"Find out what people are afraid of and then sell it back to them. " This is a curious example of the films (1947 and 2021) far surpassing the source material but still the book holding its own on my shelves as I enjoyed this noir tale of morality and corruption and highly recommend the original novel especially if you delight in reading in-depth about tricks of the sordid trade of sideshows and the fashion of early spirituality that swept across parlour rooms and entertainment halls during the early 20th century along with complex characters and certain consequences of actions (or is it all left up to chance and the lay of the chipped cards on the table?). What the silver screen adaptations cleverly leave out and then reserve in store to keep the audience in shock and awe are the darkest trails and psychological games played out beautifully leading to an ending spread out in the beginning as well as disturbing symbolism in shadowed jars or bolts of lightning, however it all still catches you off guard and you love every chase and second of it. The book does showcase these events but in a lesser light and goes more of a pseudo-religious/existential ramble at times with some uncomfortable extended animal and rape scenes tossed in-between the passages; so perhaps a warning to the gentle reader- it's not as it all seems. Still if you are ready to step up to a dark noir classic or sit down with one of the best movies I can recommend this year, hurry on over to Nightmare Alley and don't look down! *Title borrowed from my local library -EGP/April 2022 Comments are closed.
