" 'What might have been' is always better than what is." In true Todd fashion, The Murder Stone compounds racing emotions with searches for absolution and is set during WWI. The atmosphere along with the descriptions of psychological anguish and war are some of the best you will find in this genre but unfortunately the serious mystery and supposed suspense in this stand alone novel are overwhelmed by a need for an awkwardly presented romance that never seems real. The characters were also flat with only one I actually wanted to read more about. Admitting these unfortunate negatives has me wondering if I should have just picked up a classic Gothic novel off of my shelves because everything in The Murder Stone has all been done before. It did give a spirited effort to be an homage to some of the more recognizable cornerstones of the dark twisted sides of the library shelves but it was just too much of a good thing (Wings of Fire (Inspector Ian Rutledge, #2)- another novel by this creative mother and son writing duo was a fantastic homage to some of the greats of late 18th century to early 20th century Gothic writing, you cared about the characters and it had the right amount of mystery and shadowy family secrets to pull you deeper into the pages until the final dark inquiry). Still the premise of The Murder Stone was hard to ignore and the opening chapters and final reveal contained brilliant flickers of what I was anticipating to see (always can appreciate a wicked villain) within this book but the overabundance of predictable secrets, repetitive natures, random blurted out confessions and endless parade of walk-in scene characters (or convenient exits) all felt like a badly acted play with stunning scenery and attention to history in the back ground to keep you entertained and leaving with a few positive words to share later. -purchased and read on kindle -EGP/September 2017 Anyone who knows me (or sits by me long enough) is already acquainted with something I dare to imagine will be what I dearly hope someday to become a reality and a journey I will never forget- traveling to the UK and walking in the steps of history (and inspired literature) that has enchanted me since I was a child. In the meantime though my mind may be: wandering up the steep paths to the Glastonbury Tor or planning ahead to trek the hills to Haworth, Top Withens, Ponden Hall and sitting down and becoming bewitched body and soul at Chatsworth House and also scouring the beaches and cliffs of Lyme Regis for forgotten fossils, lingering in the shadowed lanes where Saucy Jack once hunted, touring the now quiet historic battlefields and towers as the crow (or raven) flies and of course standing dressed to the nines (large picture hat with my cache of pearls included) in The White Swan Hotel's Olympic Restaurant (to name but only a few items on my long list of anticipated excursions) but some part of me still needs to be grounded in this current place and time unfortunately. That part nevertheless requires the vintage touch in my everyday life also you see and another search on ETSY has brought me just that with another discovery of a hidden treasure: English Vintage Design What caught my immediate attention (besides the beyond irresistible banner that called out home to my wandering soul) was the unique one of a kind selection that this charming shop offered with hand painted swirls and dabs of shades of every color in nature but it also held a special surprise for this classic book collector in the end. It only hit me as I was happily losing myself in looking at the delicate individual artistry with such fitting names as: "TATTERED ROSE", "DEADLY NIGHTSHADE", "PURPLE VELVET", "MISTY ROSE GARDEN", "ROAMIN IN THE GLOAMIN", "ALICE BLUE GOWN", "CRANBERRY SAUCE", "PURPLE TOADFLAX", "BURGUNDY SHIMMER", "LICHENS", "IRIS" (sorry I can assure you there there are many different pigment combinations (and lovely whimsical vintage items connected to nature and lush country gardens to be found) covering every spectrum of color but my eyes go straight to anything purple, rose related, green, pearl/gold themed or bluish-green), and "PEACOCK & PINK" etc that one selection (one frosted white flower pair) on the final page brought this directly to mind and I had to stop and smile: Being one of my favorite books (THE ACCURSED KINGS series is such an understated collection of works that I highly recommend to anyone who loves good old fashioned storytelling and quill dips of sinister adventure, tales of revenge, courtly intrigue and clever battings of "what if") I couldn't believe my luck of finding such similar styled earrings (can't find those in the states, believe me I've looked and asked) and I immediately started building up my lists of items I would like in the future (those earrings included) from this store, I acquired quite the basket of goodies to think further on and was slowly narrowing down my choices when I saw the deciding pieces I had to have (the accompanying descriptions were masterpieces of advertising and so inviting- as are every little summary within this shop). Here are my new treasures to share: Two of my favorite seasons beautifully encompassed in ornamental jewellery form (the above pictures don't do these exquisite fashioned pieces justice) to have with me everyday and custom made earrings to match any choice and to add a much needed class and delicate grace to my earring wardrobe (they are so dainty and pretty- perfect for any occasion). In addition to all those positives, the owner was an absolute gem to work with on this order and I would like to thank her for sharing her finesse with a brush and eye for color and detail with the world, I will definitely be back at this charming shop soon. Not even a week later I saw these sets of earrings and couldn't resist, they arrived packaged with such care and attention, are so light and just lovely (unbelievably comfortable to wear that at times I forget I have them on). The hand painting of the flowers are so beautifully done that they honestly look they they have been gathered from some enchanted garden. Needless to say, I don't want to take them off and I now must have a set from every unique color listing from this shop. Absolutely love them! englishvintagedesign.etsy.com I saw somewhere that someone compared ETSY to the ultimate craft fair or online festival of unique arts, where you can find practically anything and did I find a dark wonder of macabre, weird and fantastic with stumbling across The Rag N Bone Emporium (theragnboneemporium.etsy.com). It’s so delightful what one can discover just by typing in a few words and my innocent search of “TITANIC ART” led me to the obscure tent of this curious shop that caters to those who are dying to locate that special “something” that is sure to give a tingle and raise an eyebrow of rare entertainment and amazement. Looking for a piece of historical art to spruce up your English Classroom? How about a genuine replica of Edgar Allan Poe’s obituary? That’s as quaint and dreary as you can get. Can’t decide on a welcoming item that screams your personality to guests, how about a framed copy of the infamous “From Hell” letter complete with carefully painted stains and so realistic you could believe it may have been plucked straight from the vaults of the British Government (or that the artist is a secret time traveler so he shant get buckled)? Or Al Capone’s processing papers from the Eastern State Penitentiary to add some charming cheer to your den where you have been keeping that lonely old Louisville Slugger. Wall Decor not your thing? No problem I see a freaky mounted copy of The FeeJee Mermaid that needs a good home, the trigger finger of John Wilkes Booth (or the mysterious “red headed man” from the Garretts’ barn, if you believe the rumors), an incredibly intricate 19th century Traveling Vampire Killer’s Kit or even a desiccated realistic Yeti hand (er that last one is fake right sir?) They are all (and many more fascinating items) listed in a catalogue to tantalize your most unpleasant interests in history or the supernormal that may otherwise gain you scared looks outside in polite society but at The Rag N Bone Emporium you will not be judged but only encouraged to indulge with these creepy and outstanding creations. This is indeed a nifty shop and I think anyone can appreciate the incredible levels of attention to detail that this shop owner displays in his work, the beyond entertaining short tales that accompany each item of his catalogue and I can’t thank him enough for taking on the task of creating a one of a kind multipiece display for me that speaks and beautifully haunts from every angle. I was searching for the perfect wall art that represented a story and meant something as an appropriate tribute to a subject that has fascinated me since I was given my first nonfiction book about the engineered Edwardian marvel. It is truly otherworldly as I stare at the comprehensive work from the fine points of the selection of the typed font on the labels to the preserved aged pocket watch stopped at the 2:20 and the gorgeous aging of the sheet music (complete with a penciled number “401” in the corner); it’s exactly what I have been hoping to grace my dream room for so long. Take a bow sir, it’s magnificent! From the remarkable aged sheets of music ("NEARER MY GOD TO THEE" and "SONGE D'AUTOMNE")- two hauntingly beautiful hymns that to this day are debated on which was played in the last moments on that cold April night, to the preserved "melted iceberg collected from C deck" in an etched perfume bottle and the stopped pocket watch (at 2:20). It's perfect. The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra by Helen Rappaport9/9/2017
“They had no idea of the ugly side of life” Depending on what the reader is searching for, you may find a twinkle or brilliant beam of interest and educational distraction with picking up The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra. For me it almost ended up as a “no thank you” type of work when the author’s personal negative views broke the string of opening events but I still wished to read this title as the promised subjects deserved my patience (the story of the four sisters have always been the “the” sad real life painted fairy tale that has captivated me since childhood and I’ve always felt some kind of special understanding with introverted personalities). In a way I’m happy I stayed and took the time to read this book but I think I will search out other titles to learn more as I can’t say I didn’t want to apologize to historic individuals as I read the side comments and felt the obvious distaste of the author at certain points in the pages. I was also surprised but also disappointed this work was very drawn out in the beginning chapters, somewhat repetitive with the available information and was more of a scrapbook of memories of the Grand Duchesses with much flipping back and forth of dates and events. Modern interpretation of past events can be very tricky to handle and unfortunately The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra held too much of others opinions and too little of the words of the sisters or allowed a final impression of their individual personalities for this interested reader. * I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra *Also published under: Four Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Romanov Grand Duchesses (The Romanov Sisters, #2) by Helen Rappaport Also in this non-fiction collection: The Last Days of the Romanovs: Tragedy at Ekaterinburg (The Romanov Sisters, #1) by Helen Rappaport The Race to Save the Romanovs (The Romanov Sisters) by Helen Rappaport -EGP/August 2017 Alkemia Perfumes alkemia.etsy.com/ -This next fragrance has quickly found a special place in my secret dark little heart as this perfume is just a sinful patchwork that pulls me into depths of shadowy niches of imagination and doesn't let me go. It is no surprise that this was the one fragrance I finished the entire sample vial (thank you so much Alkemia for allowing samples) in only a few days and even with a full sized bottle this will probably also be the first perfume I will need to reorder shortly because even as I am typing this review I'm just slathering myself with it (oh excuse me I'm not slathering, I'm using the justification in my head that "I'm testing it properly"). I have been continually reaching for this as the weather outside my windows mirrors my favorite type of novel. It's positively wicked, complex, transporting and too good to not share and deserves a special TREASURED/FEATURED label. Brava Alkemia! CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS- Listed Notes: (Labdanum, Vanilla Incense, Tobacco, Coffee, Rum Soaked Pears, Caramel) Combined Thoughts: I’m still experimenting with what I think I like and this I LOVE and want to live in the bottle! CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS is a sinful transporting delight that I want to return to again and again. It beckons with a clever aroma patchwork that I didn’t even know existed (or thought would work together) and calls to my side that loves gloom and alluring mystery but also unexpectedly reaches out and drags me down to unfamiliar levels of imagination with a fiendish seductive quality that I can’t (or want) to escape. The pear and yet almost salty caramel with vanilla are very dominant on me and the intoxicating coffee that comes out with the anise, tabac and incense make this fragrance wicked and just marvelous. I feel truly unique when I wear this and this is my ideal fragrance for the end of summer well into the colder months. What I was hoping for: This was another curious browsing within Alkemia's diverse library of perfumes (there is a fragrance for everyone to be found there). Reading the notes the Vanilla and Coffee along with soaked Pears and Caramel call out to me the most, hoping this is something I could wear for fall (never can have enough different scents for my favorite season). The description is also too much to ignore as well- a debauched underground club in 1905 Paris; here I come. In the vial: This is so complex and unlike anything I have ever encountered, this is an evilly brilliant masterpiece! *many minutes later of me just smelling the vial and saying YES! as well as fighting the urge to dump it on my head or buying 50 no a 105 full sized bottles or demanding a clawfoot tub of it made so I could bathe in it, I came back to my senses and tried to focus on the individual notes* I get the CARAMEL and a pressing of soaked PEARS and a spilling of the best dark COFFEE I have ever smelled. There is also a sweeping bow of STAR ANISE that I'm falling for in first time of my life. I should have tried this sooner! Applied: Welcome to CAVEAU DES INNOCENTS! If this was what the underground hub of elicit desires and wicked intentions smelled like: I WOULDN'T EVER WANT TO LEAVE OR SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN! *fighting the urge again to bathe in this* The caramel and coffee with pear really stand out on me and the anise pulls me deeper into this gloom filled amazing place. This is perfect for the end of summer well into fall and winter. As it dries the coffee and anise with warm caramel dipped pears comes out the most and I even smell the uncleaned spattered wood that is listed in the description. This is the ultimate transporting scent and completely unique. Exactly what I have been searching for. Words that come to mind: enrapturing gloom, unique mystery, end of summer to spring, wickedly marvelous and fiendish in every perfect way alkemia.etsy.com Sibérie Perfumes siberieperfumes.etsy.com/ (the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site) siberieperfume.indiemade.com/content/artisan-perfume-made-love-magic-alchemy -This early fall gift to myself is one fragrance I admittedly couldn't put down once I opened the securely prepared parcel which arrived nary a spill even from such a long distance (Canada). It came nestled along with the jewel that is BOLEYN and has been one fragrance that I crave anytime I want a guilt-free scent treat. Too good not to share and deserves a special FEATURED/TREASURED label. Brava Sibérie! MADAME CITROUILLE- Listed Notes: (Pumpkin, Chocolate Drizzle, Gingerbread Spice) Combined Thoughts: MADAME CITROUILLE by Sibérie Perfumes is indeed a perfect name for this olfactory confection because this is one spicy and sweet lady who knows exactly how to turn men's heads and temp anyone for just one more sniff with her delectable notes. You may be surprised who stops and compliments when you show this perfume off. Absolutely delicious with an easy comparison to pumpkin chocolate chip spice cookies from your favorite specialty bakery. So good and a treat for Fall (or anytime you get a craving for guilt-free indulgences)! What I was hoping for: After entering into the alluring world of perfume oils and falling under the spell of SABRINA (also by Sibérie), I couldn't resist that this fragrance had more gourmand notes and hoping my luck wouldn't run out, I put in an order and crossed my fingers for another prized potion of scent. In the bottle: MELTED CHOCOLATE with PUMPKIN and delectable GINGERBREAD with a dusting of CINNAMON. Amazing exactly as promised. I can't wait to put this one on. Applied: It's so strangely fantastic how chemistry affects oils because this turns to the most delicious smelling buttery cookies on me (the spices really stand out). A scent I must take to the waiting public and see the effect as I smell exactly like a seasonal specialty listing from a little well known bakery in my area and everyone will recognize the aroma but they will not know it is me as I walk past. As it dries the pumpkin seems to fade more (but that seems to happen with pumpkin scents for me sadly or they go totally waxy on me) but it's still there and the chocolate and gingerbread make up for the slight disappearing act of this lady. I absolutely love this! Words that come to mind: delicious, holiday, spicy and gourmand comfort siberieperfumes.etsy.com/ *(the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site and fall is right around the corner a perfect time to get your scarves and wraps prepared with magical aromas that stay with you and become a part of you or stock up and perfectly age some scents for next spring and summer (remember the longer they sit the better) Don't forget about samples: this shop also generously allows small vials of different listed perfumes that range from Arthurian Legend, Bohemian, Gothic inspired to Historical and beyond along with a full bottle order. No question is considered silly and she was very helpful in regards to my final decision to sample and purchase this fragrance and another I had been wondering about (and those two have become treasured favorites). Always appreciate to find excellent customer service and Alkemia has one of the best. Too good not to share and deserves a special FEATURED/TREASURED label. Brava Alkemia! ECHOED ECTASY- Listed Notes: (Wild Strawberry, Ginger Flower, Artemisia, Melon and White Poppy) Combined Thoughts: I’m officially addicted to Alkemia Perfumes as I am among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars with ECHOED ECSTASY. This is what I imagine the lazy summer afternoon rendezvous between Gatsby and Daisy would have smelled like, pure carefree indulgent decadence and a splash of romantic expectation. Just perfect for this beautiful little fool. What I was hoping for: I was initially tempted by what others were saying about this summer fragrance release and decided to sample it first. I'm was hoping for a perfect summer blend for the sweltering summer weather we were experiencing, something light and refreshing would be great to find. In the vial: SPARKLING GINGER ALE with CITRUS and MELON. It has a decadent quality of a care-free celebration or rendezvous under a weeping willow on a breezy summer day. I have a feeling I'm going to love this. Applied: This is such a bright and uplifting fragrance, the bubbly ginger ale turns to light strawberry adorned champagne and swaying floral in the background. I absolutely love this and it reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in a cherished book. Words that come to mind: bright, playful, decadent, dreamlike, care-free, sparkling summer alkemia.etsy.com Sibérie Perfumes siberieperfumes.etsy.com/ (the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site) siberieperfume.indiemade.com/content/artisan-perfume-made-love-magic-alchemy -This selection is one that first called to me with a magnetic name and quickly became one that had me asking "where have you been all my life?" with one of the listed notes (PATCHOULI). This is another unique perfume that proved to me the importance of exploring unfamiliar realms of scent (you never know what you may like or know when you will be reminded of something special you lost). Too good to not share and deserves a special label of TREASURED/FEATURED. Brava Sibérie! BOLEYN- Listed Notes: (Dark Cocoa, Caramel, Patchouli, French Vanilla, Myrrh, Labdanum, Frankincense) Combined Thoughts: BOLEYN by Sibérie Perfumes truly aims to win your favor and for me she did just that with an elegant spicy throw that lasted an impressive 12+ hours. This is one fragrance that has me feeling confident, nostalgic and I can't hide a secret little smile when I walk into a room. A real complex blend that has quickly become a personal favorite. Don't be afraid of any unfamiliar notes in this regal beauty, this perfume displays the best of the unique described scents and depending on the curious the dark cocoa, caramel, vanilla with patchouli and lingering whispers of amber laced resins all weaves the most irresistible spell from the lost past. Overall, a strangely beautiful ode to a maligned figure of history and fascinating legends that still inspires and rules the world's imagination. What drew me and what I was hoping for: While quickly realising that on ETSY you can find practically anything, one afternoon I thought I would press my luck and try to search for historical themed perfumes, BOLEYN was among the top results. Reading the listed notes I became even more convinced I needed to try this as one of the notes was PATCHOULI a mysterious word that I had come across in numerous types of fiction and one in particular (oddly enough titled The Memory Of Scent) described this note in such passionate verse that I admit I have been dying to find an opportunity to try this scent ever since reading those pages. The dark cocoa, caramel, french vanilla and resins were just an added bonus along of course with anything associated to Anne Boleyn (one of my favorite names to read about). So with all that in mind when I made my first order on ETSY from this shop I made sure I asked if I could try a sample of BOLEYN (I was slightly cautious still having one horribly disappointing experience with another popular indie perfume shop just that week so I didn't order a full bottle at that moment, don't worry it wasn't SIBERIE or ALKEMIA and to be respectful to difference of opinion I will not reveal the name or mention it again). In the vial: One of the most gorgeous complex SPICE smells I have ever encountered, I can clearly detect the luscious DARK COCOA dusting with CARAMEL. There is this different but very comforting note I am getting that is making me smile. All good signs. Applied: Oh there is that alluring and comforting note again now and it really likes my skin, what is that? I know I have smelled this before and twines so elegantly with the sweeter notes. This perfume is very suggestive and it's easy to imagine Anne Boleyn confidently walking into a private chapel (brought to mind by the familiar frankincense and myrrh) on a grey overcast autumn day and kneeling amongst the dusty books and dirt collected on the stone floor that's it, it's antiqued earth, like exploring old houses or one of my favorite childhood hiding spots. It's a marvelous refined spicy almost smoky earthy scent that is beautifully matched with the dark cocoa, caramel and french vanilla. I love this, where has this been all my life? This is truly unique with a regal quality of yesteryear and we shall never be apart again. Words that come to mind: Autumn Queen, regal spice, confident, mystery, aloof siberieperfumes.etsy.com/ *(the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site and fall is right around the corner a perfect time to get your scarves and wraps prepared with magical aromas that stay with you and become a part of you or stock up and perfectly age some scents for next spring and summer (remember the longer they sit the better) Don't forget about samples: this shop also generously allows small vials of different listed perfumes that range from medieval, bohemian, gothic inspired to historical and beyond along with a full bottle order. The notes that combine in this heady perfume are ones that I honestly could just lose myself in the transporting quality of. It's aptly named as it is so intoxicating, (no, there is no actual alcohol content in the notes) it is just olfactory ambrosia that acts as a balm for stormy moods and I have become a devotee to this. Too good to not share and deserves a special label of FEATURED/TREASURED. Brava Alkemia! BACCHANTE- Listed Notes: (Blueberries, Oakmoss, Wild Ivy, Lavender, Tonka, and Forest Fungi) Combined Thoughts: BACCHANTE by Alkemia Perfumes is an olfactory masterpiece! It’s a perfect mysterious summer blend that surprises how much it can tickle the senses conjuring a lush jovial scene leaving you feeling regal but benevolent and finally above all has you begging to come back for more. True magic on my skin and I absolutely love everything about this heady perfume and won’t be found without it on my vanity dresser. Ladies if any description of scents or something happens to catch your eye in Alkemia’s extensive library of fragrances try it with a sample. Don’t be afraid to explore unfamiliar notes or fight the temptation to learn something about yourself. We all deserve a little something special and Alkemia knows exactly how to treat you right. What I was hoping for: When I picked this sample, I was looking for a scent for summer and the lavender note listed caught my full attention but I was still weary after years of the commercial scene with perfumes that I tended to shy away from notes that I thought would smell one way and disappoint (blueberry was one such note that never smelled real to me within any mass marketed selection). This was one of my first experiments with scent that I'm ashamed to say I didn't expect much from. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: In the vial: FRESH PICKED BLUEBERRIES and EARTH, you can't help but inhale. It's sublime! The effect is like smelling a bunch of hyacinths or lilacs for the first time (I even double checked to see if hyacinths were listed because it's almost floral) Applied: This is otherworldly and transports you to an indulgent level of realisation. It's amazing and something I never want to be without. I can't believe something like this exists...(*many minutes later of just closing my eyes and waxing poetic, I came back) I don't get the individual notes exactly it's just a harmonious union of season, emotion and imagination. Words that come to mind: transporting, heady, Woodland Goddess, lush, late spring to early fall, treasure *I purchased a full size of this and was surprised the effect was amplified within the bottle and it only got better within the months I forced myself to let allow it to age. Months later and it's still exquisite in every way as the notes come together and with my chemistry the earth element is slightly more detectable now (the other night I caught the underlying forest vegetation and I must comment that this unexpected favorite lasts on me for 12+ hours). The lavender that initially beckoned me to this perfume is there but blends beautifully with the blueberry. Please Alkemia never stop making this! alkemia.etsy.com A turn of the century desperate pursuit for answers with cameos of the titans of medical and scientific discovery Deadly Cure is the second novel I have read from this author and I believe I enjoyed the countdown mystery with cameos of the titans of medical and scientific discovery in this book a great deal more than The Anatomy of Deception. Perhaps it was the setting or the premise involving a desperate race for answers that passed through the dying opulence of the 19th century and the filthy avenues of changing humanity that grabbed my imagination the most. The two novels are similar in messages but also share writing that brings me back for another chapter. Whatever the winning reason, Mr. Goldstone is indeed a master at presenting and organizing facts and I was thrilled as I began to follow the opening lines in this title that he once more nudges the reader to explore names of individuals from a bygone era on their own instead of breaking into the story with a long forced biography about a referenced name. I would recommend Deadly Cure just for that element alone of inviting the curious to investigate further long after the turn of the final page (especially about the dawning of the study of forensics). Sadly with all the positives of ambiance and little details that delighted and captivated in Deadly Cure I was somewhat disenchanted with quite a few of the characters (or the noticeable gaps in their personal histories that were never mentioned after they fulfilled their intended purposes in the story) and the overly dramatic scenes that just didn’t fit comfortably in comparison to the beginning passages. It was one later awkward ridiculous chapter in general that really disappointed me and after that part the action overthrew the intriguing mystery to create a four part ending that seemed there for modern tastes. True it wasn’t what I expecting but I still wish there would have been more subtlety and off scene acts instead but those types of negatives may not bother another reader. In any case the last important encouraging point I must note (that overbalanced the above for me) was the ultimate resolution to the mystery which was perfect and completely believable. Overall, this is one story that keeps you guessing, thinking about the future and continually secretly glancing over at your own medicine cupboard. *I would like to thank NetGalley and Pegasus Books for the opportunity to read and enjoy Deadly Cure -Title expected to be released: November 7, 2017- -EGP/July 2017 Sibérie Perfumes sibérieperfumes.etsy.com/ (the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site) siberieperfume.indiemade.com/content/artisan-perfume-made-love-magic-alchemy BETTINA BOO- Listed Notes: (Dark Cherry, Peach, Jasmine, Lavender, Musk, Powder) *I received this sample vial along with my first purchase and am seriously considering a full bottle of it joining my vanity Combined Thoughts: BETTINA BOO compliments any gal who has established her own style and is ready to show the world what she can do. Don’t be fooled with the fruit notes listed, this is one perfume that has a sweet playful side but also a glamorous quality all her own that for me I wish I found much earlier. Being a recent convert from the over packed commercial alcohol faux scent sale tables I can’t help but somewhat compare this fragrance to a certain popular body splash that I was obsessed with in my foolish younger days. If only I had BETTINA BOO back then (or even knew something like this even existed), it’s just a lovely late spring to summer blend that displays vivacious turns but also has a vintage quality that amps this scent cocktail up to a refined class that is sure to be noticed and appreciated by those who would rather have grace and a little added mature sophistication versus commercial induced headaches or smelling like every other woman in the room. In the bottle: PEACH and FLORAL with a delicate hint of POWDER Applied: This takes me right back to a popular body splash (you know the one- gold applicator purple bottle hydrangeas on the label) I was addicted to years ago but there the comparison stops because after awhile as this playful mosaic of fruit and floral blossoms (a little goes a long way) it becomes a powdery lady for the night, standing just enough out to get noticed but giving it a personal becoming quality that you can't forget or will find on anyone else. It then swirls with the composed vanilla which depending on your skin chemistry adds a little dulcet or spice back to the homey and woody herbal of the lavender. For me the marshmallow only greets me after I wake up as I use this winning blend to relax and drift off to sleep. Must be some unlisted magic thrown in this olfactory elixir as I have pleasant vivid dreams with this lovely fragrance which I greatly appreciate. I know I’m to let these oils rest (believe me they deserve it and will only get better with age) but right out of the vial they were magical in some way and one even brought tears to my eyes with comforting nostalgia and memories of a dearly missed loved one. That was a special surprise that I truly appreciate. I recommend those nervous about trying perfume oils to give the sample piece set a wave of the wrist, I don’t think you will be disappointed. One scent at a time: PUMPKIN STRUMPET (Listed Notes: Sugar, Pumpkins, Madagascar Vanilla, Cinnamon, Ginger & Clove) What I was hoping for: I'll admit the catchy name caught my attention at first (seriously who doesn't want to go around and secretly hope someone asks "what are your wearing?") and after I stopped giggling, I prepared myself for a familiar favorite with a naughty spicy twist. In the vial: *this one needed a little more aging (placed in a cool dark box to combine all of the notes) as this strumpet was surprisingly shy and needed time, I tested the vial once in May and July and got only the PUMPKIN, SUGAR and VANILLA with the faintest wisp of my precious fall SPICES. It is true what they say about these oils getting better as they sit and last week in September I decided it was long enough and took her out for the night. Applied: Again this one surprised me as I needed to dab quite a bit on and as I was getting ready to go out the door, I almost couldn't detect it and added more thinking it was just something that needed done. It is a delicious confection that seems to melt on my skin but it also called to mind a more subdued russet lady rather than a spicy lady of the evening which somewhat disappointed me as I could faintly detect it throughout the night. Not what I was expecting but apparently this strumpet still likes to plays tricks as it dried and the notes morphed from one dessert to another on me and I could swear I smelled pumpkin cheesecake after a few hours and it did depart with the loveliest vanilla as the final note. Very odd how chemistry affects the combined notes and this fragrance might be the one I need a "fixative" oil (that prolongs the longevity of the scent layered on top). I wish Alkemia had this scent in an ULTIME version (one that lasts longer on those whose chemistry "gobbles" up scent which seems to happens with me for pumpkin fragrances) because I would purchase a full bottle (who doesn't want to smell pumpkin cheesecake this time of year?) UPDATE: 17th-18th of September- It seems this autumn bawd heard me speaking ill of her and decided to put on the ultimate metamorphosing dessert scent show that night to dispel any past disappointment as I could clearly detect every promised note and the confections changed from slices of pumpkin cheesecake to spice dusted pumpkin roll and that next morning to amazing pumpkin gobs filled with creamy vanilla icing. No faint wisps this time but only like sitting next to a fall party dessert tray all night. That stunt proved to me the importance of aging and patience with perfume oils (it took almost 4 months) and I'm now convinced (and in love) in the power of this sassy pumpkin scent potion. I will be purchasing a full bottle before winter (and storing it away properly) with all apologies to those who have fallen already for this perfume. You were right! Curious Discovery (what perfume performs well with another): HONEYCAKES FOR HARVEST MOON (*another future full bottle purchase and review) & PUMPKIN STRUMPET-try it, they were made for one another *AU LAIT & PUMPKIN STRUMPET *another match made in gourmand heaven Words that come to mind: sweet fall confections, spicy trickster, holiday, heavenly temptations *BACCHANTE: (Listed Notes: Blueberries, Oakmoss, Wild Ivy, Lavender, Tonka and Forest Fungi -PERFUME DESERVES TO BE SHOWCASED AND PURCHASED IN FULL AMOUNT/BOTTLE Feature Review to follow, it' a masterpiece!- TEMPTATION: Listed Notes: (Crème de Violet Macarons with White Chocolate Ganash) What I'm hoping for: I'm still working through different unfamiliar scent combinations and VIOLET is one I hope I love because of the fascinating history associated with the scent: Queen Anne Boleyn and Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna (Romanov) were both said to have strongly favored this note above all others. The white chocolate is just a bonus as well as the macarons. In the vial: sweet but edible BABY POWDER (reading that must be the VIOLETS) and it's very comforting and familiar. Applied: the VIOLET is dominant on me but I can still detect the CHOCOLATE. This is an innocent feminine scent that has a beautiful ethereal vintage quality to it. I like this, not sure I would want a full bottle but I definitely use this vial on special dates. Words that come to mind: vintage, winter, cusp of spring, kindness, innocence AU LAIT: Listed Notes: (Warm Creamy Milk, Lait Sucre, and a Drop of Honey) What I'm hoping for: I wanted to sample this fragrance as I read that it can be layered with PUMPKIN STRUMPET to create a more sophisticated scent that is a sure winner for the season and company. Going strictly by reviews plus maybe this could be used for sleep (if it indeed smells like warm milk) In the vial: WARM TOAST or BUTTERED FROM SCRATCH FRESH BAKED BREAD, very cozy and familiar. Wow had did they capture that scent? Applied: This is such a comforting humble scent, I can see why others are saying it would go great with PUMPKIN STRUMPET (one deserves the other). Letting it dry, it becomes straight MELTED BUTTER on me which I love but I think this and PUMPKIN STRUMPET would work best for me in an oil warmer for a room (that place I wouldn't want to leave ever) versus on my skin. Words that come to mind: home, warmth, snowflakes, warm hugs, butter, empty chair LA BELLE ÉPOQUE: Listed Notes: (Jasmine Sambac, Tuberose, Iris, Rose, and Lily of the Valley blended with Plum, Apricot, Tahitian Vanilla, Blonde Amber, Bitter Almond, Oakmoss and Powdery Musk) What I'm hoping for: To experience a glimmer of the Gilded Age which this fragrance is said to be an ode to. I love how Alkemia describes perfumes in their catalogue, you're sure to find a time, a place or emotion that you want desperately to visit or become a part of your personal style. In the vial: FLORAL POWDER and RESIN that just harkens back to a splendid time of refinement, swishing gowns, tipped hats and frivolous ventures. Applied: Class and distinction with the FLORAL, it is what you wished your skin smelled naturally like. Definitely a mature fragrance and is by no means a childhood romp in the garden, this is romantic and earthy with the RESIN which my skin seems to respond positively to. I'm faintly getting a fruit (APRICOT is my guess as it seems to really amp on my skin). I'm still "training my nose" but I'm getting a hint of VANILLA as well. This is not your everyday scent, modern times wouldn't understand it or appreciate the complex beauty. I would wear this one to historical events or special night entertainments (I will be purchasing a full bottle in the future, a tiny dab goes a long way on me so I will happily use what is in the vial first). Words that come to mind: classic, refinement, mature, extravagant powdery floral, Ormolu *LES COURTISANES: Listed Notes: (Sugared Pears, Apricots, and Lychees; Spiced White Amber; White Florals and Nutmeg) (was a generous bonus sample Alkemia tossed in) With their shop you get an extra vial with the sample set of 5 (*a few restrictions on your choices but you can read about that on their page) and 2 extra samples if you purchase the 5ml bottles and all with amazing customer service! -TO BE A FULL BOTTLE PURCHASE and a future Feature Review/Post as soon as the last drop is used from the vial (which shouldn't be long). It's the perfect end of summer into the snap of colder fall weather scent. Just fabulous. alkemia.etsy.com I know I said I would come back another day to share my thoughts on SABRINA but I can't wait, fall is almost here. Sibérie Perfumes sibérie.etsy.com/ (the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site) siberieperfume.indiemade.com/content/artisan-perfume-made-love-magic-alchemy SABRINA (Listed Notes: Pumpkin, Amber, Chai, Vanilla Cream, Cinnamon, Clove, Ginger) Combined Thoughts: SABRINA was my first introduction to the diverse library of fragrances Sibérie Perfumes can offer. It was also THE perfume that had me over the moon once I sat down and carefully compared her beauty against a mass produced/overpriced alcohol based eau de parfum that had been my absolute fall favorite for a very long time. SABRINA conjured together all the right notes of the delicious pumpkin chai with an almost buttery splash of vanilla cream along with the natural notes of rich warm spices and a kiss of amber and all wove the perfect spell. I can easily tell why SABRINA is a best seller; it's a marvelous natural smelling gourmand treat that reminds you of good memories, to embrace the season and invites you to share the experience. The commercial perfume spray failed to recapture my senses and imagination as it had this unpleasant plastic note hiding under all the faux cinnamon that I never noticed before. Thank you Sibérie Perfumes for such a stellar selection that had me pack up my commercial fake scented sprays and going forth into the world of perfume oils. I'm here to stay and I smell magical! In the bottle: SPICE and buttery PUMPKIN As I am wearing this, words that come to mind: saucy, come hither, warm, fall, traditional, memorable sibérie.etsy.com/ the ETSY store is currently unavailable but the wonderful owner IS taking orders at her personal site and fall is right around the corner a perfect time to get your scarves and wraps prepared with magical aromas that stay with you and become a part of you)) siberieperfume.indiemade.com/content/artisan-perfume-made-love-magic-alchemy Don't forget about samples: this shop also generously allows small vials of different listed perfumes that range from bohemian, gothic inspired to historical and beyond along with a full bottle order. I purchased 3 bottles and received a special "thank you coupon" as well as 3 samples (2 of those will be featured in upcoming reviews. I can't wait to share my love of BOLEYN- unlike anything I have ever come across, a true jewel of artistry and absolutely something everyone needs to learn about). Usually when someone asks me where I have been, I jokingly say "distracted by something shiny or something that smells good" and that is exactly why my book reviews have been very sporadic but in truth 2017 hasn't been the most ideal time for new releases for me sadly and being completely honest: I have been losing inspiration to write anything worth mentioning since the end of April (don't worry I will always have something to say and share about the RMS TITANIC (just ask my coworkers)). But I'm happy to say, I'm back and my imagination and mind is afire with thoughts on my new obsession? hobby? (can smelling things and sitting in front of 150 year old vanity breathing in the past be considered a pastime? I think it can). Introducing my inspiration and muse to write: perfume oils! (and ETSY.com) But first I need to say goodbye to an old friend. Saying goodbye to an old friend and the beginning of a new venture: I have been addicted to commercial perfumes for as long as I could reach my Baba's perfume shelf. I remember the beautiful bottles and glittering caps (I was even a magpie then) and I even kept a lone etched glass bottle and hoarded it like treasure for years (it reminded me of my Pap) until it disappeared one day. That little scent exploration then led to my early years of seeking out the sales tables at commercial retail locations and spending so much on a bunch of body splashes, eau de parfum and spritzes that I'm ashamed to say I grabbed as many as I could and hid for many years because they smelled what I thought at the time as unique and mature. Well those are being given away because in June of this year I stumbled onto ETSY and innocently searched for lilac, gingerbread and vanilla perfumes and my world has not been the same. I fully admit before I purchased anything I researched for a week on what perfume oils were and what was so special about them. I was immediately taken that perfume oils have such a complex and interesting history and the way you apply them just harkens back to a simpler forgotten era and you honestly feel so pampered and glamorous as you dab the fragrances on your wrists and pulse points (but I didn't know that at the moment when I stumbled onto these mood elixirs). What also thrilled me was there were so many different combinations and notes to explore. I still wasn't sure for some reason and reading the reviews I was overwhelmed but intrigued by all of the definitions (throw, sillage, aging, wet, dry etc.) it seemed something unreal and "puffed up" plus I worried what something would smell like. I mean I know what vanilla or hyacinths smell like right? I would imagine once you caught a whiff of a buttery rich but somehow nutty noted carved pumpkin the fragrance is pretty straight forward albeit a bit faded and altered in the eau de parfum but still recognizable (baby you haven't smelled nothing yet). I kept having all of these negative thoughts about trying oil in a vial versus a gold caped painted bottle. The price was too good to be true also, I just spent a pretty penny on a fruit rose perfume that unfortunately didn't resemble roses in the garden or summer berries at all and here I find a listing of the same amount 5ml for $12 or 11.95 (with slightly different variations but essentially the same notes). Impossible I thought, why the difference of cost? Ah the sneaky devils at the popular perfume companies have been hiding a big secret it would seem (or I never noticed the back of the bottle or cared to think past coating myself in formulations that I thought smelled nice) because after more research I found that alcohol is the primary ingredient in my pretty labeled commercial perfume bottles and the smaller vials of oil last longer even though some are smaller than 5mls (a tiny amount is needed versus just putting yourself in a cloud of chemicals) plus they are only comprised of natural pressings, mashing, remaining or what have you of real fruit or herbs. You are almost given a gift of a dying art with the perfume oils versus the showy retail alcohol and watered down faux fruits and factory processed swill. Pricing was certainly a factor to consider (and revealing the real truth on the back or under the bottle) but what about smelling like everyone else, I thought my precious chemical comprised mixtures made me different even though I was surprised three ladies on my floor at work were wearing something very close to my favorite spring perfume only weeks before. Again research came to my rescue and handed me the deciding card when I found that perfume oils react with your skin chemistry and change on one person to another. Fascinating! Still cautious but very excited at that point I wanted to sample these oils and found a small listing of highly recommended shops on ETSY and decided to purchase from a few. Below is my first experience with the alluring world of perfume oils (I made sure to first read the charming descriptions and go with what I thought I would like in the notes.) *Even though this was my initial purchase these were not the deciding scent(s) that had me say goodbye to faux over hyped plasticy perfume, that first honor went to SABRINA by SIBERIE PERFUMES but I will save that review for another day. Alkemia Perfumes alkemia.etsy.com Samples: EARL GREY TEA VANILLE AMOUR MADAME PEARL LETTRE D'AMOUR MEMORIAM CIDRE D'AUTOMNE Combined Thoughts: As always I'm late to the party but I can't believe my luck and reaction with being very pleased with my first introduction to the absolute unique personal experiences these oils can offer. I admit I was hesitant at first (purchasing something untried or just believing all of the positive reviews) but this 5 piece Perfume Sample Set was perfect for a cautious shopper like me and I can't decide what to buy a full bottle of first or ignore the temptation to try more. For this initial dipping of the toe into the world of perfume oil I sampled: Earl Grey Tea, Vanille Amour, Madame Pearl, Lettre d'Amour, Memoriam and a beautiful autumn selection that I hope comes back in stock. I loved how each of these prepared oils smelled different from the tiny vial to my skin and I'm told they will only get better with age (doesn't everything) One scent at a time: EARL GREY TEA (Listed Notes: Bergamot, Citrus and Black Tea) What I was hoping for: I love the smell of Earl Grey Tea and I was hoping to find that refined comforting tang and zest you get from a piping cup. Also I would like this for fall or late summer and for it to very herbal (like rubbing your hands over a long stalk of bergamot and getting that gorgeous faint spice back from it). If I could wear this to work that would be a plus. In the vial: I get LEMON and TEA, there is a burst of citrus and subdued herbal back note. Applied: That burst of citrus comes out but the herbal spice slowly makes an appearance, exactly what I have been searching for. Still it's more summer or spring-like than I was hoping. I really like it though...Giving it more time to blossom and dry on my skin the comforting scent I loved is very faint now after 10 minutes. I think it is my skin chemistry. Very disappointed but will let it age (hide away in a dark cool box for awhile so all the notes combine). Words that come to mind: refined, summer, muted VANILLE AMOUR (Listed Notes: Madagascar and Tahitian vanillas, Tonka, Cardamon, Ginger, and Grains of Paradise) What I'm hoping for: Reading all the positive reviews I'm hoping for chai and vanilla, something with a suggestion of warm drinks and cold weather In the vial: SPICE and APPLE but there is a creaminess. It's very nice and soothing Applied: Apple (reading that must be the Grains of Paradise) but not the typical powerful fruit burst, it's not tart but somewhat sweet and that spice is wonderful and I faintly detect resin. I don't get any strong vanilla oddly it's like a sophisticated spiced apple cookie. I need a bottle of this! Words that come to mind: fall, comforting, dusting, delicate spice MADAME PEARL (Listed Notes: White Tea Leaves, Bone China, Vanilla Pods, White Pepper) What I'm hoping for: Again going by reviews but I would hope for vanilla tea and some pepper. Maybe even a little alluring mystery mixed in. In the vial: LEMON, TEA and PEPPER there is a elegant vanilla powder in the background Applied: the powdery lemon is center stage but is very pleasant with the elegant tea note. The pepper really comes out on my skin and I get another kind of warm note with the vanilla. I love this! Words that come to mind: hot summer nights, flickering gaslight, different LETTRE D'AMOUR (Listed Notes: Star Jasmine, Neroli, White Roses, Sweet White Amber, Perfumed Ink) What I'm hoping for: I can't honestly say I know what jasmine smells like and I'm somewhat leery of amber (thanks to years of being bombarded with "amber" sprays/concoctions from local mall shops, you know the one) but the perfumed ink sounds like something I need to know about. In the vial: SOAP and POWDER and there is a sweetness *Applied: the soap note was extremely dominant and I decided to let this one age for two weeks as they suggested. Coming back much better, the soap is there (reading that must be the jasmine) but the lovely powder and light sweetness and the ink I can detect. It really is a complex but pretty scent (perhaps a touch too youthful for me), not sure I would buy a full bottle but it something I will use for special occasions. Words that come to mind: romantic, pretty, vintage, spring, powdery soap MEMORIAM (Listed Notes: Dark Red Roses, Smoke and Ashes) What I'm hoping to find: something floral but deep In the vial: WOOD ASH and CANDLE SMOKE there are the roses and it twines beautifully with the ash Applied: I don't know how it is possible but this is beautifully strange in the best way, it's just a deep solemn scent that would be impossible to find in the mainstream. As it dries, it's like lighting a prayer votive in the church and there are roses around you as you place them down for someone special. I will be saving this vial for only certain days of remembrance and reflection Words that come to mind: respectful, winter, fall, November, January, beloved special *CIDRE D'AUTOMNE (Listed Notes: Fall Apples and Autumnal Spices) (*was a generous bonus sample Alkemia tossed in) With their shop you get an extra vial of your choice (one of two restrictions though but you can see those on the main page) with the sample set of 5 and 2 extra samples if you purchase the 5ml bottles and all with amazing customer service! What I am hoping for: fresh pressed and stirred apple cider In the vial: Exactly as promised. Home brewed goodness! Applied: This one surprised it starts out spice and crisp ripe apples then goes buttery on me. It goes from apple cider to flaky pie. Hopefully this one comes back into their fall catalogue, it's marvelous. Words that come to mind: country, home, spice, fall, golden alkemia.etsy.com More reviews to follow, I have so many notes to share The Scarlet Mansion had its vivid moments of terrifying believable scenes where I would catch myself wanting to shout out warnings to the unfortunate numerous victims in the pages but left me in the dark many other times at the uneven dialogue, repetitive chapters (containing either flashbacks of schemes, senseless murders with animated violence dominating the passages or meetings with another trusting mark) and ultimately so many wasted opportunities for this novel to really shine with an ominous lingering glow of any kind of character development. I usually enjoy a beyond gloomy entertaining book with historical essentials that keeps me up but The Scarlet Mansion just wasn’t it and I was actually hoping to get a reimagined look into the mind of the historic narcissistic psychopath and con artist known as H. H. Holmes (infamous alias of Herman Webster Mudgett). Sadly he was just a shadowy villain who: lurked, traveled, plotted, showed anger and then left the scene in a trail of gore. Not exactly much to think on or what I was hoping for when I picked this novel up after reading so many excited reactions to this title. Perhaps this type of story is exactly what others have been looking for an extremely dramatic: suffocate’em, poison’em, drag’em and drop’em batting of history. If that is what the curious reader has been looking for, you found a chilling example of real life inspired horror but if there are those who wanted more without awkwardly wedged lite facts in long conversations and disappearing atmosphere or even enough details to fully capture the potential of the enduring mysteries from late 19th-century Chicago, you may want to look elsewhere or put this one down and pick up The Devil in the White City, Depraved: The Definitive True Story of H.H. Holmes, Whose Grotesque Crimes Shattered Turn-Of-The-Century Chicago or H. H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil or just judge on the levels of evil and truth for yourself by finding a copy of Confessions of the Serial Killer H.H. Holmes (do remember though Holmes was a self confessed liar and was being paid for his "own words" at the time while awaiting execution). I don’t know about you, but I have always found true historic accounts and depositions more frightening than any fiction. -purchased and read on kindle -EGP/November 2016 “The beginnings, perhaps, of an intriguing collection.” In 2015 a strangely magnetic summary accompanying The Convictions of John Delahunt caught my attention and directed me into the expansive brooding atmosphere of punishing secrets, intricate metaphors and an overall impressive vintage flair with words that stayed in my mind and outside conversations for months. It was not only wonderful to find a distraction at that time from real life but a warped period puzzle all in a debut was quite something and I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Mr. Hughes latest mystery caper ever since. Overall I liked The Coroner's Daughter and fully admit the opening lines to this novel called to my (disturbing) dark sense of humor, honestly how can you not want to continue reading (or hold back a chuckle) when you first come across: “For my eighteenth birthday, Father promised me the hand of a handsome young man, which he duly delivered mounted in a glass bell-jar.” After that delightfully odd introduction, a familiar foreboding ambiance soon followed and era details kept my full attention. The urgency of the answers to the growing mystery were all nicely drawn out until the end as well but sadly like The Convictions of John Delahunt there were a few slips into modern sounding dialogue, contemporary expectations placed around the narrator and confusing spaces of action where I had to stop or reread to understand how a character arrived at a destination or where the narrator was in the chapter. It also seemed the beginning held the best passages and the final solution a little simpler than I had hoped but still this medical mystery/drama set in “the Year Without a Summer” with an inquisitive-natured narrator is one I would revisit again. -purchased and read on kindle -EGP/May 2017 “Herein lie the facts- decide for yourself”. A good conspiracy has tantalizing secrecy and a well recognized event that evokes anger, regret and suspicion about a forgotten era. Human drama is also a must when completing this list of what continues to draw us closer when certain topics are mentioned in a hushed voice. Titanic or Olympic: Which Ship Sank? knows this is what entices the curious reader and invites them on an absolutely fascinating tour that examines in serious detail one of the greatest theories that still follows in the wake of the 15th of April 1912- was it TITANIC or her sister ship OLYMPIC that went down with over 1,500 souls that tragic night? Upfront the authors admit that if true and the OLYMPIC was switched for the TITANIC this would have been the largest (and most elaborate) hoaxes on the public and insurance scam of all time. This work then continues onto chapters filled with the passages behind the popular theory, my favorites being: “Mystery or History”, “The Lifeboat Evidence” and “Photographic Assessment". In these heavily detailed sections the believed evidence is presented with entertaining information of missing names from rescue registries, undecided final tallies, double numbered lifeboats and even oddly colored paint under where the recognized nameplate of TITANIC rests at the bottom of the Atlantic. I’ll admit after reading all of the known and displayed “evidence”; I was beginning to believe the greatest hoax happened. It was the ideal time for this work to switch direction and build reality from the keel up to her distinct swan-neck vents. Time then flew for this collector of history who just stared for large increments at the next displayed snapshots with the key parts of the ships marked to clearly illustrate differences from the minute to the hidden in plain view. I didn’t want to put this book down and I borrowed a Kindle Fire to get the full effect of the photographs (some I have never seen before). The more and more the pages turned with these intriguing comparative pictures, documented testimony and re-examinations of the previous chapters (slamming aside fragmented statements and popular myth with cold hard facts); the more I could say “well I’m convinced” as well as “I didn’t know that!”. Even after that this book went on and precisely explained the intimate particulars that any familiar crew member could never have been completely fooled over or the complex contracts of silence that would have been necessary. Any possible lingering doubts were finally laid to rest at that point (especially when the quote from Violet Jessop came about) and my kindle marked that the book had ended but it didn’t. There were a few more surprises left (like dazzle paint) for this fellow reader of history and the concluding sections were centered on what happened long after the 15th of April 1912 for the Titanic’s sister ships. Those parts were equally fascinating as the beginning chapters and turned into a poignant narrative that sounded the final three horn blows on the decadent world that created the marvels of the oceans. A fitting ending for such a fantastic reference, I don’t think I will ever pass a photograph of the TITANIC or OLYMPIC again without counting the portholes, trying to look for the number “401” or “400” on anything at museums (or even high priced estate sales- I can always hope right?) or searching cinematic scenes for round windows versus rectangle. For everything this title offered and presented this is one book I couldn’t be more overall pleased in finding. Highly Recommended. -purchased and read on kindle *followup to: A Night to Remember by Walter Lord -EGP/April 2017 City of Light, City of Poison: Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris by Holly Tucker9/7/2017
“Half of the nobility have done the same thing, if I felt like talking. I’d ruin them all!” With a highly accessible narrative style, City of Light, City of Poison: Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris invites the modern reader back to reinvestigate a true extravagant scandal that involved a web of: suspicious deaths, damaging accusations, painful confessions and lasting ciphers that have all become to be known under the bewitching title of The Affair of the Poisons (L'affaire des poisons). From 1677-1682 the city of Paris served as the backdrop to a deadly mystery that went unnoticed by many including medical professionals at the time, what was thought to be simply explained by gangrenous accumulations of bile or mistakes on inexperienced autopsy tables would soon be revealed in vile depositions to involve poisoned shirts and pulverized toads. As grisly as it all seems, those are all only parts of the baleful truths that Nicolas de La Reynie (the first police chief of Paris) would soon bring to light and the polite belief that stops at privilege or esteemed morals would be destroyed forever in society’s eyes. As fascinating as City of Light, City of Poison ended for this reader who confesses to seek out and collect subjects of dark history; I wanted more and for the stories or cases to go on beyond 54% on her kindle. I also thought the beginning a little uneven (along with some spellings and wished for more photos of key names and locations in the final pages) but appreciated the strange ambiance this work eventually brought allowing the curious to fall in step with La Reynie’s investigations and persistence in everything. I also found the back and forth private and public dramas presented from the halls of Versailles to the mean back alleys (and even in the dank reaches of frightening rooms meant for the Question) irresistibly beguiling but at the same time refined with an overall notable respectable approach. I admit not always easy topics to read in detail come about in the pages of City of Light, City of Poison: Murder, Magic, and the First Police Chief of Paris and it did have its unfortunate personal disappoints but Ms. Tucker has certainly researched and conjures all the distrustful notions from 17th-century Paris from watching what your wear, where you step and questioning who you can trust to rise and flame the mind to learn more about all presented and that’s why this title is staying on my unique shelves. -purchased and read on kindle -EGP/March 2017 An emotional realistic tale that is hard not to recommend I admit I had not completely fallen in the enchanted tangle of Icelandic atmosphere and true life inspiration that bound together the 2013 historical bestseller Burial Rites. Perhaps it was just my reading tastes at the time and not to upset anyone but I found it very easy to put down. I just needed something more than the limited cold scents and bones of characters to keep me coming back and Ms. Kent’s second novel provided this wary reader with all she has been hoping for and even a few hidden tricks to delight along the way. Simply The Good People is an emotional realistic tale that is hard not to recommend to anyone who has been waiting for a good old fashioned story that is told in elegant prose with varied personalities you love to hate but oddly care about. In this yarn the reader is confronted with multiple topics but mostly grief, religion, old beliefs and what can ensue when one suspicious threat overbalances everything we think we hold dear. Like Burial Rites inspiration is taken directly from a true regional bygone crime and in The Good People harrowing events of June 1826 in rural Ireland are spread out in fiction with liberal drams of herb lore, powerful Irish superstition, proverbs and dangers of kin suspicions. For this reader, there were a few negatives mostly the stiff and awkward presented dialogue, periodic measured pace and the ending felt incomplete. Usually those disappointing points would have me rating a novel lower but The Good People had one or two tricks waiting cleverly in plain sight and I couldn’t help but raise my overall final impression when I encountered memories of reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond for the first time as Nance and Mary made their initial appearances. I also enjoyed discovering the potential of endless discussions this novel could provide and my fellow nurses have already debated long into the night over this story. This type of novel is not for everyone there are some very disturbing scenes that can overstep boundaries of comfort but it is well worth reading and if you are like me and the book description is calling to you with possibilities- you may find yourself in another place and time on the first page and by the final swept by The Good People. * I would like to thank NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the opportunity to read and enjoy The Good People -EGP/March 2017 The Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century by William Rosen9/7/2017
A puddle skipping journey into the 14th century that still regales and educates Not exactly an easy overview of late 13th to early 14th-century history and survey of weather conditions but one book that is sure to skip eventually into an interest of the reader’s. In truth, I was hoping for more of a complete feeling work with organized leaps in topics that wouldn’t lose or confuse (I had heard fantastic things about this book). Still The Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century certainly was an enthusiastic venture to shape the whirling descriptions and connect the Medieval Warm Period with the ever drastically changing population, geography, and complex politics leading up to the devastating roiling storm of conflicts of 14th-century England, Scotland, France and early Germany. Perhaps I misunderstood the original mini summary thinking this non-fiction title more centered on examining historic weather and famine but like Barbara Tuchman’s A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century it has rightly found a proper place on my shelf of late 13th to 14th-century trivia especially dedicated to learning more about the charismatic names of known legends and favorite historical novels. It may have had its own lethargic and frantic passages but is definitely a title worth the time to calm the mind and sit down with on a winter day. * I would like to thank NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Viking for the opportunity to read and enjoy The Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century Also published under: The Third Horseman: A Story of Weather, War, and the Famine History Forgot by William Rosen -EGP/March 2017 An intriguing homage that stirs the imagination of the amateur sleuth in all of us Suspicions, deadlines and a real life mystery that still baffles meld perfectly in this entertaining hunt into the past that follows the voice of Agatha Christie as she confesses all that transpired and her puzzling silence to the world concerning eleven days back in December 1926. A most sensitive case that Christie herself would not even mention in her own autobiography but somebody knows the truth and special arrangements have been kept and decades have passed since the death of the clever writer. The time has come for a tale rife with psychological twisted pressures and a guide who has a mind and talent for murder and concealing secrets. The beginning of the narrative is innocent as can be but as the events are pushed in the direction of dangerous doubt, the reader is inevitably invited to sit back and observe the rest of the public and many professions speculate and search for clues to the famed author’s whereabouts. This is deftly accomplished by looking in periodically with Superintendent William Kenward, the deputy chief constable who is determined to see to the end and answer: does this case concern inescapable madness, murder or simple explanations? The mystery alone stirs the amateur sleuth in all of us as we know the truth but still hold our breath along with two more views that add to what it would have been like to open the newspaper everyday to find out about a newly discovered scuff on a dirt road or vague conversation with a trembling woman who may or not be Agatha Christie. In this element, the actual known details are cunningly scattered throughout and those little tidbits of specifics are sure to fascinate and compound racing emotions until the final page. For this reader, as entertaining with actual facts and creative with the still unknown to happenings in 1926, I would have liked more era slang tossed in or additional touches of the always popular locale spread into the back ground. To be honest, if I had not already been familiar with the 1926 disappearance of Agatha Christie by watching a mini summary of the case and base facts many years ago, I would have unfortunately thought this novel set in mid-century America. The side story of the female hobby reporter also added to my list of negatives sadly, I saw the importance of the character but those chapters didn’t seem as polished as Christie’s narrative and took away from the built-up suspense by repeating specifics the reader just finished reviewing in other parts. Irksome negatives aside, I still think A Talent for Murder is one novel that definitely deserves attention and praise. It not only leaves the reader with a temptation to challenge their own little grey cells in solving an unsolved mystery (or two) but it also gently nudges those to take a second glance at the library shelves or sale tables and reacquaint themselves with the Queen of Crime. * I would like to thank Atria Books and NetGalley for opportunity to read and enjoy A Talent for Murder -EGP/January 2017 A remarkable topic that needs no garish dramatic trimmings… Some approaches to history and storytelling work more favorably than others, it just depends on the reader and audience. Unfortunately The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women tested my optimistic blasé attitude toward different writing styling and I couldn’t help thinking that in place of “If it gets someone reading…” that maybe History sometimes provides its own commentary and little needs added after. Perhaps the facts surrounding the radium dial painters is one of those perfect examples of a topic that needs no garish dramatic trimmings-those brave women’s preserved words, court documents and scientific specifics all tell their own remarkable story. I understand the connection with the stage this author has but the incessant dramatic flamboyance with heavy chapters just didn’t seem appropriate in several passages (ex. the various exhumations and awkwardly timed tangents). There were also the thickly spread expressive conjectures in these pages that had me shaking my head, I can only take so much “perhaps, as though, they were thinking, she must have been thinking, he thought only etc” before those parts have me wishing I picked another title. It saddens me to admit my disappointment with The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women and I do applaud the obvious research in other parts that didn’t seem just tacked on (you could clearly tell the author is fond of her subject) but the heavy chintzy figurative writing almost had me dreading turning another page and in truth I put this title down quite a few times. It was my absolute fascination with the serious subject that kept me coming back between looking up still frames, documentaries (a film entitled "Radium City", I highly recommend to anyone that wants to learn more), newspaper clippings and partial photos of the statue dedicated to the memory of those amazing women. Maybe in the end, this non-fiction work took certain flourishes a bit too far even though it was a relatively easy read in the beginning I still do not fully regret reading for the history and attention to such a serious topic. I just think I will find something more “appropriate” with something else on the available shelves. * I would like to thank NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the opportunity to read The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women *Also published under the title: The Radium Girls: They paid with their lives. Their final fight was for justice by Kate Moore -EGP/February 2017 “I’m certain of nothing but winter and battle” With The Winds of Winter (A Song of Ice and Fire, #6) strongly believed to land on many readers’ long awaiting lists and shelves this year (forgive this summer child for her optimism if for any reason this does not come to pass), I join those who have been testing leonine patience and preparing vivid cracking imagination for the next bout of ultimate betrayals, brutal struggles for survival and one uncomfortable throne made of a thousand swords. A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) is my second scheduled revisit to the enthralling world of Westeros and Essos and it simply astonishes me no matter how many times I reread favorite passages I notice some singularly hidden nugget of a wicked quip, new comparisons to our own history with striking twists and another appreciation for the fully shaded characters that populate the seven kingdoms and my outside conversations (sometimes to the exasperation of my tired nighttime coworkers). This is one novel that certainly keeps me awake after having a taste on a lunch break promising to linger in my whirling mind as time creeps on those long shifts. I get such joy sharing this series of stories with anyone sitting near and catch their eyes roving over the enchanting covers or the thickness of the book. I do tend to admit some novels in A Song of Ice and Fire (A Clash of Kings among that listing) are better than others and encourage all to begin with A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) for the foundation of the rampant adventure and unforgettable maneuvers of personalities (for good or evil) that will follow but the choice to begin turning the pages where they will is ultimately up to them. Although some chapters (or points of view spread across the included maps) create more exciting visions depending on the reader’s ever discerning mood, it is all worth the effort to finish and share with those who have not heard the call or simply need another reason to escape our own world for seven others. -purchased and read on kindle Books in this series: A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R.
