It's strange how certain things from childhood can reappear at the most interesting times when we need them the most and so it goes with this amulet. I was searching for a necklace to don at the Celtic Renaissance Festival this summer and saw this trinket and I immediately got a shiver as I recognized the intricate pattern as something unexplained I have been drawing and curiously doodling since I was a child; is it a sign or special personal sigil that will bring me luck in a new friendship, romance, passion, joy and that ever unobtainable and elusive element of trust? Time will tell, but all I know is this well-crafted and detailed amulet is home and has found a rightful place in my jewellery wardrobe as it layers beautifully with different pieces (or can be worn alone), draws the eye (and compliments) and the energy it gives off is serene and oddly familiar. In also finding this runic treasure I stumbled across another nifty little shop that offers esoteric wonders and I have added several items to my basket since purchasing this pendant and highly recommend WrenStones if you are looking for something unique and perhaps a little magical to add to your everyday. WrenStones Is there such a style called "Esoteric Grace", "Arcane Elegance" or how about "Gibson Lady Goth"? Well if there isn't I'm only too happy to dub it so as I have found such a connection with marrying certain eras of bygone elegance, meaning and powerful lasting energies together and surrounding myself with trinkets and wardrobe/makeup choices with these elements in mind. Hence another late night important search and discovery that landed me this time at the doorway of Terra Stones Astoria and in the end adding a little more to my authentic self. Here's what I found: Detailed Swan Sterling Silver Earrings Absolute stunners of a special personal affinity (Yes, little dark hearted/8th house-ruled, poison and dark history obsessed me has a soft spot for swans...judge me as you will, haha). A long search is finally over! These trinkets are esoteric grace at its finest (perfectly sized for the work setting; just like everything extraordinary and worth exploring in this world, you can't see the untold beauty until you get close then you want to learn and examine more). Perfect starter pieces from this lovely shop, I look forward to returning to add to my jewellery casket and more to my personal style. Detailed Ouroboros Snakes with Mother of Pearl Sterling Silver Earrings These gorgeous ouroboros ear drops represent so much to me and I'm over the moon a long search is over and the style (they are the perfect melding look of art nouveau and arcane), detail and quality are just the icing on everything. They just glow in the light, become the profile and the energy these dainty though powerful trinkets give off is inspiring and timeless. I simply adore them. Terra Stones Astoria I made a promise to myself at the beginning of 2022 that I would be my authentic self, no more hiding the real me or being afraid or caring what others thought. I'm refashioned from the ashes and finally stepping into my own and The Bard sums up beautifully how I feel and what I remind myself every day: "to thine own self be true". I've always loved that quote and the play Hamlet as well (Ophelia is another fictional character I most identify with) and when I saw earrings with that specific quote and it included pen nibs in the unique design, I had to have them. All in the same week I also spotted moon ear drops that I have been searching years for and put those in my basket as well. Needless to say, I couldn't be more pleased with my purchases. "To Thine Own Self Be True" earrings This nifty little shop specializes in taking stamps from around the world and crafting them into wearable ear jewellery which I have never seen done before. The earrings themselves are extremely light and even though they are slightly laminated, the edges do not cut into my ears or face. Now I do have to take care as I'm sure one rainstorm and they would be ruined as they aren't solid, but that's a small thing to note and remember. Crescent Moon Earrings Admittedly these are my favourite out of the purchased pair and the ones I wear basically every night. They add just the perfect final touch of esoteric elegance, special meaning to any wardrobe choice and their delicate size is ideal for the professional setting. Absolutely lovely and a great starter piece from this unique shop (a custom is now brewing in my brain for later this year involving a choker made of one of the listed pendants). Monique Weston Art Jewelry & VampireGothic FEATURED: ETSY Treasures (A very special birthday to remember all thanks to Cyan Owl/Part I)4/1/2022
I for one think it's perfectly acceptable to treat oneself to a special birthday gift (or 3, haha) to and from yourself and those few that know me shouldn't be surprised I went searching for a specific themed trinket for my birthday in 2021 all styled after the Persephone myth (a complex story I've always had this unexplained pull towards) and this little moon child and dark heart found exactly what she has always been dying to find for years at CyanOwl. It really was divine timing as I had been working so hard to alter myself since 2020 for a healthier body and mindset and this necklace embodies that for me. My Persephone Moon came beautifully wrapped- presented on a bed of velvet (in lightning quick time) and unexpectedly tells a story that is uniquely me (right down to the surprise curve in the pomegranate leaves looking as a storm is gusting). The craftsmanship is phenomenal and this is the type of signature jewellery piece that you wear with everything and you can treasure for years to come (thank you again, Cyan Owl for putting up with all my questions and little quirky requests for this order). What a perfect birthday and transformation gift for myself. Cyan Owl If I were to be giving out awards for the most impressively presented parcel I have received to date, DarkMatterTrinkets would be in the top running as their vintage themed ephemera stole the day and my heart when I opened my boxes containing a trio of lovely darkness that fit my every mood and wardrobe choice. This shop knows how to impress and create a dazzling display. Here's a closer look at my 3 necklaces and one surprise earring set that harkens back to a fascinating and terrifying fashion trend. Mina, eat your heart out. This creation is the one that first caught my eye and initiated the lust for all the sparkly necklaces from this awesome little shop (and idea for a custom future piece; stellar customer service I must mention as well). This necklace is so aptly named as the faceted stones are the shades of drops of blood and the main jewel glows with intensity in the light; out of the 3 I purchased the red stones are the heaviest feeling in the hand but you'll forget you are wearing them when you don them and transform in mood and character. Just as all the other creations they frame the neck very becomingly. Needless to say, I shall return for more! Over the moon and to the stars about this enchanting little shop and my new jewellery pieces! Each one beautifully frames the neck whilst telling a different story and transports me to a treasured era or film genre. The onyx stone piece is the middle weight-wise of the 3 necklaces and has me feeling like I'm starring in a Film Noir feature, just as the rest of my purchases the necklace came lightning fast and was gorgeously presented with little themed extras and hand-painted trinkets. What a find. The pearl necklace is the lightest out of all 3, but still stuns and garners attention. For me, this is the ultimate late Victorian to Edwardian lady's choice from her jewellery casket, it goes with so many various stones and clothing options. It also takes a lovely photo. These "Guillotine Chic" ear drops very closely resemble commemorative jewellery worn in the 18th century during the French Revolution. I love how these earrings out of all my recent jewellery purchases garnered the most compliments and chances to unleash my knowledge of morbid history upon the curious public. You can't go wrong with prettly tinkling trinkets of death, haha. DarkMatterTrinkets It's funny where late night jewellery cravings will lead you and for my next quest I wanted a statement earring set with a distinct vintage flair and I certainly got just that in lightning quick time. These dramatic earrings are stunning, they draw the eye and flatter the neck and asymmetrical face. The backs are cut-out so the only weight is felt toward the detailed lily motif and even that slight pull is easily forgotten as these drops are very comfortable and I love how the winds sing through these earrings when gusts hit them just right. These were my first taste of stepping into my own in 2021 and realizing some new things about myself and my "perfect year/transformation" that was heralded in my birth chart (it has been a wild ride since last summer and my appearance and overall aesthetic has drastically changed) and I couldn't be more pleased with this whole order and experience (NomadicMoonArts' customer service is exceptional as well, don't be afraid to message them with any questions) from this enchanting little shop and I'll definitely be back for more unique designs! Judge me as you will but for some reason this dark little heart was drawn to shades of blush-pink and peach last spring and summer and I was on the hunt for baubles from another era (to be more specific camphor glass jewellery) for an upcoming wedding (sigh, yes I came out of the shadows and attended a wedding; I know right? *hiss* haha). One late night search and I found myself at the door of BoxerLovingLady/SweetVirgil'sVintage (same shop owner) and coveting these etched glass earrings dating back to the 1920s. These were my impressions of this little colourful detour of style. My gorgeous antique earrings arrived ahead of time for the event which was a spot of luck because after promptly opening the parcel an earring fell to the floor and cracked (YES, they are real glass and extremely fragile in that way). I messaged the owner in the hopes I could purchase a new earring in time for the wedding the following week and I was elated that she offered to replace it for free so stellar customer service. When it comes to the design, these blush-pink earrings catch the sun, dance along the neckline and I received several compliments on them that afternoon and since then. They have become a go-to pair of delicate jewellery when I want to step out with just a touch more vintage flair and yes, they go with everything even my tried and true black and dark purple and greens that dominates my wardrobe. They look right at home on my vanity table and I'm officially a collector of camphor glass trinkets now. I would say this detour was amusing and I'm quite content at the end of the night. Highly recommend a look. BoxerLovingLady and SweetVirgil'sVintage There are 2 shops to explore both owned by the same amazing jewellery artist. BijouxPassionParis & PearlManiac Call it a morbid fixation or need to echo the past in some unique way but I went on a determined hunt last year to find replicas of certain jewellery pieces I associate with my favourite misunderstood figures to study from history and that odd venture landed me at the art nouveau and art deco decorated door of BijouxPassionParis on ETSY (they shortly after showing a sneak peek of this specific design opened a second storefront called PearlManiac which I was directed to for ordering). Needless to say I'm over the moon with this little shop's customer service, TAT (they shipped across the way from France) and quality. The owner was very sweet and patient with my MANY enthusiastic questions, the parcel arrived ahead of time and my earrings are everything I have been dreaming of seeing on my vanity table and wearing. The pearls are perfectly sized and even though button shaped they are matched nicely with no cracks or flaws, the design is extremely comfortable to wear (I even forget I have them on at different times of the night and I love the secure backings, dare I say I prefer this flat design versus a simple dangle which the Empress wore) and best of all, these pearl earrings set off any outfit I don with the right amount of little sparkle and glitz from a beloved era of read about. I don't want to take these baubles off and I eagerly add more styles to my basket from both shops with every passing day to join these lovely earrings in my jewellery casket. What do you think? I personally think I couldn't get any closer to the actual design or find a more perfect fit for myself, they are perfect! *Reviews composed in 2021 2020 into 2021 truly shaped up to be a time of transformation for myself and I treated myself to some special trinkets to celebrate, starting with these lovely finds from Grandmother's Buttons. Where to start with this nifty little shop? Their designs are stunning and original (many of the buttons shown are one of a kind and cannot be reproduced), the jewellery may appear delicate but they are quality, flattering and of course, eye-catching. Their customer service is phenomenal and I adore they send you coupons for future purchases and seem so down to earth and care about preserving and sharing history with their customers. These trinkets are the very definition of heirloom pieces and I'm so happy I discovered this storefront. Moon Cresent Bracelet- the little tag that came with each bracelet says this button is from the late 19th century and I can't stop musing on its particular history and story as I watch the little flashes of the cut steel moons and faceted centre in the light and relax further listening to the delightful tinkling sounds the dainty links make. Everything about it is enchanting and this little magpie found her signature bracelet. Antoinette Bracelet- this beauty hails from the 1930s according to the introduction tag and came from an era dress. I initially purchased this design because I thought it looked like a crystal pumpkin and it indeed does resemble a bedazzled mini pumpkin on my wrist and goes with practically everything I own just like the Moon Cresent Bracelet. Grandmother's Buttons *Reviews composed in February 2021 I guess the stars decided to shine a little luck my way at the end of November and December 2020 as I won a few giveaways on social media. These were the first two (thank you so much, UrbanWitchcraftCo and Pylies!) Sterling silver and rainbow moonstone planchette necklace from UrbanWitchcraftCo All thanks to an adorable feathered shop assistant named Lily who picked my winning ticket entry name out of a bowl I was sent a stunning necklace with a moonstone that has one of the most brilliant flashes I have ever seen in a rainbow moonstone (this jewellery artist has some of the most unique crystal/gemstone specimens displayed). I have been watching this curious little shop with much interest for months and this lovely necklace decided a custom in the future for flashing and glowing moonstone earrings to match in the near future. Finally, it was "Muppets Christmas Carol" for the win! I love super easy giveaway requirements and all I had to do was submit in my favourite holiday movie I watch every year. From Pylies: 3 lip scrubs in- Gingersnap Cookies (Chewy cookie with ginger, cardamom, chinese cinnamon and caraway) Peppermint Hot Cocoa (Piping hot drinking chocolate and a splash of smooth creamy peppermint) Christmas Crack (Saltine cracker, crunchy buttery toffee, a dash of holiday spice and thin layer of dark chocolate) I have a horrible habit from childhood of biting my lips when I'm nervous or when I'm not even realizing it anymore and these scrubs have been receiving a full workout so I can attest these all smell (and taste delicious) and have been a tremendous help with my peeling-winter-and-when-I-gnaw damaged lips. For those not familiar with lip scrubs they are flavoured granulated sugar with additional healing oils (nuts or fruits) added and you place a fingertip size of scrub on your damp lips and you rub gently in a circular motion to exfoliate and remove dead skin. It does take a bit of practice to get the motion down as it can be messy at first so start over the sink. I follow up the scrubs with more indies to seal in the softness, smoothness and moisture (I highly recommend Spirit & Venom Olfactory Arts' lip balm). All of the presented scrubs are as they say on the tin, it's hard to pick a favourite as I get a sense of delightful nostalgia with Peppermint Hot Cocoa (it reminds me of the glory days of Bath&Body Works and a long discontinued holiday lip stick/balm I adored so much and received many years in my stocking until it disappeared off the shelves one winter without any warning), Gingersnap Cookies is an addictive ginger cookie that brings to mind a recipe my English grandmother used to bake for family gatherings. So that leaves Christmas Crack and we have a buttery salty and chocolate with the barest hint of spice laced winner with this one as it tastes very much like a concoction I whip up for myself when I have a serious craving for salty chocolate and I shove a handful (or four) of semi-sweet chocolate chips and crushed oyster crackers into my gob at the same time and let the distinct notes meld together. Yes, I need to stop that, hopefully rubbing a little of this delectable lip scrub on my bitten lips will sate that craving instead. In addition to the little pots of lip scrubs, I was sent a few more treats! A Body Cream and Body Scrub. Candied Yams Body Cream (I couldn't find the exact notes but I do wonder if "Southern Haunt" wasn't renamed) This is a thick cream that melts nicely and releases a fragrance of heavenly spiced sweet potatoes, marshmallow, butter and even a hint of sweet hidden apple. I have been using this on my elbows and sensitive winter-chapped hands (concentrating on my cuticles) and it's a welcome home ritual now before I get ready for bed after a long night. I go to sleep with wafts of spiced yams and fluffy marshmallow and wake up 9 hours later with the faintest hint of warm spice so the scent lasts quite a while and I noticed the warmer you can get your skin after applying the better the results, so this is the type of formula that would work wonders with that the old "slathering your hands in cream and covering with a pair of thick cotton socks before bed trick". I'll report back on the next Self-Care Day. Witchy Woman Body Scrub (Soft Incense, Oud, Woodsmoke and Patchouli mixed with Clove, Cinnamon and Jasmine) Smokey, spicy and sweet floral decadence take me away! Witchy Woman is an interesting combination of notes and the scent continues on long after leaving the tub. The scrub formula is a powerhouse for my rough heels and even works on my elbows in those weird leftover spots that I can never get completely smooth especially in the colder months. The consistency has larger granulated sugar crystals for extra scrubbing which is a change-up from the other body scrubs I own. This formula was made for the long winter months and has been put through its paces already. Overall, this is another little wonderful surprising shop I will be exploring more from. UrbanWitchcraftCo and Pylies Someone very wise once told me that a specific crystal will find its way into your life at the right time to serve you and in the chaotic year of 2020, Labradorite and Moonstones found me. It all began with a long past midnight browsing on ETSY and a simple search for crystal necklaces, in honesty, I didn't know what I was looking for I just wanted to see something shiny I suppose and learn some new facts about crystals and minerals to store away (I blame my Libra and Gemini placements, haha). Everything stopped when I saw the photo of a pale green gold crystal dubbed "The Seeker" on Rissa Rae Moonstone's page. I didn't know labradorite could be found in that specific unique shade and the more I stared at the page, I more I felt drawn to it. I had to go back from break but the glow of that curious stone stayed in my mind and by the time I was leaving my shift for the night, I knew I had to have it. Ordering was a simple process and the exact listed labradorite necklace arrived at my door not even a week later along with a small additional crystal. To say, I was happy with my purchase is an understatement as I wear my first labradorite piece from this shop everywhere and enjoy showing everyone my newest discovery (and obsession). Here was my first impression and initial wearing experience: "Over the moon with my necklace! It's absolutely stunning to look at and is the perfect size while at the same time adds something unique to my wardrobe. I've received several compliments at work about it including the shade of this glowing stone matches my eye colour or makes my green eyes pop. I also adore the gentle soothing energy this crystal exudes as I feel so relaxed and somehow charged ready to take on anything while wearing this jewellery piece and I don't want to take it off. I must also jot down for positives the lovely packaging presentation and amazing customer service. This was my first purchase but certainly not my last from this charming little shop." 2020 started my own transformation for my body, health and mind and I felt myself reaching out to touch this talisman when I had self doubt, I know that may sound silly but it somehow helped me to restrain my old habits and hold my head up a little higher. The stone's soft energy or not, I ended up experiencing things I never would have thought I would attempt before and that only allowed me to come out of my shell a little bit more. I had a wonderful time in October and created some amazing memories for myself and guess what was around my neck in candid pictures that others so easily take everyday, but I strangely never would have allowed to be taken (I forgotten how much I have the same smile as a beloved lost loved one)? If anything this labradorite piece reminds me of those happy times in a year of uncertainty and to not take the little things in life for granted ever again. November blew in and I knew it was time to ask if the shop owner could create a custom necklace I have been dreaming of owning for years (I have been hoping to come across just the right jewellery crafter), a double strand moonstone necklace... I only just commissioned this particular jewellery piece when a stunning rare purple labradorite amulet additionally caught my attention from the day before on social media made by this stone caster and it wouldn't allow me to focus on anything else, the stone was just gorgeous but I figured it was gone. Out of curiosity I messaged and asked if it was still available and to my utter delight it was and it was waiting for me it seemed! The owner was such a sweetheart that she offered to bundle the necklaces together and send them at the same time. I think I chose wisely don't you? "Signed, sealed, delivered and I couldn't be more pleased with these pieces of wearable art or this little shop! When it comes to my custom pieces, the moonstones just twinkle and glitter on my neck in the light and no photo can capture that nor can the various depths of purples and golds in my labradorite necklace. These were my second and third purchases and I can't recommend Rissa Rae Moonstone enough if you are searching for a particular crystal and type of amulet to serve you through a portion of your life. Scroll through the catalogue and see which one "calls out" to you (what you see is what you are sent)! If you have any questions don't be afraid to reach out to their customer service (which is another facet of a phenomenal experience and icing on the cake). Thank you again, Rissa Rae Moonstone!" What crystal or special propertied stone will call out in 2021, I can't wait to find out and am ready to listen. Rissa Rae Moonstone Sometimes you don't know what to say except "thank you" and weep for such an outstanding act of kindness. That's exactly what I did when I was sent these gorgeous swan earrings from the owner of Boheme Bijou out of the clear blue. They encompass the sweetest and most elegant representations of history and the Art Nouveau movement (as well of a bit of the Art Deco style) so popular during the end of the 19th into the early 20th century (eras this indie artist excels at). I simply adore them and look out in 2021 for an Anna Pavlovna Pavlova and her pet swan Jack themed post to appear on my page on social media all because of these inspired stunners. Thank you so much again, Constance! Boheme Bijou I meant to hold onto these reviews until after I was able to get my tresses trimmed and coloured plus could take (or attempt to; sorry I'm not photographer) a more flattering picture, but who knows when that'll be and with so many opportunities occurring at the moment for everyone to get outside (on the porch, deck or breezeway; let's not go crazy now), shut off the lights to embrace the darkness and stare into the vast heavens for once in a lifetime astronomic type shows, this just seemed like the perfect time to share my mini earring haul from Serene Garlands Vampire Bat Earrings - Count Dracula - Gothic Victorian Demon - Crimson Red Blood Swarovski - Silver Gargoyle In the description on the shop page it says these were fashioned after a famous guitar player (I wonder who?) but for me when I first saw them, the iconic quote "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" immediately came to mind and I got chills even before reading the name of the creation or accompanying writeup. I had to have them. Now that I am fortunate to wear such stunning trinkets, I can see the workmanship and detail in the metal and the almost supernatural glow of the red crystals (honestly is there anything better than Swarovski? I don't think so). What a dazzling find and I can't wait to don these beauties and turn some heads. I've never seen anything like them and they really are heirloom quality. Art Nouveau Earrings, Half Moon Earrings, Moon Goddess Earrings, Moon Earrings, Art Nouveau Lady Goddess Earrings, Celestial, Stevie Nicks Another unique design I have never seen before and I fully admit once I learned they were based on one of my favourite musicians, into the basket they went, haha. I also adore the Art Nouveau movement in art and furnishing motifs so these pieces of mini art called to me from many angles. Wearing them, they are light, silhouette my neck nicely and the flash and twinkle of the moonlight crystal is a lovely finishing touch. They came in the option of silver or brass and the silver matches everything in my wardrobe and yes I have been singing Rhiannon in the vanity mirror since they have arrived. I'd say my first 2 purchases were first-rate successes and I have dozens of additional pieces waiting in my basket from Serene Garlands and The Mourning Era (both owned by the same jewellery artist) one shop showcases lovely cherubs, roses and iconic birds and the other storefront makes my black little heart flutter with all the elegant Victorian-esque gothic jewellery options. It's like two sides of a personality, I love it! Serene Garlands I now own several pairs of historical inspired earrings and necklaces all fashioned by this talented artist (who may very well be a time traveller) and when speaking about the above pictured I have been searching years for emerald themed earrings such as these. What a find and what a joy to see different beloved eras of study in the design (I see Edwardian and Tudor). I can't stop looking at them! They just glow with intensity in the lamplight and I have so many outfits to match these earrings with. When it comes to Boheme Bijou it's phenomenal customer service and quality and attention to detail from bygone eras of romance and class that is all unsurpassed in my book. Boheme Bijou The word stunning doesn't even begin to describe my experience with Dark Tales and my necklace. Picture this, being greeted by a cascade of lovely little dried rosebuds when you open your parcel and being dazzled by the flash and glitter of tiny glowing jewels surrounding a piece of mini art that brings to mind the quote "a touch of magic in this world obsessed with science" (if you know what movie that quote is from, you are immediately my friend) which you can't wait to take out for the night in addition to no camera photograph truly capturing its strange alluring beauty. Finally to end the experience 2 beautifully presented perfume vials that hold their own stories and a corked vial of tea that promises a tannic fruit-filled escape. THAT'S what you will get with Dark Tales and I will be back for more (seriously jump on these prices while you can, you won't be disappointed!). Poison Bottle Necklace | Alchemist | Gothic | Victorian | Vampire Blood *discontinued Described as a blend of magic, dark romance and mystery and this piece is all of these things and more as it looks like it belongs on the neck of historical-fantasy's title enchantress or horror siren in a Victorian drama. The flash and glitter of the different stones allows me to match this necklace with any outfit I wish and the true strange beauty of the vial holds my attention long into the night as I can't stop staring at the intricate details and puzzling how this sealed over vial looks so much like coagulated blood (coming from a nurse to say, that is quite the feat and should be applauded as strange as that sounds) or lovely wicked poison if you are squeamish, and yet if someone were to casually glance at this piece they would only see a high-quality trinket with twinkling stones and small red glass vial; I simply love I can wear this to workplace setting and still feel elegant and entirely unique. My box also contained a few extra samples of the different kinds of curious wares this shop holds. I must also comment on the level of detail and attention that is apparent in the packaging of every product. EVERYTHING just looks like it is from some wonderful mysterious fairy tale and tied with fitting black ribbons. Perfume Oils Morning Powder (White musk, Honey Peach, Rose, Geranium and Vanilla) My skin is unfortunately sensitive to glycerin so I have been brushing a tiny bit into my hair in the morning. And this is a beautiful vintage rose that wafts around with a drop of peach and honey. I love the description on the site talking about clean morning sheets, but this oil reminds me more of a luxurious bath of tea rose petals and drop of peach juice with vanilla honey. On me, Morning Powder is definitely more rose forward and I'm impressed the peach isn't morphing and staying true. Very nice🌹 Old Library (Bergamot, Basil, Rose Tree, Cedar, Vanilla, Vetiver, Peruvian Balsam) *Inspired by "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco Out of the two vials, this fragrance is my favourite as I get this wood laced spice/herbal blend that catches my full attention throughout the day and it's easy to imagine this being the fragrance of a medieval monastery library complete with aged manuscripts and dusty rose petals between the stacks. For longevity, these perfumes tap out at about 4 hours on my skin and 13+ hours in my curls. They aren't obtrusive to those around me which I greatly appreciate as my workplace has a strict fragrance policy. Loose Tea Midnight Fairy (composition of the "Midnight Fairy" includes a mixture of classic black and green teas, candied fruit, rose petals, cornflower, and natural aromatic oils.) I'm still a novice tea drinker, but I know what I like and I LOVE this tea blend. In the corked vial I clearly smell luscious peach and that note continues to enchant my senses as I steep this brew. I enjoy my tea cold and fizzy and Midnight Fairy makes a splendid bubbly tea as I call them when it is added to a carbonator with a drop of honey. It's refreshing, sweet and delicious and I would absolutely purchase a full bag or go for the lovely tea sampler this shop offers. Overall: I was extremely impressed with everything I was presented with and I have a strong feeling this won't be my only review about Dark Tales this year. Dark Tales Obscura Hortus Obscura Hortus speaks to my autumn loving heart through and through and I had the most enlightening conversations with the shop owner who made my birthday one to remember as I received a box filled with beautiful dried flowers and lavender buds, treasures (stones and crystals that mean something to the cancer sign, the dreamer and for the moon), scent stories and history. I couldn't be more pleased with this order and can't recommend this little charming shop enough. Thank you, Corrine for everything! (You made this historymagpie and moon child beam). Jewellery Pieces Pumpkin Patch Mini Bell Jar Necklace This necklace is a perfect wearable keepsake to carry around with me to remind me of my favourite season and brings to mind a captured scene of the trees and pumpkins from The Nightmare Before Christmas or Sleepy Hollow and needless to say, I have been wearing it at every opportunity possible. It's extremely light and has a lovely dark emerald drop at the end of the chain which drapes on the back of my neck and adds a touch of extra sparkle. Despite its dainty appearance, this piece can take on an curious toddler (who is a little Autumn Person in the making) with no problem and can serve as an entertaining ornament for a full afternoon. Custom Jewellery Set This whole set is inspired by the Swan's Song legend (as well as a special connection I shared with a dearly missed loved one who collected swans) and it looks like it has been pulled from the vaults of the Romanovs'. The materials used are freshwater pearls, opalite beads and mother of pearl. I wanted a statement piece that looked like it belonged in another era with a romantic feel to it and I also wanted it to be moody, ethereal and haunting with the illusion of rain droplets or ripples and white creamy/silver with flashes from moonlight coming from the stones. A huge tall order and Corrine came through with these gorgeous creations that no camera can truly capture the flash and brilliance of. When I wear these pieces, I feel like someone special is smiling and nodding at me from above. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect birthday gift. Candles The Sweetness Milk & Flower Candle (notes: mulberry, blackberry, citrus, and cream) This candle which appeared in my first order is sublime, to say the least as it smells like summer berries in sweetened milk and has a throw that is impressive and fills my entire downstairs with one inviting fragrance. It also has caught the eye er nose of a relative who never compliments my indie candles and I had to purchase 2 jars for her after I had seen her on different occasions trying to leave with my candle in hand, haha. In addition to the incredible fragrance this jar holds, it has one nifty element added that are real flower petals and small fern fronds pressed against the sides of the glass and as the flame dances in a darkened room the light shines through the petals creating one lovely display to relax by and just stare at. My only negative is I wish the jars were larger (they are 4 oz.) but they are mighty and hold their own for quite a while of time when burning and the owner has offered to sell me a beast-sized candle (my relative also wants one), so that will be coming home to me to enjoy as soon as our current candle jars go empty. Trick or Treat Halloween Candle (no exact listed notes) This adorable little tealight candle appeared in my second order and it smells like pumpkin snickerdoodle cookies. The throw isn't as pronounced as The Sweetness but I still enjoy hovering near it and reading next to it. In this candle, there are tiny pieces of dried petals on top that sink into the wax when melted and I would love this blend in a perfume or a milk candle. I'm curious if the 4 oz. size would have a greater throw versus a tealight (I am not going to lie, I want that pumpkin jar the larger candle is sold in to display on my desk). Dark Orchid Milk Candle (notes: deep dark orchids, creamy vanilla, and sugar) A tealight version of Dark Orchid appeared in my friend's personalized gift box that I ordered and I only had a few seconds to inhale but wow this candle smelled darkly beautiful, floral and mysterious. I could detect it as soon as I accidentally opened the box and when I wrapped it back up and gave it to my friend she kept inquiring what perfume I was wearing and if she could borrow it. I had to hide a smile as she kept asking what I was wearing and if I could get her a bottle then her nose went straight to the box and inside was the tealight wrapped in a fancy gauze bag. I don't think I have ever seen anyone run so fast to light a candle in my life, haha. Fragrance Oils *These blends (made of a base of grapeseed and jojoba oils) are more for ritual purposes and relaxation so the longevity is about 2 hours or more depending on where I dab them and the throw is more like a whisper rather than a cloud that could anger or disturb others. I appreciate all that because my workplace has a ridiculously strict fragrance policy and I love to smell this shop's creations in my hair when I turn or sneak sniffs when no one is looking. As the colder months are creeping in, I can't wait to experiment with this blends on my scarves, cowls and of course dabbing a bit on my pillows. Samhain (A blend of herbs, spices, and resins reminiscent of a chilly night in a pumpkin patch) There is nothing more relaxing for myself than the scent of warm cinnamon and in Samhain the note is front and center on application however it soon drifts into a delightful medley of vanilla, nutmeg and clove creating an ultra-cosy fragrance that I love to lose myself in when I need some cheering up. For me, Samhain is traditional and my childhood memories of fall in a vial and it may be a simpler combination of notes but they are mixed expertly and it never smells overwhelming or any note is overbalanced by another which is impressive because I amp cinnamon and nutmeg. Dandelion Wine (Sweet and tart pear, freesia, plum, wormwood, sunshine and green leaves, part magic, part nostalgia, and the bitter-sweet summer.) This is classy summertime with a lovely plum and pear combination that shifts to realistic greenery and woody herbs after a few minutes then dries down to a wistful heady floral. I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do with the listed freesia and recalling past experiences with commercial blends that listed freesia but once again indies have shown me there is nothing to fear with florals and I'm happy to jot down, not one headache. This is is floral sunshine to my senses and a keeper. Sarah, Mary, and Winifred (An odd, sweet floral and spicy scent, perfect for prowling the chilly streets on Halloween night in search of mangy black felines and little snot nosed kids who call people ugly. Rose, lavender, jasmine, cinnamon, vanilla, ylang-ylang, dragon’s blood, clove, amber and musk) Sorcière Rouge, is that you? Ah no, there is realistic lavender, jasmine and cinnamon that becomes detectable a few moments after application however I am getting that warm plushy velvet impression I always received with Sorcière Rouge, interesting. I believe it's the rose and dragon's blood reminding me of the other fragrance and as always the dragon's blood is turning to bubbles from a wand with my chemistry with a hint of rose of its own. I know this is an ancient scent recipe however it still shares its sultry dreamy secrets with its wearer and brings to mind something Sarah Sanderson would wear. 'Tis another keeper! Misselthwaite Manor (Dark patchouli and amber, the beautiful gloom and earthy sweetness of old wood, neroli, lavender, and a ghosting of rose. Sweet, dreamy, with an antique charm) The Secret Garden will always have a place on my bookshelf and in my dark little heart so imagine my excitement to see Misselthwaite Manor listed and with lavender. On application, this creation brings to mind opening an antique chest with lavender and neroli sachets laid out on top of clothing dusted and coloured ivory with age. It's oddly comforting and the addition of realistic dried roses and a dry down of warm amber creates a stately fragrance I will be placing on my pillowcases for the colder months to come or into my scented bookmarkers for when I'm enjoying another escape into a beloved topic of history or revisiting a beloved setting I yearn to see someday. Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin (Spiced apple, pumpkin pie, vanilla, and hay open the scent. Smoky patchouli and anise create a dark and alluring middle, sandalwood and a hint of dead leaves reminiscent of the ghosts of Halloween’s past round it out!) I'm rather picky about apple fragrances and Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin is impressive, smelling like realistic apple skin and flesh dusted with spices (no sharp soap or fake candy here). I also get the hay with vanilla and anise with creamy sandalwood in the background keeping the spices nicely tempered. I'm not sure if my nose is playing seasonal tricks but I detect a kiss of black pepper that is unlisted. Overall, it's very well blended but the only thing is I wish it lasted longer on my skin, ah well into my curls, unscented whipped soap and onto my spooky warm scarves Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin all goes. The Autumn People (The strong scent of disturbed earth, moss, and spice as though Mr Dark and his horrible carnival clawed their way out through the forest floor. Ancient frankincense and amber create a strange fog that billows from the midnight steam engine. It mixes with hints of sweet apples, pumpkins, and black tea that hover in the atmosphere around the sleepy autumn town. The presence of dark patchouli and vanilla lingers in the shadows with the dust witch. This scent is weird, wonderful, and unisex. Perfect for the Dust Witches and Mr. Darks of The October Country!) A sweet spice opens this fragrance then distinct notes of tea, sliced apples and resins appears on the mid dry down and finally an earthy patchouli stays along with warmed vanilla amber as well as a ghosting of spice for a good 2 to 3 hours. As its name implies, it is an excellent companion for the howling winds and Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin. For preference between the two, I find myself reaching for Mr. Moundshroud and Joe Pipkin but nod in approval to both well-blended creations overall. Baba Yaga's Broom (Woody, resinous, sweet, and earthy, like the ancient birch forest she resides in. The scents and herbs correspond with Baba Yaga herself: birch, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, frankincense, vanilla, and bergamot.) I just adore all of these themes of poetry, memories of old houses and Slavic folklore and Baba Yaga smells like the fragrance that greets me every morning after work when I open my bedroom door: cinnamon broom, resins, a little something elegant and ancient wood. Welcome home this blend says, you're safe in your realm now. This is the scent of my lair. The Lady in White (A floral, sweet, deeply haunting and otherworldly blend of spicy carnation, freesia, peach, black cardamom, and dreamy tonka bean. Like a whisper from another world, a spirit in a long white gown passing through walls, her sweetness lingering long after she vanishes.) This was the first vial I pulled out of the carefully curated box and no surprise I adore this! It's spicy, woody and floral on the opening with no dreaded soap rearing anytime and the florals are so fresh and inviting. It was a proper introduction to what this shop could create and how they brilliantly and expertly handled florals that usually sent me a rip-roaring headache (freesia and carnation) but this lady proved there was nothing to fear and I knew I found something special. In regards to the throw and longevity The Lady in White is one of the longest-lasting oils in the catalogue and is also a morpher and a trickster as it is barely noticeable when applied staying close to the skin but a few hours later I receive this powdery elegant (even a little unexpectedly sweet) enveloping farewell to end the night. A true keeper! Crow's Wings (Comforting and delicate, like the dark and iridescent purple and blues seen in crow feathers, warm, sweet, and magical: blackberry, vanilla, patchouli, violet, cinnamon, chocolate, and musk.) The applicator wand holds incredible notes of chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and backing of fruit but alas my skin chemistry just eats Crow's Wings at first and then only amplifies the violet and turns the chocolate waxy. I can't comment on the musk as I can never identify that element in any perfume from across the realm and the blackberry is overshadowed by the violet on me. I still like this oil and have plans for this blend as a curl oil (my hair amps spice and patchouli and I'm honestly impressed even with the violets they are more soft and powdery versus turning to cough syrup) but as a skin blend this, unfortunately, wasn't a favourite. Ode to a Snowy Evening (A magical blend of earthy trees like juniper and balsam fir, swirl among the scent of mints, spices, mulled fruits, hot cocoa, and the evening winter wind. Wear it while cozied up with a great book of poetry, while trudging snowy forest paths in search of the most perfect tree, while making snow angels, or sleigh riding!) I'm in love with all of these poetic descriptions and names of perfumes in this charming shop's scent library and I wish every one of these blends would play nice with my finicky chemistry but my skin has found notes to tease and torment with me and this time it's the chocolate, pine and juniper which are turning waxy and muted on me. Why?! There is a unique green mystery note that is still present along with comforting mint keeping me sniffing my arms but it's unfortunately fleeting. Does anyone wish to trade skin chemistries? I'm pretty fed up with mine. Rue St. Ann (Dedicated to the ghosts of St Ann Street and the legend of voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Gardenia, soft florals, hints of citrus and spices, ginger, sandalwood, benzoin, frankincense, and myrrh.) Oh, there we go! This is one sultry mysterious gardenia blend and instant love. I wore Rue St. Ann quite a bit this past summer as it strangely works in brutal heat and humidity with the subtle citrus, ginger and frankincense that smells revitalizing but still somehow dark with the buttery seductive gardenia. Why didn't I start collecting gardenias sooner? Another crowning jewel right here for my floral oil collection. The Witching Time of Night (An earthy blend of frankincense, patchouli, and black pepper is the fertile ground where blueberries and lavender sprigs grow. Hints of amber and heady ylang-ylang, spice, and ancient resins create a mysterious and transformative blend. This perfume is a shape-shifter, beautifully odd, and unique.) 2019 was without a doubt the year of blueberry, gardenia and lavender for me as I finally realized I am a fiend for all of these types of notes and must hoard them all like some fierce earth covered beast as I do the same with pumpkins. I can't get enough and The Witching Time of Night is another fine example and vial that will disappear quickly especially with the realistic blueberry amping along with black pepper and lavender. I'm honestly not sure what ylang ylang smells like so I can't identify it but I can say the background of frankincense and amber finishes off this beauty perfectly creating a hooded figure on the moors collecting fruit and herbs under a clouded moon. Grimoire (Inspired by ancient books of magic and invocation. The scent of black tea, tobacco, and aged leather. Earthy patchouli, sweet heliotrope, smoky clove, lavender, ancient spice, and incense smoke.) The longer this blend ages the more I'm falling for it. Right away I'm getting more early spring to summer book reading with Grimoire which suites me just fine as I already have Book of Shadows for the wicked winds and racing clouds at night during November. The heliotrope adds a delicate sweetness to the black tea and worn leather and the dried lavender takes this perfume to another level of lovely and magical. Finally happy to report with Grimoire, the black tea does not turn soapy on me and smells straight from a bag with a fancy label. Setting The Watch (Inspired by ancient midsummer fire celebrations. Sandalwood, cedar, lime, Bergamot, plum, spice, and hibiscus) In the vial and on application, Setting The Watch is a revisit to my childhood as I'm reunited with the unmistakable scent of sweet lime popsicles from a certain brand that that was in a clear tube with white lettering. Mmm, this is a part of summertime I had long forgotten as the lime is so energizing and I'm 5 years old again swinging on my Baba and Pap's porch while the windchimes clank and jingle and rainbow bubbles dance in the breeze. It's such a happy scent and the more this oil dries it moves in the garden or woods with the bergamot, plum and sandalwood as the lime fades away (time machine now, please!). Setting The Watch is going right next to Bombus pensylvanicus (American Bumblebee) for unexpectedly capturing summer childhood memories perfectly. Sleep and Poetry (Wind blows the scent of lilacs from an open window into a warm house filled with the sweetness of shortbread cookies, honey, chamomile tea and cinnamon.) Of course, the lilacs fade immediately on me but when first applied they are lovely and realistic with no soapy pinching headaches to report. I get the crumbs from a shortbread cookie, realistic cinnamon bark and even a drop of honeyed tea. It's a sweet and calming blend bringing to mind a folksy kindly figure pottering about in her kitchen. I just wish Sleep and Poetry lasted longer on my skin, here's another oil for my hair. Oh, that's better and the warm honey amps in my curls. Another keeper! The Owls Are Not What They Seem (Weird, extremely woodsy, deep, and unisex. Notes of Benzoin, Patchouli, Douglas Fir, Juniper, and vanilla) This blend is taking me on an evening walk into the hollow looking for deer scrapes in November with my father. The patchouli and vanilla are the most dominant notes on me with the fir and juniper fading quickly into the background. It's like sitting in the packed dirt among the old pine nettles listening to the sounds of the early night. Very comforting and another I wished stayed longer on my skin. Queen Mab (Essential oils of lavender, cedar, peppermint, jasmine, and vanilla intended to calm the mind, aid in deep sleep, and create vivid dreams.) I've had intense vivid dreams for as long as I can remember so I can't comment on how well this oil works for dreamwork but I can gush about the delightful peppermint, lavender and vanilla that opens this blend that helps me relax after a long week. For those curious, the jasmine drifts in the background adding a floral sweetness and peeks out on occasion along with the cedar. Queen Mab is another unique lavender collage to hoard away. To The Lighthouse (Unisex, fresh, and reminiscent of salty air, driftwood and seaweed washed upon the shore. Sea salt, petitgrain, lavender, lime, and sage.) I have never stepped foot on a beach or seen an ocean in this lifetime so I can't say how realistic this is to a setting, however, I can't help but love the salt, sandy dirt note that is amping on my skin. For aquatic medleys, To The Lighthouse is quite interesting that is doesn't resemble soap on me and has the quality as I can only describe as "natural". It tells a dreamy scent story I wish to learn more about and I truly hope this is what a stormy beach smells like. Walpurgisnacht (Tobacco, honey, aromatic woods and spices, and a touch of rosemary. Sweet spring, fresh air, and a dash of hell fire!) Tobacco and honey seekers look no further than Walpurgisnacht as this spring golden honey and a scattering of fresh tobacco from a pipe. The rosemary is hidden on me and I amp the honey and something bringing to mind a floral; perhaps even unlisted sandalwood is waiting on the dry down as well. Mmm, it smells like honey tea sticks on me and a pouch of pipe tobacco which is all extremely comforting and reminding me of March winds and April showers. The First Hint of Spring (An attempt to bottle a spring morning. Dewey grass, muddy earth, sweet floral wisps of lavender and violet, and damp wood) Well, this attempt described above is truly ace and I can't stop huffing my wrist. This is the scent of fresh sun-warmed grass with sweet lavender and powdery violet on the breeze. Wow, this is gorgeous and the best atmospheric of spring grass I have come across in the indie realm. I just want to roll around in this fragrance and stare up at the scuttling fluffy clouds. The First Hint of Spring is a must to try if you having been searching for a little vial or bottle to hide away and remind yourself in the dead of winter of the magic to soon arrive. Brava, Corrine! Once Upon A Midnight Dreary (Patchouli and anise conjure the image of a dark chamber, and a stately raven repeating “nevermore”, bergamot for wisdom, a ghosting of lavender and violets for the nagging memory of Lenore, and clove for the dying embers who wrought their ghosts upon the floor.) I could bathe in star anise and Once Upon A Midnight Dreary is a fine example of that mysterious spice that just sweeps me away along with lavender and clove. I usually amp patchouli and violets to the heavens but this and a few others from the scent library of this curious shop have me excited to see violets listed in the description; that in itself is well worth mentioning and applauding. I know which special scarf this gem is going on. Stay Off The Moors (Inspired by full moon nights when werewolves lurk in fog, out for blood! A deep, arguably more masculine blend of peony, cypress, patchouli, black sandalwood, musk, and oud wood.) The above notes create a delight for my fiendish little imagination as it conjures a brooding Gothic anti-hero who let's be frank is a cool drink of water with a sweeping top hat, whew this one is seductive smelling. It's like this extremely debonair mysterious Victorian Gentleman has entered your life but has a dark side when he leads you into the moonlight that you should fear but can't stay away from. I already asked if the scent artist could create a hot vampire gent scent next. Ahem, I'll be tucking Stay Off The Moors away for future use, haha. Dear all available men, WEAR STAY OFF THE MOORS! Lady Anne's Ghost Garden (A smoky rose, gardenia and coffee brew, punctuated by wisps of sandalwood and vetiver ghosts, cardamon, tonka bean, and a hint of clove.) This perfume is inspired by a fascinating 17th-century woman, however, on me, this blend brings to mind a haunting 1920's Jazz Singer all in shimmer under the smokey spotlight. The coffee melds beautifully with the cardamon, sandalwood and florals, sweeping me away to another era and I feel I could croon and sway wearing Lady Anne's Ghost Garden. I must also note here's another impressive mixture of notes that usually go oh so wrong on me but somehow magically create something unique and to recommend. The Ride-by-Nights (The faintest hint of cinnamon swirls in a breeze of oakmoss, sandalwood, neroli, sage, and hay. Patchouli and hints of lofty tree tops, night air, damp earth, and myrrh. This isn’t a typical spicy autumnal scent. It’s fresh and crisp, reminding one of the magic that lingers in the air in autumn, especially on Halloween night!) Cinnamon is another note I can't get enough of and it swirls wonderfully with the neroli, hay, myrrh and patchouli ending as a sweet fruit fragrance with a spooky playful undercurrent. It smells like airy candy matching the poem of the same name and is another oil I will be using for my curls. Top Picks (in no particular order): The Lady in White, Rue St. Ann, Stay Off The Moors, Misselthwaite Manor, Baba Yaga's Broom, Setting The Watch, To The Lighthouse, The First Hint of Spring and Samhain Shiny Stones And Special Meaning Crystals And finally, I present my collection of 20 special stones and crystals selected by the owner that means something to the cancer sign, the dreamer and for the moon of course. *Each stone was individually wrapped and labelled with either a specific meaning attached or accompanied by a fascinating myth surrounding the stone or crystal. These shiny items arrived with an adorable bottle of incense and a palo santo wood piece with lavender that not only smells incredible but is for "cleansing you space". I'm not honestly sure how to review crystals so I'll just post my thoughts on the certain stones which I guess have "selected" me and have become something very special for me. Satin Spar (Selenite)- I asked for a stone that would remind me of the moon and Selenite is it with its white glowing brilliance that looks like I'm holding a beam of moonlight. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Satin Spar (Selenite) was named after the Greek Goddess of the moon Selene. It seriously looks like you're holding a bit of the moon in your hand! So lovely *Don't get it wet, it dissolves" she also mentioned "it's a great stone for cancer zodiac, aids in psychic abilities, connection to the moon" **Just a brief note from a crystal novice: This stone is very soft versus say Kyanite and WILL break. So a little caution isn't a bad idea. Handle gently. Rose Quartz- This stone is probably my favourite as I find the most mysterious comforting energy from it and I know this sounds bizarre but when I'm holding it, it's like I'm holding the hand again of a loved one I miss every day. It even warms up and the added weight in my palm creates this amazing experience. I don't know if a stone can "remind you of someone's essence or spirit" but Rose Quartz is my Baba. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Nurturing, grounding energy, cancer stone, soothing and peaceful". There is also a wonderful myth attached to Rose Quartz that involves Aphrodite (you can read it on Obscura Hortus's site as well as many other fascinating legends connected to each stone and crystal available for purchase). Labradorite- If Selenite is the clear beam of glowing moonlight then Labradorite brings to mind the moon behind night clouds. It has this aura about it that shines and flashes and I would love a cabochon necklace of this dark protective stone set in a satellite style with perhaps carnelian drops or moonstone. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Inuit people once believed the Northern Lights fell from the sky and became trapped within the stone. It's like holding a piece of the night sky!" also "Stone of transformation, bringer of light, spirit communication/protection". Lapis Lazuli- This was a complete surprise addition that has been a lovely stone to hold while I'm either browsing the wide web or typing out my thoughts as I am now. It's a nifty inspiration stone which I would love to start collecting jewellery pieces (and a pen) of soon. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Mined as early as the millenium B.C./was ground into powder for blue paint pigment during the Renaissance/adorned the funeral mask and sarcophagus of King Tut (Egyptians used it n funeral rituals)/was believed to be the starry night sky and flesh of the gods." "Enhances the mind and creativity. Wonderful stone for writers". Black Kyanite- To me, this stone looks like a shard of coal and iron melded together. If Rose Quartz is my Baba, Kyanite lets me think of my Pap. I'm eyeing that Kyanite necklace on the site hard at the moment but would love a pair of stone earrings to match. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Black Kyanite for protection and clearing negative energy". Optical Calcite- When I first browsed this curious shop's full listing this was the initial stone that caught my eye and I loved the trivia that was posted about it. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Vikings used it as a compass to navigate the open sea. By passing light through calcite, even on cloudy days, it's possible to detect polarization rings to locate the sun". "Excellent cancer zodiac stone, aids in self-expression and keeping emotions in check". Dominican Amber- Yes, I did dance and seal clap in pure glee when I saw a piece of genuine amber was added to my order. Jurassic Park is one of my top five favourite films and I already collect amber jewellery. Don't look at me like that! When you are holding amber polished or not, you are holding the world's history in your hand. It's millions of years old and it's feather-light which is also so flipping neat about it. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Beauty, longevity, cleansing. Put under a black light! (it looks so cool)" Note to self get a blacklight. Larvikite (Norwegian Moonstone)- This was another stone that immediately caught my attention when I saw the photograph of this unique speckled stone. The legend of it being another fallen piece of the moon had me revisiting the page for weeks before I finally decided to contact the owner for this huge custom order. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Hightens the senses, elemental magic- clarity & meditation". Herkimer Diamonds- I received one and the other was found in my friend's curated box (she is a Gemini and stones attached to her sign and for different reasons I asked for were selected: Green Opal, Tiger's Eye, Rose Quartz, Emerald). Wait until you hear why this stone is so different from others. Here's what was shared about this stone: "Herkimer Diamonds create a cosmic link between friends and loved ones. You and --- both have one, so you'll always be in tune no matter the distance". "Spiritual wholeness, high vibrational healing stone". Overall this whole custom birthday order was more than I could have asked for to find. This was the first time in years that I smiled on my birthday and I can't recommend this little shop enough whether you are looking for a unique scent, stone or some trinket with various purpose and meaning. Obscura Hortus Late at night, your mind tends to wander and past midnight talks with your coworkers can be a fascinating insight into your fellow man and your own loosely veiled ambitions and thoughts. I've listened to quite a few interesting stories and probably bored to tears my colleagues with my own incessant ramblings on different trivia, book recommendations and of course my er... obsession? fantasy? determined goal? What have you, of being the first in line if they ever have time travel possible in our lifetime. Crazy yes but it helps pass the enclosing darkness and time to think what it would be like to go back to simpler eras and I always come back to the late Victorian era to early 20th century as my choices of escape. I can't explain exactly what is so drawing or absolutely captivating about those time periods (perhaps a past life?), maybe it's the forgotten customs, values, work ethics or common courtesies (honestly doesn't a gentleman bother to open a door or pull a chair out for lady anymore?). Send me back to those good old days please because I'm ready and I have the jewellery in my antique portmanteau packed just waiting for that ticket. I know I'm not alone judging by the number of shops and specialty fashions that cater to those and alter reality for a few flashing seconds as you open a presented box or view a new listing that harkens back to bygone eras of sophistication and forgotten gentility. You can't escape or deny it as they welcome you to think about another place and time and I found all that to be true with Titanic Temptations (titanictempations.etsy.com). Being one of the introductory shops (along with Boheme Bijou (bohemebijou.etsy.com) that I purchased from when I joined ETSY and happily fallen into a new way to shop (Goodbye Amazon) for pieces of inspiration and scents of the past. Here are my first earrings from this lovely shop: As always the picture doesn't do these ear drops justice, they have facets and crackles in the stone that when you hold to the light they just glow with a real ruby's intensity. They are extremely well made and are sure to give me years of enjoyable wear. I also given a generous coupon with my first order and can't wait to shop at Titanic Temptations again. This storefront is something to see as the jewelry artist takes inspiration for her designs from the Victorian, Edwardian eras and even plays with the Steampunk theme creating one of a kind treasures which call to anyone who appreciates sparkly masterpieces that you will find a place in your wardrobe for or simply demand you buy something worthy (I've already purchased numerous blouses to go with my earrings) and it's hard to resist when you see that next twinkle of color or style you know needs to be with you. I know I couldn't resist because here was my next purchase: Admittedly I'm usually not a huge fan of the color orange but something special caught my attention with these baubles and I revisited the page for days. So glad I finally purchased these as they hold all the vibrant shades of autumn and have the swirled caps that bring the Victorian elegance that I love to find in unexpected places. They are also made of carnelian and jade both ancient special property stones said to bring good luck, happiness and confidence to the wearer (sounds good to me). I better be careful though if this shop could get me to like orange there's no telling what I may buy next (be afraid pocketbook and get ready for November 24th). When I first beheld these stunners at Midnight Vision (midnightvision.etsy.com), James Horner's haunting masterpiece "Hymn To The Sea" was playing in my ear and I felt a distinct shiver as I sat in front of the screen. It's not every day I find a piece of ornamental art that has the combined arrangements of color and artistry that reminds me of a cinematic favorite (scoff if you will, Cameron pulled his many background details from Walter Lord's classic A Night To Remember and he even referenced current leading names on the marvel of engineering known as RMS Titanic to achieve applaudable accuracy). From the particular shimmering tones of blue that can only be found in the depths of the ocean to the familiar heart-like adornment (a hint of romance never hurts) and the extravagant floral motif that looked like it belonged on the sculpted wall moulding in the infamous dining room; I loved everything I saw and needed these earrings to grace my collection. Even from so far across the sea these jewels arrived in pristine condition but there was an understandable wait before that (it gave me ample time though to anticipate and browse further into this beautiful catalogue) and in the end they were worth every penny! I honestly can't stop staring at these earrings as they dance and flash in all different types of light with the most entrancing shades of blues and create a becoming silhouette between ear and neck (they are also very comfortable to wear). I will definitely shop at Midnight Vision again and recommend this shop to those searching for not only a special event accessory but a well deserved lavish gift that balances yesteryear with touches of romance.
midnightvision.etsy.com Having collected over the years a wide assortment of costume jewelry (mostly brand 1928 earrings and necklaces) nothing I have accumulated compares to the heirloom-like quality I have purchased from ETSY shops. The obvious inspirational flash and beautiful sparkles and glows are something that I'm thrilled to discover and hold up to the lamplights. It's hard to describe the feeling of elation and breathless wonder when I unwrap that perfect "something" and, so it goes with these next little treasures. Poring over my lists of "must haves" and "must seek next", I needed a blue set of earrings but not just any tone I wanted a royal saturated shade that you just don't see anymore. I was also just finishing up one or two titles on a personal favorite subject and decided an additional requirement was a certain inspired look when I found my earrings. It took some patience but after scouring through the search feature on ETSY (I wish the function was easier to use) I stumbled onto these gems and Wild Scarab Jewels (wildscarabjewels.etsy.com): (As always the pictures don't do these earrings justice, they have such captivating depth of color that accentuates the elaborate nature of these ear drops) It's easy to see the influence of Fabergé and I dare say these baubles have a museum-like quality about them that I will show off for years to come.)
Not only did I find the inspired look I have been hoping for but Wild Scarab Jewels has a little secret: the owner and jewelry artist is a published author who knows and appreciates the majesty of history and lost elegance of various bygone eras. It's always entertaining to see past the ink-smudged hands of writers into a rare glimpse of their own motivation or personal style and this shop offers all that and future temptations that I can't turn away from (especially the special limited edition Swarovski stones that you can't find anymore). Needless to say I will definitely be purchasing from Wild Scarab Jewels again and welcome anyone to have a look into this catalogue of finery (I don't think you will be disappointed). wildscarabjewels.etsy.com This next shopfront I’m about to introduce is one that you could say “started it all” with me as it was one of the first shops that drew me out of the shadows of “window shopping” when I stumbled across ETSY. It only took one glance (and it was two sets of jewelry in particular that stopped me and I could swear I heard graceful classical music playing) to quickly realize this styled shop catered to those who appreciate and covet the elegance of bygone eras as the owner has a special affinity for history, literature and a love for the theater and film. Her works of ornamental wearable art range “From Lady Macbeth to Lady Mary” and needless to say I couldn’t resist anymore once I saw a picture at the very bottom of the site of her displayed shelves of research with numerous various fashion history books and I highly recommend you have a look and stay awhile at Boheme Bijou because you won’t forget the experience, I know I won’t. So what were the jewelry listings from Boheme Bijou that initially sparked my ever vibrant imagination and had me swear I could hear “Valse Septembre" and "Hochzeitsreigen /The Wedding Dance Waltz” softly playing beside me (but then again that may have been my playlist on my phone but it any case) and had me create a special reminder marker in my browser that I revisited for days AND tempted me enough to finally join ETSY? Why TITANIC inspired pearl earrings and a classic lavaliere style necklace of course and here they are: My first purchase from Boheme Bijou was the TITANIC inspired pearl earrings that arrived within a few days and introduced me to the exceptional way ETSY shop owners treat their customers with personal thank you notes and I was even given a “thank you coupon” for my next order. The earrings themselves were beyond my expectations as they were unlike anything I have seen out in the modern set, they capture the flourishing architecture that was popular in the early 20th century and the pearls are the off shade of antique cream that compliments any occasion. I have worn them constantly since they have arrived. When I contacted the owner of this magnetic shop to see if she could make a single pair of earrings to match the dazzling necklace I just purchased from her FALL SALE, I had no idea how over the moon I would be. The attention to her customers before and the final reveal are a credit and are an example how customer service (she is such an absolute sweetheart) should be and these beautiful custom earrings and matching necklace perfectly embody originality and sophistication. They arrived only a few days after I ordered them and as soon as I saw them nestled together I knew I had to wear my LA BELLE ÉPOQUE (by ALKEMIA PERFUME) perfume when I showed off this collection as I felt these gorgeous glittering jewels echoing the past demanded my best and the riche powder floral scent that makes me feel in another place and time was a perfect additional accessory. If only it was entirely socially acceptable (in my world it is a must though), I would have also worn a picture hat with gloves to work all night as well but to spare my coworkers any awkward silent moments I just wore a classic lace blouse. Picture hat and gloves excluded this set was still an utter rave that night; the historical green color (so reminiscent of a personal beloved shade interestingly called “arsenic green” but was listed on the site as “fern”) with aged gold is just stunning to see (they glow in any light) and these new additions have quickly become favorites (I don’t want to take them off) and will be treasured for years to come. Thank you Constance your fine attention to the former ages of splendour and class are brilliantly displayed; please keep doing what you do because I will definitely be back to visit your exquisite catalogue again. 10/3/2017 06:28:09 am Thank you so much for this wonderful shop review. I am beyond thrilled and honored to be featured on your magnificent blog. As a designer I try to imagine the life that each creation will have once they leave my work table and ship to their destinations. Your beautiful descriptions here give me some insight into the kind of adventures these jewels will have. Thank you for giving them the life that I hoped they would have when I first created them. Your words inspire me and motivate me because sometimes as a creator of historically inspired jewelry, you wonder if what you created really invokes the feeling of the era. I've loved history my whole life, especially the Belle Epoque and Edwardian eras. If I could time travel, it would be back to this period. Thank you for sharing your captivating blog. I look forward to reading future articles. With much appreciation and gratitude, Constance Boheme Bijou Anyone who knows me (or sits by me long enough) is already acquainted with something I dare to imagine will be what I dearly hope someday to become a reality and a journey I will never forget- traveling to the UK and walking in the steps of history (and inspired literature) that has enchanted me since I was a child. In the meantime though my mind may be: wandering up the steep paths to the Glastonbury Tor or planning ahead to trek the hills to Haworth, Top Withens, Ponden Hall and sitting down and becoming bewitched body and soul at Chatsworth House and also scouring the beaches and cliffs of Lyme Regis for forgotten fossils, lingering in the shadowed lanes where Saucy Jack once hunted, touring the now quiet historic battlefields and towers as the crow (or raven) flies and of course standing dressed to the nines (large picture hat with my cache of pearls included) in The White Swan Hotel's Olympic Restaurant (to name but only a few items on my long list of anticipated excursions) but some part of me still needs to be grounded in this current place and time unfortunately. That part nevertheless requires the vintage touch in my everyday life also you see and another search on ETSY has brought me just that with another discovery of a hidden treasure: English Vintage Design What caught my immediate attention (besides the beyond irresistible banner that called out home to my wandering soul) was the unique one of a kind selection that this charming shop offered with hand painted swirls and dabs of shades of every color in nature but it also held a special surprise for this classic book collector in the end. It only hit me as I was happily losing myself in looking at the delicate individual artistry with such fitting names as: "TATTERED ROSE", "DEADLY NIGHTSHADE", "PURPLE VELVET", "MISTY ROSE GARDEN", "ROAMIN IN THE GLOAMIN", "ALICE BLUE GOWN", "CRANBERRY SAUCE", "PURPLE TOADFLAX", "BURGUNDY SHIMMER", "LICHENS", "IRIS" (sorry I can assure you there there are many different pigment combinations (and lovely whimsical vintage items connected to nature and lush country gardens to be found) covering every spectrum of color but my eyes go straight to anything purple, rose related, green, pearl/gold themed or bluish-green), and "PEACOCK & PINK" etc that one selection (one frosted white flower pair) on the final page brought this directly to mind and I had to stop and smile: Being one of my favorite books (THE ACCURSED KINGS series is such an understated collection of works that I highly recommend to anyone who loves good old fashioned storytelling and quill dips of sinister adventure, tales of revenge, courtly intrigue and clever battings of "what if") I couldn't believe my luck of finding such similar styled earrings (can't find those in the states, believe me I've looked and asked) and I immediately started building up my lists of items I would like in the future (those earrings included) from this store, I acquired quite the basket of goodies to think further on and was slowly narrowing down my choices when I saw the deciding pieces I had to have (the accompanying descriptions were masterpieces of advertising and so inviting- as are every little summary within this shop). Here are my new treasures to share: Two of my favorite seasons beautifully encompassed in ornamental jewellery form (the above pictures don't do these exquisite fashioned pieces justice) to have with me everyday and custom made earrings to match any choice and to add a much needed class and delicate grace to my earring wardrobe (they are so dainty and pretty- perfect for any occasion). In addition to all those positives, the owner was an absolute gem to work with on this order and I would like to thank her for sharing her finesse with a brush and eye for color and detail with the world, I will definitely be back at this charming shop soon. Not even a week later I saw these sets of earrings and couldn't resist, they arrived packaged with such care and attention, are so light and just lovely (unbelievably comfortable to wear that at times I forget I have them on). The hand painting of the flowers are so beautifully done that they honestly look they they have been gathered from some enchanted garden. Needless to say, I don't want to take them off and I now must have a set from every unique color listing from this shop. Absolutely love them! englishvintagedesign.etsy.com |
