially on Halloween night!) Cinnamon is another note I can't get enough of and it swirls wonderfully with the neroli, hay, myrrh and patchouli ending as a sweet fruit fragrance with a spooky playful undercurrent. It smells like airy candy matching the poem of the same name and is another oil I will be using for my curls. Top Picks (in no particular order): The Lady in White, Rue St. Ann, Stay Off The Moors, Misselthwaite Manor, Baba Yaga's Broom, Setting The Watch, To The Lighthouse, The First Hint of Spring and Samhain Shiny Stones And Special Meaning Crystals And finally, I present my collection of 20 special stones and crystals selected by the owner that means something to the cancer sign, the dreamer and for the moon of course. *Each stone was individually wrapped and labelled with either a specific meaning attached or accompanied by a fascinating myth surrounding the stone or crystal. These shiny items arrived with an adorable bottle of incense and a palo santo wood piece with lavender that not only smells incredible but is for "cleansing you space". I'm not honestly sure how to review crystals so I'll just post my thoughts on the certain stones which I guess have "selected" me and have become something very special for me. Satin Spar (Selenite)- I asked for a stone that would remind me of the moon and Selenite is it with its white glowing brilliance that looks like I'm holding a beam of moonlight. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Satin Spar (Selenite) was named after the Greek Goddess of the moon Selene. It seriously looks like you're holding a bit of the moon in your hand! Rose Quartz- This stone is probably my favourite as I find the most mysterious comforting energy from it and I know this sounds bizarre but when I'm holding it, it's like I'm holding the hand again of a loved one I miss every day. It even warms up and the added weight in my palm creates this amazing experience. I don't know if a stone can "remind you of someone's essence or spirit" but Rose Quartz is my Baba. There is also a wonderful myth attached to Rose Quartz that involves Aphrodite (you can read it on Obscura Hortus's site as well as many other fascinating legends connected to each stone and crystal available for purchase). Labradorite- If Selenite is the clear beam of glowing moonlight then Labradorite brings to mind the moon behind night clouds. It has this aura about it that shines and flashes and I would love a cabochon necklace of this dark protective stone set in a satellite style with perhaps carnelian drops or moonstone. Lapis Lazuli- This was a complete surprise addition that has been a lovely stone to hold while I'm either browsing the wide web or typing out my thoughts as I am now. It's a nifty inspiration stone which I would love to start collecting jewellery pieces (and a pen) of soon. Optical Calcite- When I first browsed this curious shop's full listing this was the initial stone that caught my eye and I loved the trivia that was posted about it. By passing light through calcite, even on cloudy days, it's possible to detect polarization rings to locate the sun". "Excellent cancer zodiac stone, aids in self-expression and keeping emotions in check". Dominican Amber- Yes, I did dance and seal clap in pure glee when I saw a piece of genuine amber was added to my order. Jurassic Park is one of my top five favourite films and I already collect amber jewellery. Don't look at me like that! When you are holding amber polished or not, you are holding the world's history in your hand. It's millions of years old and it's feather-light which is also so flipping neat about it. Larvikite (Norwegian Moonstone)- This was another stone that immediately caught my attention when I saw the photograph of this unique speckled stone. The legend of it being another fallen piece of the moon had me revisiting the page for weeks before I finally decided to contact the owner for this huge custom order. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Hightens the senses, elemental magic- clarity & meditation". Herkimer Diamonds- I received one and the other was found in my friend's curated box (she is a Gemini and stones attached to her sign and for different reasons I asked for were selected: Green Opal, Tiger's Eye, Rose Quartz, Emerald). Wait until you hear why this stone is so different from others. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Herkimer Diamonds create a cosmic link between friends and loved ones. You and --- both have one, so you'll always be in tune no matter the distance". "Spiritual wholeness, high vibrational healing stone". Overall this whole custom birthday order was more than I could have asked for to find. This was the first time in years that I smiled on my birthday and I can't recommend this little shop enough whether you are looking for a unique scent, stone or some trinket with various purpose and meaning. Obscura Hortus Willow WaxCraft While other candle melt shops may pour a single note of cotton candy into their products, stick a spooky sounding name on a fancy label and then ship it out weeks later. Willow WaxCraft dares to go outside of the box and offer blended notes of barn wood, murky water, death lilies, champagne, aged tobacco etc. which all pay creative homage to different themes that are then shipped out insanely fast, presented beautifully AND smell as promised! Imagine that! That's all why I return to this wonderful shop and this time the Falloween collection needed to come home to me. As always the packaging was beyond lovely (the exotic candy and free sample greatly appreciated) and my favourites out of the bunch were Unmask!, Ulalume's Tomb *see review here, and 7 Days Thank you Samantha for thinking and going outside the box. Unmask! (Described as: "A polished roque mallet, aged wood and vanilla, hearth embers, pine, evergreen topiary animals, rich merlot, and sparkling champagne. Great party, isn’t it?!") *Now available in the General Catalogue Willow WaxCraft promised a scene from an iconic horror novel and they delivered with Unmask! Walking into my bedroom is like entering a historic New Year's Eve party set in the mountains and I can detect every note. The fresh cut boughs of an evergreen greet me first followed by a wisp of smoke and bubbly champagne. The more I stand in the doorway I expect to hear music from Glenn Miller fill the air or to find a pile of confetti at my feet, the sweet wine and wood notes slowly appear next pulling me into another world and the vanilla and embers are a nice departing combination. Unmask! definitely creates an atmosphere I don't want to leave and I'm so happy it has joined the general catalogue. It's my personal favourite from this enchanting shop. 7 Days (Described as: "A dusty barn, decaying wood and hay, an ancient stone well, dark water, burning leaves, and videotape. She never sleeps.") *Limited Seasonal Edition This shop truely excels at going completely outside the box with their listed notes and 7 Days is one melt you just have to experience to get the full effect. For me, each time I open my bedroom door I'm taken back to my grandmother's ancient barn and staring into inky darkness. That dusty barn description is dead on as well as the stone well and hay. I don't get any smoke, leaves or that distinct odd scent of used video tapes I somehow remember but if you want a creepy abandoned barn with stone walls and a prickling sense of something dark in the water, get 7 Days and be prepared for a scent journey. Victorian Smoking Room (Described as: "Where the menfolk retreat into a cloud of smoke and congratulate themselves on being masters of the universe…dark wood panels, tall shelves of worldly literature, opulent leather armchairs, and velvet, velvet everywhere. Black pepper, patchouli, vetiver, sweet tobacco and pipe smoke with hints of cherry and vanilla, rich bourbon, and deep brown sugar.") *Available in the General Catalogue How could I resist a clever hidden little reference to one of my favorite movies in the description but alas Victorian Smoking Room gives me a bad headache and I can't be in a room more than a few minutes at a time when it is melting. I was hoping for more tobacco and either the bourbon or the heavy leather accord just doesn't make my heart go on (sorry, sorry couldn't resist), a rare miss with this fabulous shop. Oh well, can't win them all. Pumpkin Latte (Described as: "It’s officially the season of that omnipresent autumnal coffee drink- sweet pumpkin, rich coffee, fall spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and clove), all topped with mounds of whipped cream and drizzled with caramel. Cozy up.") *a free sample that appeared in my order, thank you so much Willow WaxCraft! *Limited Seasonal Edition Even though I can't drink heavily caffeinated beverages I still enjoy smelling them and Pumpkin Latte is true to life with a spicy creamy combination that fills an entire room and upstairs with one delicious pumpkin aroma. The coffee note is dark as promised but lightened with the whipped cream and spices that call for just one more sniff before leaving for the night. It almost reminds me of Liber Arcana without the leather note. A true fall staple that I need to get a full clamshell of eventually. As soon, as I saw the winter collection I had to try several and the sampler was the perfect option for that desire. My package arrived lightning fast and was presented in such a pretty fashion (I love the new willow vine ribbon choice). Upon opening the carefully packed parcel, I could immediately smell something divine waiting and I couldn't decide if that was exactly Whoopie, a Zeppelin! or The Christmas Tree Emporium of the Midwest (turns out it was a heavenly mashup of both). Each scent shot was nicely sized and the stand out favourites were The Long Night, The Christmas Tree Emporium of the Midwest and Breathe Before You Leave. The Long Night (Described as: "A warm light in the darkness of Winter Solstice: Balsam fir, sacred frankincense and myrrh, beeswax candles, sweet oud, blood orange, clove, cinnamon leaf, and vanilla") *Available in the General Catalogue As the snow swirled and blew this past winter, I found The Long Night was exactly what I needed to melt the frosty winter blues that always arrives with the howling winds and pelting ice. Right away, the realistic pine pulls me away from the outside world and when the familiar frankincense, myrrh with spicy bright orange appears it all transforms my bedroom into a much needed sanctuary and just makes my senses glow with memories of once happy holidays and cherished visions. I can't help but smile as this candle melt holds a very special fragrance combination for me. I'm so thankful it can be found in the general catalogue listing now; it's so lovely and a comforting treasure (I wish there was a perfume oil that could match these notes; it's perfect in my book). Whoopie, a Zeppelin! (Described as: "Plunge into the cornucopia! The scent of sugarplums, tart pomegranate, cinnamon glazed doughnuts, gingerbread, a swig of a buttered hot toddy, and unbridled avarice".) *Limited Seasonal Edition This was one of the first fragrances to catch my attention as the fruit notes are dominant with a tangy sweetness that fills a whole upstairs and lingers in the air after the wax warmer is turned off for the night. It is indeed the smell of holiday delights with a swig of something extra to warm you up and if you love lightly spiced plum or pomegranate join me in keeping an eye out for this creation's hopeful return next winter. The Christmas Tree Emporium of the Midwest (Described as: "Take a trip to the lot and find that one glorious tree (not one where all the needles fall off). A variety of evergreens, mistletoe, hot cocoa, roasted chestnuts, and a whisper of gasoline and motor oil.) *Limited Seasonal Edition I realize not every winter creation from this release could make it to the general catalogue but I really wish The Christmas Tree Emporium of the Midwest could have made the cut because my bedroom is delicious realistic smelling cocoa, evergreens and yes even carries a spot of motor oil that hangs in the air. It's simply marvellous! Overall, a brilliant mixture that captures an iconic scene from my favorite Christmas movie and reminds me of driving around looking at twinkling lights and themed displays so long ago. A definite repurchase for me and one to recommend. Lost on the Moor (Described as: "The haunting, chilling scent of the wild Yorkshire moor-heather, lavender, moss, chamomile, ozone, juniper and elderflower.") *Available in the General Catalogue Please allow me to interrupt this humble review with my favourite quote from this classic (or pretty much from any work I ever picked up): "Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living; you said I killed you—haunt me, then! The murdered do haunt their murderers, I believe. I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad!" [Sigh] Now that's a book and even though Lost on the Moor is described as haunting and chilling for me this was the fragrance I melted when I was desperately seeking spring this past winter. Saying that, I will admit this melt was more fresh and bright (even a touch soapy) than I was desiring but the more time I spent in its company, the more I oddly liked it and was drawn to it. In the end, Lost on the Moor definitely brings to mind warm spring sunshine on a green landscape where one can clear their mind and be half-savage and hardy, and free again. I do believe I need a clamshell pack of this. Breathe Before You Leave (Described as: "I was given this mantra to repeat to myself during a particularly stressful time in my life. So often we rush out in the morning without taking a moment to compose ourselves, and it sets a frazzled tone for the entire day. He told me, “slow down, and breathe before you leave.” Juicy pear combined with bright and zesty yuzu, lemon verbena, ginseng, and cleansing sage, grounded with hibiscus tea. Breathe deep.") *a free sample nestled among my scent shots and exotic candy, thank you Willow WaxCraft, you know how to spoil us! *Available in the General Catalogue This sparkly square appeared in my order and it is one uplifting tart citrus blend that wakes my senses and pulls my nose toward my upstairs (it has an impressive throw when I open the door). I can clearly smell the lemon verbena, ginseng and bright fruits (it is almost an effervescent scent but with a hint of spice) even where I sit typing and just like Lost on the Moor it reminds me of warm spring sunshine. Perfect for this time of the year when nature can't decide if it's 60 degrees or 14 degrees with dangerous ice and everything is brown or gray. I need to order a full clamshell as I want Breathe Before You Leave (so aptly named) throughout my home (or in my car) the entire year round. Willow WaxCraft I just wanted to take a moment and thank UniversalZone for creating this lovely one of kind shawl for my dear great-aunt who taught me to appreciate literature in all forms and to always have a book in my hand or in my purse. I couldn't have asked for a better present for her and she was over the moon with it. Highly recommend UniversalZone in every way possible way. They understand and cater brilliantly to lovers of the classics! After making an initial enquiry if a custom of Anna Karenina was possible I was answered with a friendly and professional response from the owner within the hour and several detailed questions and triple checks later to see if I was completely satisfied before purchasing (they even researched alternative artwork from the first edition of this novel, sent me photographs of the finished scarf AND did it all in the shade of green my aunt wears the most) this amazing shop fashioned and shipped out (in one day) one fantastic Christmas gift that I don't think I'll be able to top this year or in the years to come. For the past several months I have been carefully hoarding away an assortment of unique home fragrances to properly lift or match any mood I may have during the year and what an exciting venture it has turned out to be. I stumbled upon quite a few indie shops that had creative takes on atmospherics, unbelievable true to life gourmands and ones that charmed me overall with their aesthetics and presentation. These were the first finds along my journey into the candle melt realm and the beginning of a whole new kind of collection for my home and imagination. Strange Fire & Fumery Existential Dread- (description on site: "You wouldn't believe me if I told you.") *Available in the General Catalogue I'll admit it, I purchased Existential Dread solely based on the cryptic description and I couldn't be more pleased with the unique aroma that greets me that smells of dead flowers with wilted stems and something warm or slightly resembling new spring grass (perhaps heliotrope?). It's oddly comforting and perfectly natural smelling (this is a must if anyone has been looking for an "everything returns to/from the earth" type of fragrance). The throw is wonderful and Existential Dread makes me want to curl up with a good dark mystery novel every time I'm in its presence. This wasn't the first complex fragrant item I have had the pleasure to have in my home from this scentcrafter as I fell hard for the Opium incense and Ether candle I received in my Ave Victoria Box and I've been consistently amazed by this scent artist's way with florals. I can't wait to for the Victorian Brothel-Valentine's Day box I ordered to arrive at my doorstep in the coming weeks (bring me all the rosemary, orange blossom, french vanilla, rosewood and dreamy lavender creations). As for Existential Dread, I would repurchase this melt and also try it in the perfume form. Rook- (Wet leaves, musky black feathers, slow vetiver, a stiff branch, the slow death-creep of Autumn, a fussy Underworld messenger.) *Available in the General Catalogue With a description like that, I had visions of a square of wax containing the darkly captivating aromas that I have found in Welcome to Burkittsville and I Be The Witch of the Wood from Sixteen92 but alas this black-purple melt is more fresh in nature and I can only describe Rook as "witchy laundry" as I get nice smelling clothes tumbling in a dryer but the vetiver does pull the mystery and gloom into the scene which I love but it's not enough. Overall pleasant, an interesting atmospheric you will never find for sale in a commercial setting and completely unexpected but not for me sadly. I think Rook would be a fantastic first candle melt option for someone who loves clean and refreshing scents. Oh well, my search begins again for a realistic creepy forest blend in square form. Willow WaxCraft Liber Arcana- (Leather, Pumpkin, Herbs, Cauldron Smoke) *Available in the General Catalogue My love of bargains and the thought of my home smelling like pumpkin, herbs and cauldron smoke landed this order in my basket and into my warmer less than a week as this shop has lightning-fast shipping. The packaging is just darling to behold as I secretly adore anything to do with swans so this storefront had me from the stamping of the emblem on the envelope then continued to spoil me with the exotic candy tucked in my order and finally took me away to a fancy European styled coffee shop in fall with Liber Arcana. The leather is the most dominant note but the other anticipated accords are there adding to the overall effect but I do wish the pumpkin and smoke were more forward. Not sure I will repurchase this particular melt but that's okay as this shop has a vast catalogue to explore (and I did just that, reviews coming soon). Sleepy Hollow Day- (Petrichor, moss and vines, distant woodsmoke, wet wood, and a damp persistent drizzle) *Available in the General Catalogue -was a free mini tart sample (Thank you Willow WaxCraft!) Hm I'm beginning to think that finding a true to life smelling rainstorm in a candle melt may become a white whale for me as Sleepy Hollow Day is registering as soap just like Rook. Perhaps the general public doesn't want their homes to smell like mud, decaying leaves and damp roots from an ancient fog draped Hollow but this lady sure does and I don't give up easily so I'm fully prepared to track down that elusive distinct aroma that resurrects a beloved scent memory for me in any candle/stick of incense/or melt out there. Sleepy Hollow Day and Rook are more pleasant conceptual or artistic renderings (pretty paintings of a scene) which may be exactly what someone else may desire for their own idea of relaxation. Oh well, onward we go. Yule Log- (Woodsmoke and marshmallow, hot buttered rum, sweet maple toddy, and creamy spiced eggnog) *LIMITED EDITION/DISCONTINUED Oh yum! I'm so grateful the owner sent this in my mystery pack. It's divine in every way and makes my bedroom smell like a coffeehouse/bakery at Christmas time. The smoke and sweet marshmallow are undernotes to the buttered rum and spices and this was my second favorite melt in the bag. Sadly, I believe this blend has been discontinued as I looked for it over the holidays and it did not return in any listing- so here's one cup of aromatic wax I'll be saving to use. Harvest Hayride- (Leaves, crisp apple cider, pumpkin, and salty-sweet kettle corn) *LIMITED EDITION This cornflower blue cut of wax is an autumn mosaic of delicious apple cider (with just the right amount of spice), something resembling hay and buttery seasonal treats that surround me in a perfect fall atmosphere I sorely missed last year. Harvest Hayride is so relaxing and I was crushed to learn this was another limited edition scent mashup I now need to carefully hoard away. I honestly wish I tried this shop earlier and grabbed larger sized options of 3 out of the 4 cups (or shots as they are referred to at Willow WaxCraft) I received in my first order. Anarchy’s Child- (Nougat-y trick or treat candy, smashed pumpkins, and fall leaves) *LIMITED SEASONAL EDITION This blend just wasn't for me but it definitely creates a story with the scents of overly sweet candy and a gust of crunchy fall leaves. It's sweet mischief and misrule on All Hallows' Eve. I'm not sure why I get hints of leather when this blend turns to a burgundy sparkly liquid but it can give me a headache. Anarchy's Child and Ulalume’s Tomb (and I think Harvest Hayride) are the only 2 (or 3) resurrected fragrances and can be seen in the Halloween collection. Ulalume’s Tomb- (Vanilla, black tea, white pepper, cold stone, dust, and lily) *LIMITED SEASONAL EDITION This aromatic item was my choice pick out of the mystery pack and I immediately ordered another after falling under this blend's spell for the first time. If anyone out there is a Poe devotee Willow WaxCraft presented one amazing ode to such a beautiful tragic poem (complete with a silver shaped star on top of the pale white wax) with Ulalume's Tomb. It carries a lovely melancholic element and served as the ideal blend to read certain gothic novels by (most notably mirroring the crypt scenes between Lucy Westenra and Arthur Holmwood in Dracula and the sense of haunting loss and abandonment in The Lost History of Dreams perfectly). In sense of notes, the pepper lends to the idea of grit you could imagine coming from the floors of a forgotten tomb and yes there is dustiness on wilted sweetly decaying lilies (I am an official hunter of lily perfumes and candles now). There is also a striking vanilla accord that swirls around creating the impression of cold moonlight. Quite impressive overall and I need to order a larger size clamshell next fall. Bonjour Wax Co. Autumn In Paris- (Spiced Pumpkin Souffle & warmed toasted Baguettes) *LIMITED SEASONAL RELEASE This blend is just incredible and gladdens my spirit while making me so hungry whenever I melt it. It's extremely realistic smelling (BEST baked bread note I have found yet in perfume or candle form) and the cut up tart pieces throws a delectable aroma from my bedroom to the downstairs. The scent doesn't last as long as the other melts I have tested though which is disheartening but while it lasts, Autumn in Paris is easily one of my top 3 favorites from all the candle shops I've visited. I just wish it lasted longer (still plan to get a wax "loaf" of Autumn in Paris next fall and in the meantime sneaking sniffs of the uncapped sparkly contents). Familiar Spirit- (Pear, Pink Pepper, Orange Blossom, Coffee, Sweet Licorice, Resinous Cedarwood and Cashmere Wood) *LIMITED EDITION Holy cats this one packs a punch! There is nothing subtle or tame about Familiar Spirit and I want to love it but honestly, it's not for me. In the cup, it's a stunning collage of woods, sweet floral and pepper (I would love to find that combination in a perfume oil) but when it's unleashed in the melter the cashmere and cedar woods wreck havoc on my head and it smells extremely masculine in nature. This is incredible scent artistry displayed that creates a story and matches the name but sorry no, I don't care for the melted fragrance at all and sadly Familiar Spirit will be leaving my house never to return. I guess I need to watch out for those notes in any future order especially the base ones. Foolish Mortals- (Hazelnut Coffee, Marshmallow Fireside and French Baguettes) *LIMITED EDITION Bonjour Wax Co. excels at bread and marshmallow notes and Foolish Mortals is another choice pick I would repurchase. The marshmallow is the strongest scent I notice and the coffee along with the realistic bread note are more of underlying accords to the whole scent confection. It's sweet, decadent and makes me smile plus makes me hungry for a heavy breakfast. The throw and scent last a bit longer than Autumn in Paris and Fluffernutter. Now I need a hazelnut coffee perfume with marshmallow and bread Mmmm! Fluffernutter- (Creamy Peanut Butter & Marshmallow Fluff on Toasted Bread) *LIMITED SEASONAL EDITION As I get older I want to surround myself in special kinds of comforts and nostalgia and that is especially true for scents in my home. Fluffernutter matches all the above desires and I have found a real gem stumbling upon this wax company and melt. Who knew it was possible to scent my sanctuary away from the mad world in the unmistakable aroma of toasted peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches! Another future repurchase item and one I love to sneak sniffs of. Not one headache to report thankfully with this lovely soothing creation and it will always be a part of my home decor and I'm throwing out any Yankee Candles. POWDERED WIG FRAGRANCE: Orris & Orange Blossom Time from initial lighting to noticeable throw in a large room with fans: Around 8 minutes What can I say? I can never turn away from lovely illustrations and the decorative label featuring the brooding gentleman with his admiring lady on the jar of POWDERED WIG immediately caught my eye and made me think of an earlier version of Heathcliff and Isabella Linton from Wuthering Heights. It certainly looked like it had a story to tell and the fascinating trivia notes about the use of orange blossom and orris in actual wigs intrigued me all the more (plus I have been searching for a powdery candle with a meaning for a long time). Let me tell you the jar is even more stunning in person and the scent profile of POWDERED WIG is indeed soft and demure with such a beautiful welcoming quality from the delicate orange blossom and powdery orris. Not an overwhelming fragrance by any means but just a terrific starter candle for those curious about this fine collection of scents and historical inspirations. MX Perfume mxperfume.etsy.com Some things can't be merely explained or properly described they only need to be experienced and if you give MX Perfume a curious wave of the wrist you will quickly understand what I mean. I will say these marvellous perfumes hold such a captivating mysterious collective quality about them and for whatever theme, clever name, fragrance profile or iconic image that grabs your attention; you are in for a rare treat. BLASPHEMY (Listed Notes: Orange, Apricot, Osmanthus, Davana, Clove, Black Pepper, Ginger, Myrrh, Vanilla, Labdanum) In the vial: CLOVE, BLACK PEPPER, MYRRH and an undercurrent of dark FRUIT that melds so well into the spice and resins, it's positively wicked and divine! Applied: If you are a "spice fiend" who can't help slathering on fragrances with some heat and giving your nose a much-needed wakeup, grab BLASPHEMY and take your place inside the fire with MX Perfume (you won't regret it). On me, this oil opens with a mash of zesty spice and warm fruit that I can't pull my nose away from and as this scent potion dries it actually gets more pronounced akin to a growing flame with an underlining black pepper and something herbaceous stoking and giving it an extra kick on my skin. When it fades hours later, the final call goes to a faint peppery vanilla giving this wonderfully complex perfume a lasting soothing quality you can't wait to smell again. I love wearing this creation in the workplace setting or just standing on the breezeway letting the well-blended list of notes swirl with the wind and this fragrance is going right into my basket of "you need this". FULL MOON (Listed Notes: Thyme, Orris Tincture, White Lotus, Night Jasmine, Violet, Styrax, Ambergris (*animal-friendly/synthetic), Copaiba Balsam) In the vial: THYME, VIOLET and AMBERGRIS, it has a lovely obscure property to it that I'm excited to try. Hopefully, my skin chemistry behaves with the violet. Here we go... Applied: The more I wear FULL MOON and allow it to age, the more I'm falling under its spell. This and PAPER MOON (review to follow shortly) are both, unlike anything I have ever had the pleasure to smell before with the thyme amping on my skin and creating a pure elemental quality that adds another facet to seek out for my growing perfume collection. If PAPER MOON is the summer to early autumn version of the presentation of the moon in my mind, then FULL MOON is the intricate mysterious fall to winter arrangement with a herbaceous opening then unique florals, powder and a barely detectable sprig of balsam under everything. I will definitely be wearing FULL MOON for the Total Lunar Eclipse (the longest of the 21st century) happening at the end of this month (Friday, July 27th). SUGAR HICCUP (Listed Notes: Rosewood, Sugar, Ginger, Moroccan Rose, Civet (*animal-friendly/synthetic), Amber, Musk, Ambergris (* animal-friendly/synthetic)) In the vial: I don't want to get too excited but seriously, where has this fragrance been all my life?! It's so well blended but my nose clearly favours the ROSE and SUGARY AMBER that I absolutely love and fingers crossed it plays well with my chemistry. Applied: Could it be? Have I finally stumbled across a rose perfume that I can wear with no painful regrets or one that doesn't smell like hairspray? YES! Yes, I have. Complete thoughts fail me as I sit here and forgive me if I ramble or forego the "this opens with" but no simple description will do this haunting masterpiece justice (you just need to experience it for yourself). For me, SUGAR HICCUP is like wearable ethereal gossamer, a beautiful reminder of the lost past and I'm going to wear this floral scent year round. There is a warmth to the notes that will transition well for the colder months but there is also something so perfect about it for summer and spring (the ginger?). This jewel needs to come home to me as soon as possible and be nestled alongside my professional/confidence in a bottle cache of treasured fragrances (*full feature article coming soon if I can articulate on this wonder). SCARECROW (Listed Notes: Red Apple, Orange, Anise, Hay Absolute, Tobacco, Fenugreek, Cardamom, Vanilla, Vetiver) In the vial: Realistic COUNTRY FALL in all its spectacular glory! It's: breathtaking pastoral landscapes, climbing apple trees, long solitary walks in the hollow, haunted hayrides, apple festivals with spiced treats, corn mazes, ghost trails all magnificently captured and released in a flood of additional images. Just fragrance nirvana with special nostalgic properties and I want to live in the vial. Applied: I am truly in the presence of an evil scent genius who has somehow conjured into existence my autumn holy grail fragrance. It only took a year to stumble across this gem and as I dab (then paint then downright slather this fragrance on) and bask in everything this vial has to offer, I sorely wish SCARECROW came in multiple forms (candle, hair and bath for starters) because I'm seriously ready to just dump the vial over my head right now as I'm typing; it's so good! After going through pages on my extensive trove of fall themed oils, believe it or not, SCARECROW is the first to contain hay absolute and I'm delighted to share that it amps on my skin along with vanilla, cardamom and vetiver. If I can pull my nose away long enough and try to concentrate there is also something slightly smoky about it (the tobacco?) Sadly I must admit my treacherous skin chemistry causes this scent of my dreams to fade faster than the other vials I sampled in my pack but I have learned how to combat that baleful side of my chemical makeup with tricks that work for these few poor unfortunate oils and all I have left to say is: Take my money now MX Perfume! (*full feature coming soon on the 5ml bottle) ZOMBIE FEAST (Listed Notes: Hyssop, Thyme, Rum, Cognac, Coconut, Hazelnut, White Chocolate, Vanilla) In the vial: COCONUT, WHITE CHOCOLATE, HAZELNUT and VANILLA with a drop of booze in the background. ZOMBIE FEAST is definitely the gourmand option of the samples. I have no idea how this is going to play out but I'm excited to have it. Applied: You know I've always wondered what zombies smell in the air as they chase around potential victims on the screen and I should have known it would be something crave-worthy and positively yummy. On me, ZOMBIE FEAST is not "tropical" even with the coconut, it's akin to a decadent expensive creamy vanilla truffle with shredded coconut and hazelnut adorning it. A great choice for those of us who are wary of coconut and the "beachy realm" (no beach or suntanning lotion here just a toothsome confection that is sure to garner compliments). Like all the vials I tried ZOMBIE FEAST is very wearable in this insufferable summer heat and is another fragrance I will be reaching for when I'm not dousing myself in SCARECROW (hope the bottle lasts until fall). WHITE SUNSHINE (Listed Notes: Bergamot, Grapefruit, Geranium, Iris, Jasmine, White Musk, Civet (*animal-friendly/synthetic), Oakmoss, Patchouli, Vanilla, Labdanum) In the vial: CITRUS and FLORALS that carry a summer breeze with it. I have a strong feeling I'm going to love this. Applied: It took me several times wearing WHITE SUNSHINE to figure out what this stunning fragrance reminded me of and it may sound odd but two things come to mind anymore when I'm enjoying this superbly blended creation, one is if the magical bioluminescence of a firefly had a scent it would be WHITE SUNSHINE and the other is the multi-faceted piece of symbolism known as the "green light" in The Great Gatsby. There is a romantic aspect to this fragrance that is both dreamy and complex but still ethereal (just out of reach) and I simply adore it. Into the basket, you go WHITE SUNSHINE and now I want to go outside and reread The Great Gatsby for the 180th time. DARK & STORMY (Listed Notes: Petrichor, Bergamot, Pear, Gardenia, Patchouli, Blue Musk, Leather (*animal-friendly/synthetic), Amber) *Too late did I see that gardenia was a listed note and for those readers following my ramblings, you will recall gardenia and I haven't played well in the recent past. Oh dear now I'm worried. In the vial: ...Did I receive the right vial? What is that exquisite note greeting me under the lovely petrichor, patchouli and bergamot? If this is what gardenias really smell like please get me a huge bouquet of them. I hate to get excited but it's impossible not to. Fingers and toes crossed... Applied: This may be called DARK & STORMY and I should be cursing my chemistry right now for turning this anticipated perfume into a calming spring rainshower versus a violent storm but oddly I'm not, I'm actually quite smitten as I sit here. On me, DARK & STORMY takes me away to a charming Old Hollywood set with a legendary starlet lounging in the parlour as a refreshing rain hits the window. Her trademark fragrance is creamy gardenia and it gently follows in her wake and lingers on the leather-bound script on the table as she moves to each new scene ready for her closeup. Overall another vintage romance in the making and I think MX Perfume just helped me turn a huge corner on appreciating a certain floral. Into the basket. BIZZARO (Listed Notes: Tangerine, Clary Sage, Raspberry, Mango, Jasmine, Gardenia, Cardamom, Olibanum, Blue Musk, Ambergris (*animal-friendly/synthetic)) In the vial: FRANKINCENSE, CARDAMOM, SAGE. There is probably a fruit note as well but my nose loves to single out resins, spice and herbs in anything. I'm extremely intrigued by this vial. Applied: Clary Sage greets me first and steers BIZZARO into the masculine realm (I bet this would smell amazing on a man) but as it dries the gardenia glides over along with the jasmine and an unknown fruit note slowly turning this fragrance on me to more feminine with a sprinkle of warm spice from the cardamom. It smells so expensive and I think it will only get better with aging. BLOOD LUST (Listed Notes: Wormwood, Tarragon, Citrus, Ajowan, Plum Blossom, Jasmine, Olibanum, Patchouli, Oudwood, Vanilla) In the vial: This strangely fascinating vial keeps changing every time I open it to test. Right now I detect JASMINE, CITRUS, PATCHOULI and TARRAGON. And now there's OUDWOOD. If BLOOD LUST is morphing already I can't wait to try it on. Applied: On me, jasmine commands the show for several minutes along with wormwood then prized plum and a twist of citrus slowly appears. When BLOOD LUST completely dries vanilla, oudwood and earthy patchouli stay the longest and keeps my nose down to my wrist. Like BIZZARO this perfume smells expensive and is one of the more masculine vials but still appropriate for a lady. Victorian Fragrance Co. *Sadly this line has been discontinued but it is definitely worth sharing. A special thank you to the owner for allowing me the chance to sample and enjoy these perfumes centred around my favourite era of time* PAPER MOON (Listed Notes: Honey, Almond, Thyme, Pear, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Musk) I've always had some kind of unexplainable connection to the moon and I'm so happy the owner sent this creamy otherworldly creation to me. PAPER MOON is so aptly named as it has this beautifully strange and wonderful papery-powdery quality to it and I can't stop smelling my wrists. This perfume is like an invisible strand of pearls that serves as the perfect final accessory to stand apart from the mundane but still stay classy and stately in any setting (also compliments any attire choice). I absolutely adore it! DAPPER (Listed Notes: Bergamot, Lemon, Herbs, Carnation, Rose, Cedar, Sandalwood, Labdanum) I dab some DAPPER on when I'm dressed to the nines and want to beat the summer heat with something fancy and formal noted. I've already put a noticeable dent in the bottle so this will be another fragrance I'll be rationing but it is well worth it with the spicy and a smoke-like floral that opens with a delightful citrus and herbaceous note combination that actually stays on my finicky skin. Hours later, the florals with spice slowly fade and the final call goes to the sandalwood and cedar that stays into the next morning. They don't make vintage smelling perfumes like this anymore which is truly a shame. THE MOORS ( Listed Notes: Heather, Lilac, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean) *still currently aging but it is very promising with a floral mossy noted mixture that makes me want to hop a plane to the UK so badly (and probably never come back) to see the real moors. AUTUMN EVENTIDE (Listed Notes: Hay, Plum, Apple, Orange, Cinnamon, Clove, Musk, Blonde Tobacco) I can never have too many spiced apple oils and AUTUMN EVENTIDE is a classic that I will tuck into my fall trove. This perfume lasts longer in my hair and I love walking around in a halo of warmth and fruit with a scattering of tobacco. Definitely a keeper in my book. BLACK BOMBAZINE (Listed Notes: Frankincense, Labdanum, Black Musk, Clove, Plum, Rosewood) In the vial, this oil is a boozy floral with clove but completely transforms once it hits the skin and BLACK BOMBAZINE is for the plum and wood note lovers. It is meant to heavy and acts upon the imagination creating visions of stopped clocks and covered mirrors. Another keeper for reading certain subjects of interest. STILL LIFE (Listed Notes: Oakmoss, Narcissus, Musk, Peony, Lily, Mandarin) This fragrance starts off with a burst of addicting sharp lemon and peony that then dries down to a vintage scent collage leaning toward more powdery on me but still noticeably floral. This is a good oil to wake up and start the day with. TEA & CRUMPETS (Listed Notes: Black Tea, Milk, Musk, Red Apple, Orange) True to its name TEA & CRUMPETS is steeped tea with a splash of lemon and milk. A great summer alternative to the tropical fruits and sweet gourmands. I don't know what it is about apples and oranges that never seem to fair well with my temperamental skin chemistry (they sadly fade very quickly). alkemia.etsy.com Thoughts: -You would be forgiven for thinking this marvellous creation is solely gourmand as the first sniff is luscious dark cacao and fresh lavender blooms with a hint of cardamon you can't seem to put down but Fleurs Historiques et Cacao is so much more and is full of surprises once it hits the skin. Right away a stately presence emerges from this blending stimulating the senses further along with your imagination sweeping you back to a courtly era others only dream they could present in a bottle then this crafted beauty fondly bids you farewell hours later with a soft floral-powdery wave akin to from a delicate lace handkerchief. Overall, absolutely inspiring and lovely for summer. Brava Alkemia! One scent at a time: Fleurs Historiques et Cacao *ULTIME version (Listed Notes: Dark Cacao, French Lavender Flowers, Black Cardamon Pods, Tea with Lemon Peel, Grapefruit Blossom and Vanilla Musk. In the bottle: FRENCH LAVENDER BLOOMS and ground dark CACOA with a hint of CARDAMON waiting in the background, it's sophisticated and a little heady. I can easily tell how this scent mixture would ensnare a king (it's simply memorable and beautifully addictive--Madame de Pompadour knew exactly what she was doing with this historic fragrance recipe). I must don lace and gold tonight, Fleurs Historiques et Cacao definitely demands my best! Applied: What we are presented with is an unapologetic feminine fragrance that commands your attention and sweeps you away to another time and place when it hits the skin. I immediately get the decadent cacao with the floral of the lavender blooms and these two play amazingly well with one another creating visions of a gilded French boudoir back in the 18th century with an open large window directly facing a summer parterre. There is something very airy even delicate about Fleurs Historiques et Cacao but at the same time, confident and I'm astonished the cacao is lasting on my skin (I must remember to purchase the ULTIME again if cacao is a listed note). I must also stop as I am getting looks from my coworkers as I obsessively sniff my wrists and move my hair so the blended poetry of the notes (now accompanied by a warm cardamon and noticeable bright citrus) takes me away each time my curls move. You know what, let them look, I don't care; this is a special night and I desired a fragrance that said "I have arrived in life" and Fleurs Historiques et Cacao is exactly what I wanted and will mean something whenever I wear it. Later long into the night, the floral and slight sweetness (that never resembles the scent of a bakery) takes on a wisp of romantic vanilla musk and then this perfume slowly fades with a glorious powdery finish that follows me out the door and into the light of dawn. If we must than though wouldn't it be great to step out with a certain flair that is not only unique but practical? And wouldn't it be something to carry your favourite self-confessed "security blanket" known simply as your treasured novel of choice with you? Highly Recommended. universalzone.etsy.com Full Bottles: Falling Stars at Winter Solstice Yuletide Blessing 2017 Combined Thoughts: Sometimes we hold on to and treasure simple things that allow good memories into our dreams and follow us when we are awake with softly whispered tidings of encouragement and love. These are the fragrances that provide me with just that whenever I wear them and bring me back to: once happy holidays, smiling faces, dancing to polka music, festoons of sparkly poinsettias and rooms filled with warmth and traditions. One scent at a time: -This first fragrance is a holiday snapshot in a bottle for me as this makes me think of standing next to the fireplace and hanging ornaments (with such care and childish innocent but terrible decoration sense) on the freshly standing tree with snow melting on the floor and autumn leaves still stuck in the branches from being dragged in through the field. It's incredibly atmospheric and I don't want to open my eyes to realize those days are long gone. It's so strange how memory can be attached to a scent and Falling Stars at Winter Solstice acts like a balm for me this time of year and I don't ever want to be without this fragrance as it is one I love to read with and fall asleep wearing. Falling Stars at Winter Solstice (Listed Notes: Balsam Pine, Dark myrrh, Somalian Frankincense, Snow, Woodsmoke) What I'm hoping for: I have quite the perfume oil collection now that spans from spring to fall and I need something "wintery". The pine with myrrh, frankincense and woodsmoke seem to be a safe exploration plus the lovely name caught my full attention. In the vial/bottle: WOODSMOKE and PINE, just like the name it's gorgeous. I can't help but think of sled riding, decorating the perfect tree and once happy holidays. Applied: Oh Falling Stars at Winter Solstice is magical, the woodsmoke is my favourite but the pine with teasing myrrh and frankincense are all beautiful accompanying notes and this in no way resembles a cheap candle, it's more complex and so much deeper than I was expecting. This is without a doubt one of the most comforting scents that has joined my collection. I wish I could wear the fragrance every day in winter to work but I currently sit by someone who is highly allergic to pine scents and I must be respectful of that. I will keep this jewel at home to fall asleep with as I can only have the sweetest dreams and relaxing hours cuddled up with a good book when wearing Falling Stars at Winter Solstice. Words that come to mind: windswept snowy hills, twinkling stars, childish wonder, joyous reunions One scent at a time: -Finally, I must share this chance gem that holds past, present and future lost memories and is like a soothing melody from another place and time. It's everything bright you want to hold close especially into the new year. I don't know if there is already a name for the fragrant essence of hope or spirit of Christmas but it should be Yuletide Blessing 2017 by Alkemia Perfumes. Brava Alkemia! Yuletide Blessing 2017 (Listed Notes: Pears, Apples, Cinnamon, Clove, Black Currant, Gingerbread, Oakwood, Balsam Pine and Woodsmoke) What I'm hoping for and what called to me: When I saw the Yuletide collection show up on December 1st this was one of the first perfumes I placed in my basket because all the listed notes called out to me and I was completely charmed by the descriptions of the unique meanings of each note, it sounds like an ancient potion of good luck and prosperity for the new year (all things I can never turn down and the special pricing sweetens the pot). I would love to find a perfume that perhaps smells like a pomander but would be happy with smoke and pine with a fruitiness. In the bottle: There must be some kind of luck or magic infused in this bottle as Yuletide Blessing 2017 is the Holiday/Christmas perfume I have been searching for. It's FRUIT, SPICE, RESIN and is absolutely magnificent! This is everything I was hoping to find. I can't stop smelling this oil, each time I slowly move the uncapped bottle there is something else that surfaces and I can't help but close my eyes and enjoy every second. I could seriously just sit here and smell the bottle all day long. Applied: Yuletide Blessing 2017 is stunning, the spiced pear with pine greets me first and I'm in love with everything this perfume has to offer. It also makes me shed a tear but a happy one as I know someone very special who I miss everyday would have absolutely loved this oil and found such joy reading about the different meanings of each note and I can think of only good memories right now. Yuletide Blessing 2017 continues to change from light to deep and it's almost like a nearly forgotten melody is playing around me that I can't place. As this perfume dries I get the gingerbread with the smallest hint of woodsmoke but then my chemistry brings back the pine with apple and currant which is the last to leave me the next day. I can't write enough how much I'm enjoying this perfume and yes I'm getting looks at work as I can't stop smelling myself but I don't care (curiously the person who I mentioned earlier who is highly allergic to pine scents hasn't sneezed or complained but still I wear only the smallest dabs when I know he is in the room). Share the wealth as I tell everyone about this lovely wonder and I will be purchasing a backup bottle of this year's formula before it's all gone. Alkemia Perfumes alkemia.etsy.com Vials & a Bottle: Hygge Yule Alchemy 2017 Winter Torchsong Gifts of the Magi A Darkness Shining in Brightness Vixen Combined Thoughts: Times have certainly changed but some things still seem to stay the same when it comes to me because instead of tiptoeing downstairs at home in the magical early hours of December 25th as an excited child just waiting for the moment when expectation and temptation would be released in a shower of different surprises, I was sneaking away from my desk at work as an adult on December 1st to catch the first glimpse of Alkemia's Yuletide Collection with wonder and ultimately fighting my spotty phone connection to order the perfumes that called out to me and dashing to my frozen over mailbox for my parcel of goodies a few days later. In the end, I must say I wasn't disappointed as these scents capture in various ways past, present and future hopes and seasonal warmth (thank you Auntie Alkemia!). One scent at a time: Hygge (Listed Notes: Oven-warm Gingerbread, Cardamon Rolls, Iced Sugar Cookies, Spiced Vanilla) What I'm hoping for: Joining the perfume oil party late it seems my list of "missed out on" fragrances continue to grow and Yuletide Temptress is one I have been trying to track down ever since I read about it shortly after joining ETSY and finding Alkemia. So I'm hoping Hygge is something like that and is a revival of another vanilla gourmand fragrance that had divinity candy listed that I thought too long on and went back later for and it was all claimed. Hopefully, this new release is a fine substitute for those elusive perfumes plus how can I resist anything with gingerbread and sugar cookies listed? Keeping in mind my luck and how much I love and treasure All Hallow's Eve 2017 (*I wish I got back in time to purchase the rollerball version) and Book of Shadows, Hygge will be another "no sample first" purchase. In the bottle: Alkemia you have delivered once again all you promise as this is like holding a bowl of freshly mixed gingerbread cookie dough. It's divine and exactly what I was hoping to find under the shiny gold cap. Applied: Sometimes I really hate my skin chemistry as this starts out like heavenly baked goodness that I can't stop smelling on my wrists and makes me want to snuggle up with a long book but after a short time it disappears completely and there is an unexpected beeswax note remaining that reminds me of my experience with Honeycakes for Harvest Moon. To be honest, Hygge reminds me of a spicier version of Honeycakes for Harvest Moon and also like that seasonal treat I think I will have to use this perfume solely in my hair or on my scarves which works out perfect for this time of year but I still wish this would have worked for my skin. In my hair: Much deeper and longer lasting, there is also a hint of smokey warmth hidden that comes out and in my hair my chemistry seems to apologize for earlier and morphs this with a slightly buttery honey spice. I love this! If you have already fallen for Honeycakes for Harvest Moon grab a bottle of Hygge for your vanity. Words that come to mind: Winter spiced comfort, bakery strands, fading memories Yule Alchemy 2017 (Listed Notes: Rich Butterscotch Toffee, slightly burnt Sugar Cookies, and Fresh Honeycake) *this is an exclusive thank you gift from Alkemia (you're the best Alkemia!) if you spend over $45 on one order, while supplies last if there ever was a time to get some gifts for others (or yourself) it is now. In the bottle: Delectable BUTTERSCOTCH with HONEY it doesn't even smell like "perfume" it smells like something you could drink or bake with (please don't try that). This reminds me of Bonfire Toffees and Woodsmoked Oud but is sweeter without the smoke note (that can be remedied with a little Smoke & Mirrors depending on my mood) or sharpness (which may work great for me as the Bonfire Toffees and Woodsmoked Oud sadly didn't play well with my chemistry when solely applied and had to be tampered with another fall classic). In my hair: *I'm finding more and more this time of year I love to wear sweet fragrances in my hair and I'm familiar what "honey" does on my skin so I carefully dampened my curls and ran some Yule Alchemy through before going out the door for the night. A halo of butterscotch follows me and the warm vanilla comes out with the creamy toffee, this is a wonderful winter treat and would blend delightfully well with so many different gourmand scents or quiet florals combinations I have waiting to experiment with. Words that come to mind: buttery delight, sweet halo, fall to winter dulcet delight, so many possibilities Winter Torchsong (Listed Notes: Rose de Noel, Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Cinnamon Aldehyde, Plum Wine, Honeycomb, Balsam Pine, Amber) What I'm hoping: Once again I waited too long and missed out on a fragrance that has intrigued me that being this time Yule Rose (sometimes too much research can go against me, I should have just jumped at the bottle and ignored the poor amount reviews I found) hopefully Winter Torchsong along with its gorgeous name is a remake of what "could have been" with Yule Rose for me, as I love delicate rose fragrances with amber and pine is a must in my book for this time of year. In the vial: ROSE and CINNAMON SOAP, I wasn't expecting that but that was my fault as I missed the "aldehyde" note listed. I know others love "clean or soap notes" but my chemistry usually amps those to almost headache inducing levels but still I'm willing to try this as this reminds me of Amour Conjure which makes me feel a vintage femme fatale whenever I wear it. Winter Torchsong seems (and is hopefully) a slightly aquatic reverse just missing the earthy patchouli and polish of copper. Applied: This is pretty and smells upscale but on me, the soap note overwhelms all the underlying florals and this starts very strong (even with a tiny dab). The beautiful soft rose with pine and a little tartness from I'm guessing the Plum Wine makes this tolerable and I'm glad I kept this on as after a few hours the aldehydes loosened their talons on me (happy to jot down surprisingly not one headache to report though) and gave way to rose, amber and a touch of evergreen that is just timeless and welcoming. If I could have those last few hours experience from the first application this would be a certain full bottle purchase but as the aldehydes takes over for far too long, I think this will be a "test now and maybe once more" before seeing if someone I know who loves "clean florals" would like this. This perfume just may not be for me but it has convinced me I need to hunt down a bottle of Yule Rose as I have a strong feeling that it is the magical floral winter collaboration I have been searching for. (**please remember everyone's skin chemistry is different and what my chemistry does with one note may not happen on someone else. That's the unique beauty of perfume oils, they react with everyone differently- please don't hesitate to try a sample of something if it interests you). Gifts of the Magi (Listed Notes: Aged Golden Amber, Ethiopian Frankincense, Kenyan Opopanax cured with aromatic herbs - Salam Bay Leaves, Pink Peppercorns, Spicebush, Thyme, Coriander, Tonka Beans, and Deerstongue Fern. Assam Oud, Andalusian Labdanum, Cedar of Lebanon infused with Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla; Dokha Tobacco infused with rare Criollo Cacao Beans, and Tolu Balsam.) What I'm hoping for: Just looking at the extensive note list, this is one perfume I need to try as this sounds like something I would love with the amber, frankincense and herbs with vanilla and pine. In the vial: Like opening an ancient wooden box, it's not one note but a dazzling collage of precious resins and curious herbs. Absolutely magnificent. Applied: On this vial I have attached a clear message to "use sparingly" as this was a costly sample but I don't think Gifts of the Magi is going to last long and I may end up spending the most I ever have for a full bottle of perfume. Again it's not one note but a patchwork that makes this oil a classic and a must-have as it brings together reminders of the reason for the season and future promises for the new year. The longer Gifts of the Magi sits and dries the ancient box opens further to reveal so much that is exotic but somehow familiar. Perhaps this is not your typical everyday perfume but something to bring out for those special occasions or to fall asleep with. If I had to find one negative it is again with my chemistry that unexpectedly amps the tobacco and turns this slightly masculine which keeps me from taking this mysterious perfume out for the night (I love it but others I work with I don't think would appreciate it). I will try to be good (as I have spent so much this year alone on oils) and make this sample last until next year and then maybe buy a full bottle to keep at home. Words that come to mind: exotic box of resins, gifts from afar, winter dreams A Darkness Shining in Brightness (Listed Notes: Golden Amber, Dark Aged Labdanum, Spiced Black Tea) What I'm hoping for and what called to me: For some unknown reason I've been skipping overly caffeinated drinks and instead partaking in a small cup of hot tea at night to keep myself awake and in the early hours of one recent past-midnight shift I thought- I want to smell like refined tea. Just like that I was on the hunt for another curious idea of what I wanted to smell on myself. Luckily Alkemia just released a tea fragrance (with an another catchy name inspired by a famous book) for their Yuletide Collection and the amber with labdanum sounded like something that would fit my wishes. In the vial: TEA, AMBER and RESIN. Alkemia never disappoints with what they promise on their listed notes, they mean what they say and never try to hide a single note. That's what I have come to love about this house of fragrance and of course the way the fragrances tell their own stories to the wearer and I have a feeling this perfume has quite the story to share. Applied: Absolutely this one has a story waiting for me. A Darkness Shining in Brightness opens with a promised spiced tea note that has a minor creaminess behind it and blame it on the literature I'm reading at the moment but I can't help but imagine a genteel lady of leisure in the Edwardian era who is tipping her cup slowly and glancing across the rim to her handsome visitor who sits a respectful and proper distance away. Everything in this scene is proper and a pleasant afternoon of cultivated conversation follows but then the creaminess detected turns sensuous and powdery as this perfume dries and the wintery-evening shadows lengthen and those exchanged glances turn hot and urgent with that the same upright lady excuses herself and her gentleman caller follows her away from the parlor to a partially open door and woah this perfume is naughty. It goes from tea gown to boudoir trimmed lacy fittings and the first night I was just innocently testing this I caught myself all of sudden the night before Christmas Eve driving into work thinking: this is not a Christmas perfume! No it certainly is not and I believe I am falling in love with this scent all the more because of that. On me I could swear there is a hint of lemon but then star anise making up the "spice" in this and when the completely unexpected powder (with a drop of vanilla) hits (ah that powder note from Alkemia I can't get enough of) I am bewitched in the best way and I do believe this will be a full bottle purchase once I use every last drop from the vial. Just like the quote this perfume is named from: there is something obscure about it that is hard to forget. Words that come to mind: Not another word, king's mistress, refined seduction, tea gown to lacy underthings Vixen (Listed Notes: White Amber, luminous late summer night blooming florals, autumnal spice, Golden Musk, Apple Peel, Sugar Pumpkin, Jasmine Tea, Moss) What I'm hoping for: I don't know how but this fragrance keeps falling off my lists of "I need to try this" when I can choose a generous free sample. Not this time, the autumn spice, amber and sugar pumpkin are coming home to me. The name and use of pumpkin are very clever. Plus how could I resist a perfume based on a legend about forest shapeshifting fox spirits? In the vial: This was well worth the wait as this is graceful with APPLE, AMBER and hints of FLORAL, SPICE along with PUMPKIN hovering just out of reach. Ultimately unique and something I can't wait to try on. Applied: Just like the shapeshifting legends of old this perfume is based on, Vixen morphs to reveal unexpected powder with apple, spice and sweet pumpkin. Absolutely inspiring, Alkemia you've done it again! It's perfectly ethereal but elusive and like an old ballad or scent from a love story. That powder note is my passage to another time and this is sure to be a full bottle purchase soon (perhaps in spring so it can age properly for its late summer to fall debut). Words that come to mind: Masquerade Soirée, haunting scent ballad, late summer into fall, powdery vision alkemia.etsy.com Full Bottles and one sample *soon to be a full bottle purchase December 2017 La Belle Époque Les Courtisanes The Raven Combined Thoughts: These three gems all share something exceptional about them: they are all transporting and are mettle in a bottle (or vial) and can unlock your secret self (or reveal the unknown). Each also tells their own unique story to the wearer with a diversity of: warmth, coolness, floral, spice and amber. They might not be for everyone but I invite anyone to just see where these three beauties will lead you in memory, emotion, style and exploration into unfamiliar history (or legend). You may be surprised by the end of the day (or night) what you learn. One scent at a time: -This perfume I wish to formally introduce to the modern audience is one I can't stop reaching for (the full-size bottle is peacefully aging at the moment but the sample only has a few drops left) as it is floral sophistication at its finest. This is no childhood romp in the garden but a perfect scent passage to another time and place. One of my absolute favourites that is poise, romance and refinement gorgeously captured in a bottle (you can't help but hold your head high when you walk into a room with this powdery vision because ladies and gentlemen this is La Belle Époque by Alkemia Perfumes). Brava Alkemia! La Belle Époque: (Listed Notes: Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose, Iris, Rose, and Lily of the Valley blended with Plum, Apricot, Tahitian Vanilla, Blonde Amber, Bitter Almond, Oakmoss and Powdery Musk) What I'm hoping for: To experience a glimmer of the Gilded Age which this fragrance is said to be an ode to. I love how Alkemia describes perfumes in their catalogue, you're sure to find a time, a place or emotion that you want desperately to visit or become a part of your personal style. In the vial/bottle: FLORAL POWDER and RESIN that just harkens back to a splendid time of courtliness, swishing gowns, tipped hats and frivolous ventures. Applied: Class and distinction with the FLORAL, it is what you wished your skin smelled naturally like. Definitely a mature fragrance and is by no means a childhood romp in the garden, this is romantic and earthy with the RESIN which my skin seems to respond positively to. I'm faintly getting a fruit (APRICOT is my guess as it seems to really amp on my skin). I'm still "training my nose" but I'm getting a hint of VANILLA as well. This is not your everyday scent and it demands your best attire and adornments but also rewards you with confidence that lasts long after that final wisp of something special leaves you the next day. Words that come to mind: THE Mrs Astor's ball, classic romantic elegance, extravagant powdery floral, First Four Hundred, Ormolu One scent at a time: -This next fragrance loves to accompany me to work and is beautiful confidence in a bottle. Like all my favourites it does require some patient aging but this particular perfume has garnered the most compliments out of any in my oil collection and I must say it is well worth the wait to reveal something beyond irresistible and memorable. Too good to not share and deserves a special TREASURED/FEATURED label. Brava Alkemia! Les Courtisanes (Listed Notes: Pear, Peach Blossom, Apricot, Lychees, Nutmeg, White Amber, White Florals, and sweet Woods.) What I was hoping for and what called to me: This was another curious wandering around Alkemia's shelves of popular recommendations. My chemistry seems to warm toward gourmands so this also may work in my favor plus because of Alkemia I no longer fear amber and can put those horrible memories of sharp headaches from certain commercial spray nightmares behind me forever (never will I step foot in an over-marketed bath and scent store again). I'm ready to try anything but I must say I'm really excited about the nutmeg note listed (I can never have too many of those in my autumn cache.) In the vial/bottle: PEAR, AMBER, SWEETNESS but with WARMTH and a hit of SPICE- oh this is exquisite. There is a surprising empowering quality to it with a secret behind closed doors essence but something tells me it will need some aging which is okay I can wait (I think...well maybe after a couple more sniffs). Applied: *a few weeks later I took it out to the public and to one important work-related travel venture: This is a perfect scent for the end of summer into the colder snap of fall, I love this. The fruit pairs splendidly with the amber and I get that flourish of nutmeg that makes this a great autumn fragrance (summer warmth meets approaching golden harvest). I also get a warm vanilla note but it is not listed among the ones on the page (maybe oleander? I know I can smell vanilla and I was even asked one night if I had vanilla on.) This perfume pulses warmth on me as well and it smells so expensive but wears well with anything. A sure full bottle purchase and future article (more people need to try this). Words that come to mind: confidence in a bottle, keyhole secrets, empowering warmth, late summer into winter One scent at a time: -Last but certainly not least is one fragrance that is an entrancing beautifully wicked ode to everything black as black. It brings to mind lost traditions and that certain myths and legends could be true (albeit only slightly exaggerated to bring you closer to the fire and a travelling bard). The collection of spice, floral, leather and ink also skips into the mists of time and could be the haunting scent associated with favoured ghost stories and the ominous feeling of waiting nightly shadows and the unknown. If there ever was a perfect perfume for a real or imagined villainess this would be it. Too good to not share and deserves a special TREASURED/FEATURED label. Brava Alkemia! The Raven (Listed Notes: Ebony Heartwood, Black Amber, Piper Nigrum, Blackseed (habbatul barakah), Black Bengal Cardamon, Black Ink, Nigella (Black Coriander), Black Iris, Violet Leaves, and Leather (*animal-friendly)) What I was hoping for and what called to me: After losing all reason with Book of Shadows and All Hallow's Eve (October 2017), I found I really enjoy certain notes (or finally found perfumes that work with the particular notes that never agreed with me) and I went searching for something possibly similar in Alkemia's extensive library. The peppercorn, ink and various notes in The Raven seemed worth a try and suitable for this time of year. In the vial/bottle: I have no idea what I'm smelling but I love it! It's not one note but a collage of murkiness that conjures visions of dark haunted forests and forgotten practices. It's somehow GREEN-BLACK, I don't know how to explain it. Alkemia what majick have you unleashed? Applied: This is it, this is the scent I have been waiting for! It's the essence of every real and imagined villainess in history and legends. It's beauty, cunning, power and dangerous seduction. Oddly I still can't identify one note but I really get that GREEN-BLACK impression again with images of legendary Avalon then shifts to a mist swirled surrounded tower and then a lone piano playing but no one is in the room. This perfume certainly contains a labyrinth of secrets, stories and will definitely be a full bottle purchase. I've listened to quite a few interesting stories and probably bored to tears my colleagues with my own incessant ramblings on different trivia, book recommendations and of course my er... obsession? fantasy? determined goal? What have you, of being the first in line if they ever have time travel possible in our lifetime. Crazy yes but it helps pass the enclosing darkness and time to think what it would be like to go back to simpler eras and I always come back to the late Victorian era to early 20th century as my choices of escape. I can't explain exactly what is so drawing or absolutely captivating about those time periods (perhaps a past life?), maybe it's the forgotten customs, values, work ethics or common courtesies (honestly doesn't a gentleman bother to open a door or pull a chair out for lady anymore?). Send me back to those good old days please because I'm ready and I have the jewellery in my antique portmanteau packed just waiting for that ticket. I know I'm not alone judging by the number of shops and specialty fashions that cater to those and alter reality for a few flashing seconds as you open a presented box or view a new listing that harkens back to bygone eras of sophistication and forgotten gentility. You can't escape or deny it as they welcome you to think about another place and time and I found all that to be true with Titanic Temptations (titanictempations.etsy.com). Being one of the introductory shops (along with Boheme Bijou (bohemebijou.etsy.com) that I purchased from when I joined ETSY and happily fallen into a new way to shop (Goodbye Amazon) for pieces of inspiration and scents of the past. Here are my first earrings from this lovely shop: As always the picture doesn't do these ear drops justice, they have facets and crackles in the stone that when you hold to the light they just glow with a real ruby's intensity. They are extremely well made and are sure to give me years of enjoyable wear. I also given a generous coupon with my first order and can't wait to shop at Titanic Temptations again. This storefront is something to see as the jewelry artist takes inspiration for her designs from the Victorian, Edwardian eras and even plays with the Steampunk theme creating one of a kind treasures which call to anyone who appreciates sparkly masterpieces that you will find a place in your wardrobe for or simply demand you buy something worthy (I've already purchased numerous blouses to go with my earrings) and it's hard to resist when you see that next twinkle of color or style you know needs to be with you. I know I couldn't resist because here was my next purchase: Admittedly I'm usually not a huge fan of the color orange but something special caught my attention with these baubles and I revisited the page for days. So glad I finally purchased these as they hold all the vibrant shades of autumn and have the swirled caps that bring the Victorian elegance that I love to find in unexpected places. They are also made of carnelian and jade both ancient special property stones said to bring good luck, happiness and confidence to the wearer (sounds good to me). I better be careful though if this shop could get me to like orange there's no telling what I may buy next (be afraid pocketbook and get ready for November 24th). Full Bottles: Smoke & Mirrors Book of Shadows All Hallow's Eve (October 2017) One scent at a time: -Like a classic strand of pearls, Smoke & Mirrors compliments all it touches with coolness to the skin that then warms to become an embodiment of your personal style and is a reminder of days gone by. It is a phenomenal fragrance that is beautifully simple but powerfully evoking and comforting that can be worn alone but blends with and adds some mystique or delicious depth to practically any perfume. I'm smitten and this is a staple scent I don't ever want to run out of. Too good to not share and deserves a special TREASURED/FEATURED label. Brava Alkemia! Smoke & Mirrors (Listed Notes: Woodsmoke and Vanilla) What I was hoping for: Certain scents allow me to go to a happy memory and woodsmoke is one aroma that takes me to childhood camping trips, special cookouts and late night talks beside the fireside. It may not sound like much but I just want a real woodsmoke scent with rustling leaves and bright moonlight coming to mind as soon as I get a familiar wisp. In the bottle: Absolute bliss! Better than I expected as this takes me to late summer to fall country cookouts with hot savoury food, music, dancing by the firelight and losing yourself in staring at the night skies. The WOODSMOKE is dead on. Simple but beautiful. Applied: I get that glorious woodsmoke as the front welcoming note and that's all I need but I do faintly get a fleeting whisper of vanilla that adds a sweetness to this peaceful blend. I read that this perfume is meant to layer with others and I can't wait to see what perfumes perform well together with this wonder. It's utterly transporting to your most ultimate room of desires filled with mystery, adventure and is a strangely beautiful ode to our swoon-worthy affairs with others' stories. Book of Shadows- (Listed Notes: Parchment Paper, Antique ink, Leather bindings (*animal-friendly), and Rare Incenses) What I was hoping for and what called to me: I have been looking everywhere for a convincing "old book smell" and when I saw the late season (Autumn/Halloween collection) was released I knew I had to try this. Alkemia has already captured my childhood (and admittedly a few of my secret desires) in different surprising bottles so let's see if they can give me a treat and not a trick. In the vial/bottle: Fellow written/printed word fanciers (okay book lovers aka: we proud novel sniffers) rejoice and get a bottle of Book of Shadows now because this is our beautifully strange sanctuary that we have been waiting for! Absolutely as promised, it magnificent. It's like turning an aged book and fanning the pages as fast as you can. It's crumbly, it's dusty and loved! Applied: This has to be the most complex perfume that has joined my collection. I get every note but it transforms and shifts creating images of different types of genres of literature. There's bitter almond from your classic murder mystery (how about some cyanide with your tea?), violets from a tragic gothic romance, some type of sweet fruit (grape?) from your cookbook shelf and so many other unfamiliar notes that I have yet to explore in the shadows. Interestingly, the leather is pronounced on me and this is one of the strongest throwing fragrances I have, it loves to twirl and snag at other bottles so I will have to remember that or I will have quiet florals with leather (interesting concept...but not at this time). A tiny dab is all I need. Words that come to mind: Pagemistress, dark library in a bottle, grimoire of strange beauty -All Hallow's Eve (October 2017) is everything I love in a bottle: a dark luring promise, wisps of mystery and a release of images that surprise and make me want more. This may be my first bottle of the hugely popular recipe to capture the season and nostalgia but it certainly will not be my last. All Hallow's Eve (October 2017) (Listed Notes: Bourbon Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Cardamon Pods, Star Anise, Candied Fennel Seeds, Roasted Marshmallows, and Smoked Amber) What I was hoping for and what called to me: More and more I am falling deeply into the addictive properties of perfume oils (especially from Alkemia) and I think I lost all reason when I saw the late season (Autumn/Halloween) collection because before I knew it I was almost breaking my mouse hitting BUY IT NOW and a few days later running to the mailbox and ripping open my large package with childlike excitement (seriously Alkemia, you have me acting like a naughty spoiled child when I know I'm getting an order from you. Thank you for that.) This particular perfume was a "never tried before" purchase that called to me in all the right ways: roasted marshmallow, smoked amber, vanilla and my weakness- star anise). How could I resist? In the bottle/Applied: I'm still learning how to properly apply perfume oils and without a dropper or rollerball (too late did I see they were available all along, I just hit the BUY IT NOW without reading that option on the page) getting the right amount out of the bottle is not easy (I think I may have spilled a little too much on my wrist and tried rubbing the excess in my hair). Ah but as the old saying goes "some mistakes are worth making" because wow this is an ancient incantation in a bottle that might be innocent playful seasonal scent entertainment on someone else but on me this another suggestively wicked medley (that star anise and woodsmoke are my ultimate weaknesses) and I'm pretty sure if you've fallen already for Caveau Des Innocents you will swoon over All Hallow's Eve (October 2017). If the run soaked pears and deepening properties of coffee in Caveau Des Innocents didn't work the smokey and sweet qualities of All Hallow's Eve (October 2017) may be more for you. On me there is an unabashed flexing display of crushed cardamon, a sticky touch of smoked melted marshmallow and a teasing kiss of spice to keep me coming back and believe me I will be back next year for the next batch of this devious mix and purchasing another bottle of this seasonal treat very soon (ultime version with a rollerball). Words that come to mind: phantasmagorical, rites of the ancients, smokey spiced visit of All Hallow's Eves past, mischievous winds alkemia.etsy.com When I first beheld these stunners at Midnight Vision (midnightvision.etsy.com), James Horner's haunting masterpiece "Hymn To The Sea" was playing in my ear and I felt a distinct shiver as I sat in front of the screen. It's not every day I find a piece of ornamental art that has the combined arrangements of color and artistry that reminds me of a cinematic favorite (scoff if you will, Cameron pulled his many background details from Walter Lord's classic A Night To Remember and he even referenced current leading names on the marvel of engineering known as RMS Titanic to achieve applaudable accuracy). From the particular shimmering tones of blue that can only be found in the depths of the ocean to the familiar heart-like adornment (a hint of romance never hurts) and the extravagant floral motif that looked like it belonged on the sculpted wall moulding in the infamous dining room; I loved everything I saw and needed these earrings to grace my collection. Even from so far across the sea these jewels arrived in pristine condition but there was an understandable wait before that (it gave me ample time though to anticipate and browse further into this beautiful catalogue) and in the end they were worth every penny! I honestly can't stop staring at these earrings as they dance and flash in all different types of light with the most entrancing shades of blues and create a becoming silhouette between ear and neck (they are also very comfortable to wear). I will definitely shop at Midnight Vision again and recommend this shop to those searching for not only a special event accessory but a well deserved lavish gift that balances yesteryear with touches of romance.
midnightvision.etsy.com Having collected over the years a wide assortment of costume jewelry (mostly brand 1928 earrings and necklaces) nothing I have accumulated compares to the heirloom-like quality I have purchased from ETSY shops. The obvious inspirational flash and beautiful sparkles and glows are something that I'm thrilled to discover and hold up to the lamplights. It's hard to describe the feeling of elation and breathless wonder when I unwrap that perfect "something" and, so it goes with these next little treasures. Poring over my lists of "must haves" and "must seek next", I needed a blue set of earrings but not just any tone I wanted a royal saturated shade that you just don't see anymore. I was also just finishing up one or two titles on a personal favorite subject and decided an additional requirement was a certain inspired look when I found my earrings. Not only did I find the inspired look I have been hoping for but Wild Scarab Jewels has a little secret: the owner and jewelry artist is a published author who knows and appreciates the majesty of history and lost elegance of various bygone eras. It's always entertaining to see past the ink-smudged hands of writers into a rare glimpse of their own motivation or personal style and this shop offers all that and future temptations that I can't turn away from (especially the special limited edition Swarovski stones that you can't find anymore). It only took one glance (and it was two sets of jewelry in particular that stopped me and I could swear I heard graceful classical music playing) to quickly realize this styled shop catered to those who appreciate and covet the elegance of bygone eras as the owner has a special affinity for history, literature and a love for the theater and film. Her works of ornamental wearable art range “From Lady Macbeth to Lady Mary” and needless to say I couldn’t resist anymore once I saw a picture at the very bottom of the site of her displayed shelves of research with numerous various fashion history books and I highly recommend you have a look and stay awhile at Boheme Bijou because you won’t forget the experience, I know I won’t. So what were the jewelry listings from Boheme Bijou that initially sparked my ever vibrant imagination and had me swear I could hear “Valse Septembre" and "Hochzeitsreigen /The Wedding Dance Waltz” softly playing beside me (but then again that may have been my playlist on my phone but it any case) and had me create a special reminder marker in my browser that I revisited for days AND tempted me enough to finally join ETSY? Why TITANIC inspired pearl earrings and a classic lavaliere style necklace of course and here they are: My first purchase from Boheme Bijou was the TITANIC inspired pearl earrings that arrived within a few days and introduced me to the exceptional way ETSY shop owners treat their customers with personal thank you notes and I was even given a “thank you coupon” for my next order. The earrings themselves were beyond my expectations as they were unlike anything I have seen out in the modern set, they capture the flourishing architecture that was popular in the early 20th century and the pearls are the off shade of antique cream that compliments any occasion. I have worn them constantly since they have arrived. When I contacted the owner of this magnetic shop to see if she could make a single pair of earrings to match the dazzling necklace I just purchased from her FALL SALE, I had no idea how over the moon I would be. The attention to her customers before and the final reveal are a credit and are an example how customer service (she is such an absolute sweetheart) should be and these beautiful custom earrings and matching necklace perfectly embody originality and sophistication. They arrived only a few days after I ordered them and as soon as I saw them nestled together I knew I had to wear my LA BELLE ÉPOQUE (by ALKEMIA PERFUME) perfume when I showed off this collection as I felt these gorgeous glittering jewels echoing the past demanded my best and the riche powder floral scent that makes me feel in another place and time was a perfect additional accessory. If only it was entirely socially acceptable (in my world it is a must though), I would have also worn a picture hat with gloves to work all night as well but to spare my coworkers any awkward silent moments I just wore a classic lace blouse. Picture hat and gloves excluded this set was still an utter rave that night; the historical green color (so reminiscent of a personal beloved shade interestingly called “arsenic green” but was listed on the site as “fern”) with aged gold is just stunning to see (they glow in any light) and these new additions have quickly become favorites (I don’t want to take them off) and will be treasured for years to come. It only hit me as I was happily losing myself in looking at the delicate individual artistry with such fitting names as: "TATTERED ROSE", "DEADLY NIGHTSHADE", "PURPLE VELVET", "MISTY ROSE GARDEN", "ROAMIN IN THE GLOAMIN", "ALICE BLUE GOWN", "CRANBERRY SAUCE", "PURPLE TOADFLAX", "BURGUNDY SHIMMER", "LICHENS", "IRIS" (sorry I can assure you there there are many different pigment combinations (and lovely whimsical vintage items connected to nature and lush country gardens to be found) covering every spectrum of color but my eyes go straight to anything purple, rose related, green, pearl/gold themed or bluish-green), and "PEACOCK & PINK" etc that one selection (one frosted white flower pair) on the final page brought this directly to mind and I had to stop and smile: Being one of my favorite books (THE ACCURSED KINGS series is such an understated collection of works that I highly recommend to anyone who loves good old fashioned storytelling and quill dips of sinister adventure, tales of revenge, courtly intrigue and clever battings of "what if") I couldn't believe my luck of finding such similar styled earrings (can't find those in the states, believe me I've looked and asked) and I immediately started building up my lists of items I would like in the future (those earrings included) from this store, I acquired quite the basket of goodies to think further on and was slowly narrowing down my choices when I saw the deciding pieces I had to have (the accompanying descriptions were masterpieces of advertising and so inviting- as are every little summary within this shop). It’s so delightful what one can discover just by typing in a few words and my innocent search of “TITANIC ART” led me to the obscure tent of this curious shop that caters to those who are dying to locate that special “something” that is sure to give a tingle and raise an eyebrow of rare entertainment and amazement. Looking for a piece of historical art to spruce up your English Classroom? How about a genuine replica of Edgar Allan Poe’s obituary? That’s as quaint and dreary as you can get. Can’t decide on a welcoming item that screams your personality to guests, how about a framed copy of the infamous “From Hell” letter complete with carefully painted stains and so realistic you could believe it may have been plucked straight from the vaults of the British Government (or that the artist is a secret time traveler so he shant get buckled)? Or Al Capone’s processing papers from the Eastern State Penitentiary to add some charming cheer to your den where you have been keeping that lonely old Louisville Slugger. Wall Decor not your thing? No problem I see a freaky mounted copy of The FeeJee Mermaid that needs a good home, the trigger finger of John Wilkes Booth (or the mysterious “red headed man” from the Garretts’ barn, if you believe the rumors), an incredibly intricate 19th century Traveling Vampire Killer’s Kit or even a desiccated realistic Yeti hand (er that last one is fake right sir?) They are all (and many more fascinating items) listed in a catalogue to tantalize your most unpleasant interests in history or the supernormal that may otherwise gain you scared looks outside in polite society but at The Rag N Bone Emporium you will not be judged but only encouraged to indulge with these creepy and outstanding creations. This is indeed a nifty shop and I think anyone can appreciate the incredible levels of attention to detail that this shop owner displays in his work, the beyond entertaining short tales that accompany each item of his catalogue and I can’t thank him enough for taking on the task of creating a one of a kind multipiece display for me that speaks and beautifully haunts from every angle. I was searching for the perfect wall art that represented a story and meant something as an appropriate tribute to a subject that has fascinated me since I was given my first nonfiction book about the engineered Edwardian marvel. It is truly otherworldly as I stare at the comprehensive work from the fine points of the selection of the typed font on the labels to the preserved aged pocket watch stopped at the 2:20 and the gorgeous aging of the sheet music (complete with a penciled number “401” in the corner); it’s exactly what I have been hoping to grace my dream room for so long. Take a bow sir, it’s magnificent! From the remarkable aged sheets of music ("NEARER MY GOD TO THEE" and "SONGE D'AUTOMNE")- two hauntingly beautiful hymns that to this day are debated on which was played in the last moments on that cold April night, to the preserved "melted iceberg collected from C deck" in an etched perfume bottle and the stopped pocket watch (at 2:20). It's perfect. It is no surprise that this was the one fragrance I finished the entire sample vial (thank you so much Alkemia for allowing samples) in only a few days and even with a full sized bottle this will probably also be the first perfume I will need to reorder shortly because even as I am typing this review I'm just slathering myself with it (oh excuse me I'm not slathering, I'm using the justification in my head that "I'm testing it properly"). I have been continually reaching for this as the weather outside my windows mirrors my favorite type of novel. It's positively wicked, complex, transporting and too good to not share and deserves a special TREASURED/FEATURED label. Brava Alkemia! CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS- Listed Notes: (Labdanum, Vanilla Incense, Tobacco, Coffee, Rum Soaked Pears, Caramel) Combined Thoughts: I’m still experimenting with what I think I like and this I LOVE and want to live in the bottle! CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS is a sinful transporting delight that I want to return to again and again. It beckons with a clever aroma patchwork that I didn’t even know existed (or thought would work together) and calls to my side that loves gloom and alluring mystery but also unexpectedly reaches out and drags me down to unfamiliar levels of imagination with a fiendish seductive quality that I can’t (or want) to escape. The pear and yet almost salty caramel with vanilla are very dominant on me and the intoxicating coffee that comes out with the anise, tabac and incense make this fragrance wicked and just marvelous. I feel truly unique when I wear this and this is my ideal fragrance for the end of summer well into the colder months. What I was hoping for: This was another curious browsing within Alkemia's diverse library of perfumes (there is a fragrance for everyone to be found there). Reading the notes the Vanilla and Coffee along with soaked Pears and Caramel call out to me the most, hoping this is something I could wear for fall (never can have enough different scents for my favorite season). The description is also too much to ignore as well- a debauched underground club in 1905 Paris; here I come. In the vial: This is so complex and unlike anything I have ever encountered, this is an evilly brilliant masterpiece! *many minutes later of me just smelling the vial and saying YES! as well as fighting the urge to dump it on my head or buying 50 no a 105 full sized bottles or demanding a clawfoot tub of it made so I could bathe in it, I came back to my senses and tried to focus on the individual notes* I get the CARAMEL and a pressing of soaked PEARS and a spilling of the best dark COFFEE I have ever smelled. There is also a sweeping bow of STAR ANISE that I'm falling for in first time of my life. I should have tried this sooner! Applied: Welcome to CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS! If this was what the underground hub of elicit desires and wicked intentions smelled like: I WOULDN'T EVER WANT TO LEAVE OR SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN! *fighting the urge again to bathe in this* The caramel and coffee with pear really stand out on me and the anise pulls me deeper into this gloom filled amazing place. This is perfect for the end of summer well into fall and winter. As it dries the coffee and anise with warm caramel dipped pears comes out the most and I even smell the uncleaned spattered wood that is listed in the description. This is the ultimate transporting scent and completely unique. Exactly what I have been searching for. ECHOED ECTASY- Listed Notes: (Wild Strawberry, Ginger Flower, Artemisia, Melon and White Poppy) Combined Thoughts: I’m officially addicted to Alkemia Perfumes as I am among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars with ECHOED ECSTASY. This is what I imagine the lazy summer afternoon rendezvous between Gatsby and Daisy would have smelled like, pure carefree indulgent decadence and a splash of romantic expectation. Just perfect for this beautiful little fool. What I was hoping for: I was initially tempted by what others were saying about this summer fragrance release and decided to sample it first. I'm was hoping for a perfect summer blend for the sweltering summer weather we were experiencing, something light and refreshing would be great to find. In the vial: SPARKLING GINGER ALE with CITRUS and MELON. It has a decadent quality of a care-free celebration or rendezvous under a weeping willow on a breezy summer day. I have a feeling I'm going to love this. Applied: This is such a bright and uplifting fragrance, the bubbly ginger ale turns to light strawberry adorned champagne and swaying floral in the background. I absolutely love this and it reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in a cherished book. Words that come to mind: bright, playful, decadent, dreamlike, care-free, sparkling summer alkemia.etsy.com Alkemia Perfumes alkemia.etsy.com/ -This fragrance I am about to introduce has become something I find myself seeking out if I want to be pampered and perhaps escape reality for a time (joining the elite pantheon with CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS and LA BELLE ÉPOQUE- two other entrancing master works by Alkemia). The notes that combine in this heady perfume are ones that I honestly could just lose myself in the transporting quality of. It's aptly named as it is so intoxicating, (no, there is no actual alcohol content in the notes) it is just olfactory ambrosia that acts as a balm for stormy moods and I have become a devotee to this. Too good to not share and deserves a special label of FEATURED/TREASURED. Brava Alkemia! BACCHANTE- Listed Notes: (Blueberries, Oakmoss, Wild Ivy, Lavender, Tonka, and Forest Fungi) Combined Thoughts: BACCHANTE by Alkemia Perfumes is an olfactory masterpiece! It’s a perfect mysterious summer blend that surprises how much it can tickle the senses conjuring a lush jovial scene leaving you feeling regal but benevolent and finally above all has you begging to come back for more. True magic on my skin and I absolutely love everything about this heady perfume and won’t be found without it on my vanity dresser. Ladies if any description of scents or something happens to catch your eye in Alkemia’s extensive library of fragrances try it with a sample. Don’t be afraid to explore unfamiliar notes or fight the temptation to learn something about yourself. We all deserve a little something special and Alkemia knows exactly how to treat you right. What I was hoping for: When I picked this sample, I was looking for a scent for summer and the lavender note listed caught my full attention but I was still weary after years of the commercial scene with perfumes that I tended to shy away from notes that I thought would smell one way and disappoint (blueberry was one such note that never smelled real to me within any mass marketed selection). This was one of my first experiments with scent that I'm ashamed to say I didn't expect much from. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: In the vial: FRESH PICKED BLUEBERRIES and EARTH, you can't help but inhale. It's sublime! The effect is like smelling a bunch of hyacinths or lilacs for the first time (I even double checked to see if hyacinths were listed because it's almost floral) Applied: This is otherworldly and transports you to an indulgent level of realisation. It's amazing and something I never want to be without. I can't believe something like this exists...(*many minutes later of just closing my eyes and waxing poetic, I came back) I don't get the individual notes exactly it's just a harmonious union of season, emotion and imagination. Words that come to mind: transporting, heady, Woodland Goddess, lush, late spring to early fall, treasure *I purchased a full size of this and was surprised the effect was amplified within the bottle and it only got better within the months I forced myself to let allow it to age. Months later and it's still exquisite in every way as the notes come together and with my chemistry the earth element is slightly more detectable now (the other night I caught the underlying forest vegetation and I must comment that this unexpected favorite lasts on me for 12+ hours). The lavender that initially beckoned me to this perfume is there but blends beautifully with the blueberry. Please Alkemia never stop making this! alkemia.etsy.com Usually when someone asks me where I have been, I jokingly say "distracted by something shiny or something that smells good" and that is exactly why my book reviews have been very sporadic but in truth 2017 hasn't been the most ideal time for new releases for me sadly and being completely honest: I have been losing inspiration to write anything worth mentioning since the end of April (don't worry I will always have something to say and share about the RMS TITANIC (just ask my coworkers)). But I'm happy to say, I'm back and my imagination and mind is afire with thoughts on my new obsession? hobby? (can smelling things and sitting in front of 150 year old vanity breathing in the past be considered a pastime? I think it can). Introducing my inspiration and muse to write: perfume oils! (and ETSY.com) But first I need to say goodbye to an old friend. Saying goodbye to an old friend and the beginning of a new venture: I have been addicted to commercial perfumes for as long as I could reach my Baba's perfume shelf. I remember the beautiful bottles and glittering caps (I was even a magpie then) and I even kept a lone etched glass bottle and hoarded it like treasure for years (it reminded me of my Pap) until it disappeared one day. That little scent exploration then led to my early years of seeking out the sales tables at commercial retail locations and spending so much on a bunch of body splashes, eau de parfum and spritzes that I'm ashamed to say I grabbed as many as I could and hid for many years because they smelled what I thought at the time as unique and mature. Well those are being given away because in June of this year I stumbled onto ETSY and innocently searched for lilac, gingerbread and vanilla perfumes and my world has not been the same. I fully admit before I purchased anything I researched for a week on what perfume oils were and what was so special about them. I was immediately taken that perfume oils have such a complex and interesting history and the way you apply them just harkens back to a simpler forgotten era and you honestly feel so pampered and glamorous as you dab the fragrances on your wrists and pulse points (but I didn't know that at the moment when I stumbled onto these mood elixirs). What also thrilled me was there were so many different combinations and notes to explore. I still wasn't sure for some reason and reading the reviews I was overwhelmed but intrigued by all of the definitions (throw, sillage, aging, wet, dry etc.) it seemed something unreal and "puffed up" plus I worried what something would smell like. I mean I know what vanilla or hyacinths smell like right? I would imagine once you caught a whiff of a buttery rich but somehow nutty noted carved pumpkin the fragrance is pretty straight forward albeit a bit faded and altered in the eau de parfum but still recognizable (baby you haven't smelled nothing yet). I kept having all of these negative thoughts about trying oil in a vial versus a gold caped painted bottle. The price was too good to be true also, I just spent a pretty penny on a fruit rose perfume that unfortunately didn't resemble roses in the garden or summer berries at all and here I find a listing of the same amount 5ml for $12 or 11.95 (with slightly different variations but essentially the same notes). Impossible I thought, why the difference of cost? Ah the sneaky devils at the popular perfume companies have been hiding a big secret it would seem (or I never noticed the back of the bottle or cared to think past coating myself in formulations that I thought smelled nice) because after more research I found that alcohol is the primary ingredient in my pretty labeled commercial perfume bottles and the smaller vials of oil last longer even though some are smaller than 5mls (a tiny amount is needed versus just putting yourself in a cloud of chemicals) plus they are only comprised of natural pressings, mashing, remaining or what have you of real fruit or herbs. You are almost given a gift of a dying art with the perfume oils versus the showy retail alcohol and watered down faux fruits and factory processed swill. Pricing was certainly a factor to consider (and revealing the real truth on the back or under the bottle) but what about smelling like everyone else, I thought my precious chemical comprised mixtures made me different even though I was surprised three ladies on my floor at work were wearing something very close to my favorite spring perfume only weeks before. Again research came to my rescue and handed me the deciding card when I found that perfume oils react with your skin chemistry and change on one person to another. Fascinating! Still cautious but very excited at that point I wanted to sample these oils and found a small listing of highly recommended shops on ETSY and decided to purchase from a few. Below is my first experience with the alluring world of perfume oils (I made sure to first read the charming descriptions and go with what I thought I would like in the notes.) *Even though this was my initial purchase these were not the deciding scent(s) that had me say goodbye to faux over hyped plasticy perfume, that first honor went to SABRINA by SIBERIE PERFUMES but I will save that review for another day. Alkemia Perfumes alkemia.etsy.com Samples: EARL GREY TEA VANILLE AMOUR MADAME PEARL LETTRE D'AMOUR MEMORIAM CIDRE D'AUTOMNE Combined Thoughts: As always I'm late to the party but I can't believe my luck and reaction with being very pleased with my first introduction to the absolute unique personal experiences these oils can offer. I admit I was hesitant at first (purchasing something untried or just believing all of the positive reviews) but this 5 piece Perfume Sample Set was perfect for a cautious shopper like me and I can't decide what to buy a full bottle of first or ignore the temptation to try more. For this initial dipping of the toe into the world of perfume oil I sampled: Earl Grey Tea, Vanille Amour, Madame Pearl, Lettre d'Amour, Memoriam and a beautiful autumn selection that I hope comes back in stock. I loved how each of these prepared oils smelled different from the tiny vial to my skin and I'm told they will only get better with age (doesn't everything) One scent at a time: EARL GREY TEA (Listed Notes: Bergamot, Citrus and Black Tea) What I was hoping for: I love the smell of Earl Grey Tea and I was hoping to find that refined comforting tang and zest you get from a piping cup. Also I would like this for fall or late summer and for it to very herbal (like rubbing your hands over a long stalk of bergamot and getting that gorgeous faint spice back from it). If I could wear this to work that would be a plus. In the vial: I get LEMON and TEA, there is a burst of citrus and subdued herbal back note. Applied: That burst of citrus comes out but the herbal spice slowly makes an appearance, exactly what I have been searching for. Still it's more summer or spring-like than I was hoping. I really like it though...Giving it more time to blossom and dry on my skin the comforting scent I loved is very faint now after 10 minutes. I think it is my skin chemistry. Very disappointed but will let it age (hide away in a dark cool box for awhile so all the notes combine). Words that come to mind: refined, summer, muted VANILLE AMOUR (Listed Notes: Madagascar and Tahitian vanillas, Tonka, Cardamon, Ginger, and Grains of Paradise) What I'm hoping for: Reading all the positive reviews I'm hoping for chai and vanilla, something with a suggestion of warm drinks and cold weather In the vial: SPICE and APPLE but there is a creaminess. It's very nice and soothing Applied: Apple (reading that must be the Grains of Paradise) but not the typical powerful fruit burst, it's not tart but somewhat sweet and that spice is wonderful and I faintly detect resin. I don't get any strong vanilla oddly it's like a sophisticated spiced apple cookie. I need a bottle of this! Words that come to mind: fall, comforting, dusting, delicate spice MADAME PEARL (Listed Notes: White Tea Leaves, Bone China, Vanilla Pods, White Pepper) What I'm hoping for: Again going by reviews but I would hope for vanilla tea and some pepper. Maybe even a little alluring mystery mixed in. In the vial: LEMON, TEA and PEPPER there is a elegant vanilla powder in the background Applied: the powdery lemon is center stage but is very pleasant with the elegant tea note. The pepper really comes out on my skin and I get another kind of warm note with the vanilla. I love this! Words that come to mind: hot summer nights, flickering gaslight, different LETTRE D'AMOUR (Listed Notes: Star Jasmine, Neroli, White Roses, Sweet White Amber, Perfumed Ink) What I'm hoping for: I can't honestly say I know what jasmine smells like and I'm somewhat leery of amber (thanks to years of being bombarded with "amber" sprays/concoctions from local mall shops, you know the one) but the perfumed ink sounds like something I need to know about. In the vial: SOAP and POWDER and there is a sweetness *Applied: the soap note was extremely dominant and I decided to let this one age for two weeks as they suggested. Coming back much better, the soap is there (reading that must be the jasmine) but the lovely powder and light sweetness and the ink I can detect. It really is a complex but pretty scent (perhaps a touch too youthful for me), not sure I would buy a full bottle but it something I will use for special occasions. Words that come to mind: romantic, pretty, vintage, spring, powdery soap MEMORIAM (Listed Notes: Dark Red Roses, Smoke and Ashes) What I'm hoping to find: something floral but deep In the vial: WOOD ASH and CANDLE SMOKE there are the roses and it twines beautifully with the ash Applied: I don't know how it is possible but this is beautifully strange in the best way, it's just a deep solemn scent that would be impossible to find in the mainstream. As it dries, it's like lighting a prayer votive in the church and there are roses around you as you place them down for someone special. I will be saving this vial for only certain days of remembrance and reflection Words that come to mind: respectful, winter, fall, November, January, beloved special *CIDRE D'AUTOMNE (Listed Notes: Fall Apples and Autumnal Spices) (*was a generous bonus sample Alkemia tossed in) With their shop you get an extra vial of your choice (one of two restrictions though but you can see those on the main page) with the sample set of 5 and 2 extra samples if you purchase the 5ml bottles and all with amazing customer service! What I am hoping for: fresh pressed and stirred apple cider In the vial: Exactly as promised. Home brewed goodness! Applied: This one surprised it starts out spice and crisp ripe apples then goes buttery on me. It goes from apple cider to flaky pie. Hopefully this one comes back into their fall catalogue, it's marvelous.
